They do work to some extent, but the overall experience does feel fake, and it can give you a headache as the shutters open and close, occilating between eyes.

..depending on model you choose...I purchase TruDimension lib for shutter glasses and glasses itself, and its pretty good..
Any of these could cause an individual person problems. The problem is not just with the glasses per se (although a cheap pair may have noticeable shutters which would be a problem), the problem is that your eyes are going to try and focus like they would normally - but cannot - and that is something some people can handle and others can't.
The closest example I can think of is FPS games, some people get seasick playing them while others do not.

Yes I agree with dynaman here - also people who wear specs cant easily use these glasses.
I wear specs, I have a set of them, I have had some success and some failures - MOH hates these glasses for example - the graphics dont draw at all well - and they flicker too.
Developing your own stuff is trial and error - I think you need the nVidia drivers which are designed to work with them too.
My issues maybe driver issues but as there is only one driver for nVidia cards, it could be a general problem. I have had a ti-500 and a GeForce 6600. Currently the 6600 will not work with the drivers - I don't know why.
The drivers expect monitors to refresh at between 85 and 120 fps for optimum results - my monitor does 75 fps at the resolution I wanted to use them so I guess that could be the problem.
The red and cyan glasses are little better - they tend to mush the colours up, but the instant novelty effect, and lack of flicker makes them an easier testing ground.
If you can borrow a pair I would do that - don't buy them unless you have money to waste on them - also if they are for games playing - you will get headaches and eyestrain using these over an extended games playing period.

I Agree with Ipete2.
personally i have a pair.
They dont work at all well with my LCD monitor even in LCD mode- because the monitor has a slow response.
On my CRT they work okay but its almost impossible to get them to work in the first place because it doubles the monitor refresh rate. There arent that many monitors that support 120hz :P
