is it possible to kill msn for someone??

Check this out, it's totaly wierd. A friend asked me to log off msn then log on again. I do that, then he asks me to do it again but this time he tells me that I will not be able to log in for 1 minute.

Ofcourse I laugh and tell him no problem, I'll show you. I log off and try to log on but I get message from msn telling me that either my user name doesn't exists or password is wrong.

I use automatic login so I don't have to type password, I just log in. So one minute goes and then I'm able to login. I ask my friend how did he "turn off" my msn account but he doesn't tell me much except that he can do it with anyones account.

First of all I'd like to point that he does not have access to my login info nor am I newby to have a trojan on my computer so someone can pick up my pass and somehow turn off my msn for minute or as long as they want. So anyone heard about this or has any idea how he would be able to do this?

He promissed to tell me more about this techique but not yet. Apparently he is using some sort of program to do what ever he is doing. Anyone knows how this is possible??? And how can msn suck this much for this to be possible? Can't microsoft get anything right?

Maybe he found a command in the MSN protocol that allows users to be blocked from logging in?

Or he simply has a simple program that hammers your account with failed login attempts and this locks it for one minute?

Perhaps he tried to brute force your password and MSN's server froze your account temporarily to prevent it. Sounds like a reasonable hypothesis to me: if MSN didn't do this, it would be possible to simply hammer away a brute force attack until it succeeded (assuming that he couldn't be ignored because he was using an unlimited supply of proxy IPs.)

Maybe you should be lauding Microsoft instead of lambasting them?

I would think there would be a myriad of ways to do that.

I read it as "Kill someone over MSN". Which would be useful functionality, and would put an end to IM spam real quick!

I wish people were as gullible as they used to be when backorifice came out... I had mass amounts of fun with that back in the day at the office... :)

interesting how some of you read the name of thread, anyones as you suggested he probly has program that hammers msn with wrong password instead of doing it manually by hand every minute he wants someone offline.

I was so pleased when SP2 removed MSN loading up as default.

Sure they can -- the Microsoft Wheelmouse Optical is great. Too bad the rest of their product lines are mediocre at best.

well I talked to another friend who suggested that he must be doing something like trying to log in to my account with wrong password. you could do it manually but you'd had to do it every minute to keep someone off, seems he found a program to do it for him automatically. I told him that I figured it out and he said that I had figured correct.
