If igLoader was licensed by a major industry player and used as the primary web-game delivery system would you.....

a) Feel a little happier about installing it?
b) Feel more inclined to purchase it?
c) Not really give a damn?
d) Expect me to raise my prices?
e) Expect me to give up game development and retire?
f) Make a post like this? :D

Please answer these honestly, you really will help with my marketing efforts.

a

a.

I normally hate installing plug-ins for only a couple little websites, but when something becomes majorly wide-spread like Macromedia Flash or Shockwave, then you miss out on alot by not having them on when you check out what people have to offer.

Even though I do already have igLoader installed just for testing compatibility with my system for your researching. ;P

I wouldn't install it unless I was sure it was securely running in a sandbox. I don't want something that allows a web page to place an exe on my machine with full control.

Some loser could then just create a page on his web site with a malicious program embedded in it that would load to my machine automatically.

I don't know if you do this but it would be at least nice to make the user confirm that they want to allow the program to run.

Well I would say c given my position. But I would feel most people would put A.

Also, if it were under a bigger company that has higher overhead, it might have to be more expensive inorder for it to turn a profit.

Not too sure though, ;)

Scott: remember that some "loser" can't just deliver ANY exe, they have to go through Indiepath and get licensed for that one exe only and he won't license it if it's bad of course.

I'm actually g) which is sorta like c) in that it's not relevant to me at the moment but I think it's important that you do well and that it will give people more confidence in the product and may open the doors to more big companies of course. Good luck.

@Scott, there is no way an unlicensed application can be delivered with igLoader. Period!

Ah, so it embeds something in the exe? That seems reasonable. So if I licensed it and sent you and exe you do something with it and send it back to me. Then I can only use that exe correct? I couldn't make a new version of the program and use it without sending it to you first.

In that case probably a and b for me.

Not really (a) becuase if I want to play something enough i'll install the plugin (i once spent £60 on a DVD drive to play a game i got bored with after a few days) so its probably (b)+a few years as I wouldn't need it yet.

a) No.
b) No.
c) Most likely.
d) Up to you.
e) When that happens I will be happy due to the lack of quality competition.
f) Maaaaaybe...

@Noel, lol - I love my Job too much sorry :D

@Scott, I give you the tools to pack you own .exe files using the license keys generated by our web-based license tool. You can re-make the .exe as many times as you wish. You can even transfer licenses between games using the tool. Be aware that I can remotely cancel your key thus rendering any existing or future installs completely useless.

I'd probably avoid whatever used it as I hate all the messing about we got with "systems" as it is.

I don't care for shockwave or any of the other additional nonsense like that. A new one from anyone is not going to make me any more interested in them, so as you can see it's clearly not personal, I just don't subscribe to fuss of any kind.

As it stands the damn browser keeps saying install this and install that, well, I won't be!

OK, so maybe I will miss this and will miss that, but will I care? I haven't yet and it's been a few years now.

It's plugin burn out I guess, it happened s few years back, I've seen enough already! ;O) We had lot's of "progress" but we're not really anywhere further forward than before. The point of bothering with it all is fully lost by now! Give it a year or five and see if I'm not right.

a) Not really. I already installed.
b) Nope. Don't need it.
c) Nah, I think it'd be great for you.
d) No.
e) No.
f) Yup.

Give it a year or five and see if I'm not right.
You know someones going to dig this thread up in five years, don't you? "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." - Thomas Watson Senior, Chairman of IBM, 1943.

Yeah and what did Bill Gates say about the Internet, something about "It aint gonna be big business."

Anyway I did the deal already :D

Well good luck to you, sincerely.

Bill seemed to be wrong but more probably was lying!

I know I'm the odd one out, but hey, we can't all be the same!

I hope you make a bundle!

Yeah maybe Bill was lying or just blissfully unaware.

I remember the first time I saw a game web plugin, I was totally un-impressed and did not see the value of it. How wrong was I!!!

My story is an odd one, if someone (they know who they are) had licenced me their plugin I would never have developed igLoader. Man are they @#!*ed now!

Or
option G). Because of new inflow of money, Release your other modules to the community for free and be showered with praise by all for not gouging other poor indie bMax developers.. :-)

iGloader being used by a major publisher would add peace of mind i think to most devs about its stability.

