Might be easier to just use a cross-over network cable, or even two regular network cables and a hub/switch?
Set both up with a local network IP in the same subnet, e.g.
10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2, and they should be able to see each other on the 'network'... Use file/folder sharing to move data across.

I have USB cable I used for such purpose... worked even between Xp <> W2K. Was cheap too... can't remeber the name right now, but there are many manufacturers that do these "USB network" thingies.
If anyone reading this thinks this might be a good alternative to using ethernet, it's actually not that great.
Built-in Windows stuff (as far as I recall) is limited to fairly simple file transfers and doesn't enable full TCP/IP over USB (which would be useful).
It has been a very long time since I did this though, so things may have improved in the interim... ?

If the amount of data isn't too enormous then the easiest way is to use one of those "flash drive" gadgets. That's how I do it. A 256MB one costs practically nothing these days.
The only catch is that you probably need at least Win98SE on both machines.

Macs can do all sorts of cool tricks involving connecting computers, such as rebooting a machine as a Firewire harddrive. Very useful for computer maintenance work.
For Windows I would just do what xlsior suggests and setup a quickie LAN between the two machines.

The USB pens are fabtastic devices - just remember to use the "Safely Remove Device" controller or else you may risk losing the pen and the data.
I use mine all the time - great for carrying showreels and demos around on too!
My entire showreel frits on a 256MB stick and plugs in and runs on practically any modern pc (win 98 with USB - onwards)!

Not that most people care, but USB memory sticks are also a great way of transferring data between PCs and Macs.
I recommend them to all of the students where I work, and frankly I keep pushing the faculty to require them in their classes. Having an easy-to-use, reliable 256MB of memory you carry around with you is just too convenient not to have. Burning CDs of your work every time you want to carry it around (which, for the students, is every day) is too much hassle.

The USB stick I have came with a business-card-shaped CD with drivers on it for Win 95 and possibly some other OSses.

I've even seen some 'universal' USB cables that snap on a regular Ethernet RJ45 jack on both sides, but at that point it really just becomes a cross-over network cable that happens to run over a wirepair that's part of a physical USB cable.
