PencilWhipped...

no, i'm not calling ENAY names... that's what the game is called... and ya really gotta see this...
i'll tell you more after you've taken a look at it... and you will be surprised at what's it was made with...
http://webpages.charter.net/lflicking/click here

on the page, then click cancel to download this lil gem.

What I hate the most is when I visit a website like the one linked by red, a popup comes on the screen then a whole host of other webpages are automatically opened containing a bunch of crap.
To me personally, if the website designer used a free version of coolpage bollox to make the site then he would realize that when people clicked the link to download his app that it would in turn open up a whole host of other useless bullcrap.
Just because of how this guys website is and what happened just now while clicking the download link I'm going to boycot his website. He/She can also shove their game, news etc up where the sun don't shine.
... sorry A,
i didn't get any pop ups... just an option to download the free site dev tools, which i told you above to cancel...
i surely wouldn't have posted a link to anything like that...
--Mike
There's no need to apologise Red. You didn't make the website.
Plus I have the flu and I'm grumpy. :/
I downloaded it, installed it. Looked for it in my start menu, found its folder but just uninstall inside. So guess what, I clicked it!
I got a desktop icon...
it was installed... it just didn't put a link in the start menu... you might've looked in the folder where it was installed before you uninstalled it...
... it's really worth taking a look at.
--Mike
I remember that game....it was a few years ago made using the old Pie in the Sky 3D thingy (which no longer exists). It won some contest too i belive...
ehhhhhhhhhh (buzzzer going off sound)
not this one... i don't think this one was done with PITSky3D...
i'll reveal it later...
if you know already, don't spill it just yet :)
--Mike
I know - I know !!! - you revealed it yourself in another thread ! :)
Saw this about 5 years ago.
Edit: Oh, and I really hate it.
eeeeehhhhhhhhhhhh (buzzer going off sound again)
not this one Noel... you didn't see this one 5 years ago... the one you probably saw was made with a different tool, and i don't think it compares to this version...
--Mike
Looks like the same thing to me.
could be...
but me no think so...
--Mike
I saw this when it was in IGF (a fact that they still have prominently displayed on their website.) I really hope it's progressed since then, because a) that was years ago, and b) it sucked.
it has... you'll enjoy it... so will Noel...
trust me...
--Mike
Um, you were just kidding around, right? You don't seriously think that's any good? Amazingly, yet as I expected, it has not changed one bit since I last saw it.
i saw this in a digpen advertisement in a nintendo power magazine a few years ago. believe it or not, if i never saw that screenshot, i would've never wanted to make video games.
I love the game. I've registered on the Dark Basic forum (the sequel is developed using FPS Creator) to give Lonnie some support!
I think his style is great! I'm all excited for the sequel!
And yes, the otiginal is made with PieSky3D. Hard to believe, eh? Must be labor of love! It won the IGC a couple of years back...
Amon, no popups for me either. Rather than blaming their website, I'd blame your adware =]
This is REALY OLD! This was in Wired in like 2001. Cool game though I think it was one of the things that made me want to get True-Vol into the IGF back then.
the one they did in 2001 was made with GameMaker or something similar...
this latest one is made with FPSC from The Game Creators... the same guys that bought you DarkBASIC...
... surprise!!! :)
--Mike
It won the IGC a couple of years back...
No it didn't. It was a finalist, which didn't exactly mean a whole lot back then; IGF was really small.
jhocking pretty much summed it up.
This thing was crap and is still crap.
For the uninformed, it was made with Pie in the Sky Soft.'s GCS (Game Creation System), so what work the guy actually did is minimal, and even then the game is ugly, not fun, and dull.
I said it years ago and I'm saying it again now: this game sucks.
You were what ... 11 when this game was actually developed? Learn to respect your elders ;P
I think for it's time it was a cool and different idea. I didn't think it was a great game ... but then again everything that single people were producing back then pretty much blew chunks. I don't think people in this community remember the crap that everyone was making. Nothing was better than Pencil Whipped except maybe Platypus and I think that was actually made afterward ... not really certain. For it's time it was artistic and different. It doesn't deserve any disrespect but time has certainly marched on for what single individuals can accomplish.
hahahahahahaaaaa...
weeeeeeee....
--Mike
You were what ... 11 when this game was actually developed? Learn to respect your elders ;P
Respect and admiration are different, Jeremy. Remember that. Edit: And I was 13. You'd be able to figure this out more easily if the moderators hadn't deleted my birthday thread (turned 17 yesterday).
... but you gotta admit, his statement did sorta put things into a perspective... of sorts
... youngern :)
--Mike
Nope, not really.
hahahahaaaa... yes, really...
--Mike
I think you're just insane O_o
I love the style. The game follows the "wrong" gameplay type where things just pop up and after you die you load and avoid the trap, but it fits the style perfectly. Who did jump five feet high when the screaming face pops up? Or who didn't try to shoot the little white dude who pops up and says "Hello"? And I absolutely loved the mice!
And let's not forget that GCS was a bunch of crap since it's DOS days (I love "Lethal Tender" though! Great game!), so it DID take something to make a game like that in it.