@GW, you are kidding right? I'm a reasonable guy, ask me nicely (offline).

Yeah maybe Bill was lying or just blissfully unaware

Gates' book, 'The Road Ahead' was revised for later re-prints to include more Internet-centered 'visions', when the internet really started to take off.

Early on, Microsoft didn't recognize the potential and importance of the internet, as many of their products and strategies of the early nineties clearly show. And even when it did start take off quickly, they were initially convinced that they could beat the Internet, with the 'Microsoft Network'. (MSN)
As we all know, now MSN is nothing more than an ISP with a website on the Internet, rather than 'the next big thing'.

It's plugin burn out I guess, it happened s few years back, I've seen enough already! ;O) We had lot's of "progress" but we're not really anywhere further forward than before. The point of bothering with it all is fully lost by now! Give it a year or five and see if I'm not right.

I agree, to an extent. Let's all consider for a moment the popularity of "Steam" and other web-based distribution and installation tools. This surely is the way software distribution is going. So.... I integrate igLoader with a steam front-end and .... and... and..

It may be the way some want it to, go, but I have choice to buy or not. If I don't like it (whatever it may be in question at the time) then I won't buy it.

So the question might be: is that really software distribution going forward? Maybe it is and maybe it's a marketing hill to find a way to climb.

There's a few delivery systems keeping my wallet closed right now. It's because I don't care for a sales situation where I pay good money then it's assumed I am a criminal as part of the deal.

And why? because it's policy. Well stuff policy and thank god it ain't law!

I got no gripe with anyone developing it, but I just don't fancy using it as a user. I think it's great you got someone to buy it though! ;O) I just hope you made them hurt enough! ;O) It's easy for you to see that I'd really like them to hurt in the wallet for wanting to treat a paying customer like that! ;O) (and they probably will because that's how suits are!)

Enjoy the dough, it A way of keeping score I guess. ;O)

So Fish, whats with the wee stuff?

a) Possibly, although it greatly depends on who the 'major industry player' is. I mean, if it is a place like weatherbug, bonzibuddy, gator/gain, or Real Networks(RealPlayer), you it would be an incentive *not* to install it.

I trust your intentions are good, but of course any software delivery system can be abused by an untrustworthy licensee.

b) Quite possibly, since a large industry player using it as well means that there will a larger number of end users that will already have the required plugin installed on their system, making it easier on others that need the same plugin as well.

c) N/A

d) Expect: Possibly... I mean, you are trying to make a living and all that... But personally I hope you're going for the low profit margin/high volume market. ;-)

e) So... How good of 'hypothetical' deal are you talking about here? If this is a serious question to you, then I can only say one thing: congratulations!

f) Apparently so. :-)

a) Feel a little happier about installing it?
I'm afraid not, not the security consideration, such thing looks unnecessary to me. rather to download a demo as zip to my pc and try it.

b) Feel more inclined to purchase it?
Not tend to purchase it, such thing make a wonderful game feels like a normal flash game, and similar products are flying around.

c) Not really give a damn?

d) Expect me to raise my prices?
It's up to you, I tend to dristibute my works in downloadable form.

e) Expect me to give up game development and retire?
If you get more profit from this plugin, it's a good idea not touching game development and keep maintainance this plugin.

f) Make a post like this? :D
Maybe, or not?

Just a few cents and forgive me being a bit critical, igLoader is not a "game" but a application, as there'll be more product like this and broadband age doesn't mean everything need to be executed "online".

It relates to the video game industry

I trust your intentions are good, but of course any software delivery system can be abused by an untrustworthy licensee.

The is why we have the right not to sell you the software and if you do decide to break the terms of the license agreement we will remove your license which means further downloads and previously installed applications will fail to work.

igLoader is actually much bigger than all that. It's not all about web-based games and embedding stuff in the browser. The biggest application I've been discussing is software delivery across a University Campus. It's a fantastic way of ensuring client machines have software available when it's required, and the latest version of that software. How many man hours do you think it would take to install a software package across 2000 machines? With igLoader they just get the user to go to a URL on the intranet and it's all done! And yes you can do this with traditional software depolyment tools but they are way too expensive for organisations such as this.

I just hope you don't get mega rich before you release my next game!!! Cos I want you to be focused and helpful ;-)
