You really really REALLY should be running an up-to-date anti-virus scanner (there are free ones like AVG or Avast as well)
there have been a number of recent windows exploits that allowed data execution under windows without acutally opening any attachments -- simply getting served an infected popup image file could have resulted in malicious software being launced on your PC.
"being careful opening attachments" is always good advice, but NOT sufficient to protect your PC from getting infected with a virus. There are countless other attack vectors, many of which would go unnoticed without a good anti virus program.