Do you remember your legs flying off when you hit the thing that cuts you in half?
I'm really looking forward for a sequel and I just don't want to wait for so long! It's a torture! 8-0
People who enjoyed Pencil Whipped might want to take a look at thing ZDooM WAD in development:
http://www.foreverhood.com
I think you're just insane O_o
well... a few people around here think the same about you...
perspective Noel... just like Jeremy said... but from a different angle this time...
Anatoly... yeah, it is kinda different... in a good wierd sorta way... i had fun looking at it...
--Mike
Respect and admiration are different, Jeremy
Agreed, but calling something crap is disrespect where I come from. Admiration would be praising it. Respect would be acknowledging its contribution though perhaps without saying it's great.
As a side not Pencil Whipped is still an inspiration to me. I would very much like to be featured in Wired as it was.
Isn't crappy graphics what you people claim to want every time Doom 3 comes up in discussion?
Ahh yes. I rember this game. But If I remeber well it's not created with any game creation system. Cause I remember the creator saying that he used an open 3d Engine in c++ and he made an intersting story back then with all the problems that came up to him from time to time.
Also I have to say that the graphics are cool. Reminds the technic that was used for the original doom ,wolfenstain 3D and catacombs 3D.
A perfect idea to get rid of the 3D character creation.
No not at all ... it was made using a point and click system. Then again that's just what I remember from Wired ... the creator himself didn't tell me that ;)
But If I remeber well it's not created with any game creation system
Just download the game and run it! The game is made using Pie in the Sky 3D Game Creation System and you can clearly see that by the all the files in the directory.
Isn't crappy graphics what you people claim to want every time Doom 3 comes up in discussion?
There's a difference between wanting bad graphics and accepting them, which is just aswell, because I saw your screenshots in the water thread.
I havn't played this because i'm at work and on a Mac, but when I first saw it the artistic style caught my eye. It was in the "other" thread atm where lots of black and white games where shown, and I must admit the idea of doing a game in shades of grey - or in some strange pencil drawn billboard system - does very much appeal to me.
a popup comes on the screen then a whole host of other webpages are automatically opened containing a bunch of crap
Remove the p2p software on your computer and stop pirating software, then you wont get infected by the malware you are no complaining of. I got no such popups and i'm not even using a pop up blocker atm...
stop pirating software
Sound advice.
The sketchy pencil drawings gave it character, something which alot of games lack, even today.
I haven't downloaded the game, but I did think it looked pretty cool via the screen shots. The Stencil Idea is pretty cool, and I'd like to see it done more.
PS: I didn't see any popups either.
I always liked Lon and have no problems with him. This is a comment on the game only.
The original version was done with the "Windows" version of Pie's Game Creation System (a point and click game maker). Windows is in quotes because the Windows version was still 80% DOS based. Although I liked what Lonnie did back then and was happy for the praise he got (it was even shown in an art museum), I never found the game "original". It was and remains a clone of the original Bad Toys which was hand drawn black and white, and even the characters in Pencil Whipped are very similar to what was in the original Bad Toys.
The Best Pie Windows game ever made remains
House of Cathalon. It was the only game that looked "professional", had good graphics, good level design and had a good story.
With the bugs in Pie's GCS, it was amazing anybody was able to make a complete game that worked. What games were made sucked. Here is a review of one of the better
GCS made games. This game also made the
list of worst games ever made.
However, the new version of Pencil Whipped is being made in FPS Creator, another point and click game maker. So, I don't really see why it is being posted here on a programming forum. Perhaps, like the new version of Bad Toys, the new version of Pencil Whipped will move to hand drawn color? Regardless, nothing original about Pencil Whipped. It is and remains a Bad Toys clone and being made with a point and click game creator, it doesn't belong on a programming forum.
Ya, theres something definitelly wrong with Red. No i dont mean the smell, i mean ... you know up there. Sounds like a psychotic :D
Should lay off that coffee ;)
BTW, Max Payne copied this game when you had a level similar to this (or rather EXACTLY like this game) but it was all in 3d and stuff.
Don't get me wrong guys, I think this is a really interesting idea. In case it isn't obvious from my website or the Flamewar! screenshot I posted, I am really big on pursuing artistic innovation in games. I just think the implementation sucked.
ie. good idea, poor follow-through
BTW, Max Payne copied this game when you had a level similar to this (or rather EXACTLY like this game) but it was all in 3d and stuff
You mean the fun house sections in the second one?
I don't think Max Payne II gets it's idea from this game. Though it shure is a cool level.
While Pencil Whipped tries to emerge you in the drawing (you feel like you are in one), the level in Max Payne serves as something distant. "Adress Unknown" that plays in Max's head. You feel like you are in the fun house which is based in Max's past while being in reality. And PW is totally surreal.
Lenn... that smell you're talking is your own... if your head wasn't so far up your... ahhh, you know what i'm talking about... try to keep on topic... and leave the old men alone...
... before you get humiliated again :P
as for the game... parts of it definitely does remind me of the original DOOM... someone alluded to that above, i think... and the hand drawn mono colored graphics are definitely part of its unusual appeal...
and i must take some smal exception to the comments about since it was done in a point and click dev environment, it is not good enough to be mentioned in a programming forum... that sounds just like what Blitz3D made games get from the c++ elitists...
talk about the pot calling the kettle black... saying something like that is not only, in my opinion, totally unfair... but belies any knowledge at all about FPSC...
there is some programming (scripting) involved... it's not just point and click...
... besides, and i'm sure this has been said before, but do you really think that the audience out there at the local WalMart, or browsing the local internet store site on their computers are really gonna stop to consider wheter the game was made in c++, Blitz3D, or FPSC...
... if it's cheap enough, looks good enough, plays good enough, and has that inescapable something about it that the person seeing it is looking for... then i really don't think that what dev tool was used to put it together will stop anyone from whipping out that ole credit card and taking it to the register, or clicking the purchase button.
--Mike
i must take some smal exception to the comments about since it was done in a point and click dev environment, it is not good enough to be mentioned in a programming forum
Who said that?
hahahahahaaa... :)
--Mike
Um, you didn't answer the question. I think Noel may be onto something...
I think you're just insane
was i supposed to answer that...
you got a problem reading... or are your eyes going bad or something...
if you can, look up at Brice's post...
... if they are, here's what he said
However, the new version of Pencil Whipped is being made in FPS Creator, another point and click game maker. So, I don't really see why it is being posted here on a programming forum.
ok... don't ask me to do your reading again... and if you are gonna start following Noel's lead, i may have to draft you into the guild...
like the guy in Star Wars said... who's the bigger fool... the fool, or the fool that follows the fool...
--Mike
wtf dude. I ask a simple question and get reamed for it. Sometimes I read every single post, but sometimes (such as in this thread) I just skim, skipping over all the wordy posts.
there is some programming (scripting) involved... it's not just point and click...
Like 3D RAD, 3D Game Studio, Game Maker, Multimedia Fusion, and Pie GCS FPSC is a point and click game maker. It does allow "scripting" for more advanced users. I am a FPSC & DBPRO owner and am very familiar with the product in question. However, a programming forum is not the place to discuss point and click game makers, especially when the game maker is a competing product to Blitz. FPSC does have its own forums.
... besides, and i'm sure this has been said before, but do you really think that the audience out there at the local WalMart,
Arguments like this are silly since there are not any FPSC made games being sold at Walmart. If you look at the publishers for the games carried in the $9.99 bin at WalMart (see my old article on publishing and marketing for a listing) you will find those publishers have very strict requirements and would not touch a game made with a point and click game creator like FPSC. If you are lucky, they might accept a game made in an indie language, but here in the US the only place I have seen B3D made games being sold at retail locations is at the Dollar store by rather questionable publishers where 9 times out of 10, the author has not been paid and the publisher is defunct.
a programming forum is not the place to discuss point and click game makers, especially when the game maker is a competing product to Blitz.
This forum isn't just about programming, it's about game development. And one of my favorite things about this forum is its tolerance for discussions about competing products.

You obviously haven't been introduced to Shagwannabe. Tolerance for such topics no longer exists.
Personally, if I want to read about DB stuff, I will go to DB forums, not here. Here, when I have time to read the forums, I want to read about Blitz.
I am a FPSC & DBPRO owner and am very familiar with the product in question
i dunno how familiar you actually are Brice... and i mean no dis here... but you do realize that FPSC elements can be coded in DarkBASIC Pro... don't you... and the scripting isn't for advanced users...
and whether or not you wanna accept it or not... scripting is programming...
to say it's not... well, that's just like some of the elitist crap i hear over on the some c++ boards when someone brings up Blitz3D...
you're also wrong about 3DRAD... it's a not scripted, and it's not a click together game develoment system either... unless you wanna consider all the interpreted BASIC languages that are out there scripted languages...
and... Torque is scripted... ya think that's not real programming... lets see ya do something with that...
as far as my comment about the audience being silly... you read what i said, then choose to address something entirely different... i said
the audience... the prospective customer... while you are talking about a publisher...
... hardly the same thing.
if the game were boxed and on the shelf, the WalMart shopper wouldn't be the least bit interested in how it was made... same thing applies to the IndieMart.com shopper buying a game in a virtual box... and those can get published by almost anyone nowadays...
plus... if you think that an idie game can't fly into a publisher's lap and wind up on the shelves... look up the sales stats on [b]
Bass Fishing/[b]... done in 3DGS... and indie dev tool...
--Mike
you're also wrong about 3DRAD... it's not a click together game develoment system either...
I am not wrong, like all the other products listed it is a point and click game maker. You can make an entire game without having to type any code and just using the existing "brains" that came with the program or that could be downloaded via the official site. If you chose to use the scripting, you could and you could do a lot with the built in language, but it was not necessary for making a game.
unless you wanna consider all the interpreted BASIC languages that are out there scripted languages...
I never said no such thing, clean your glasses dude ;c)
it is a point and click game maker. You can make an entire game without having to type any code and just using the existing "brains" that came with the program
hahahaha... do you ever stop and read what you're writing...
just using the existing "brains" that came with the program
that part... somebody had to write the brains...
that's programming dear friend...
that code is not an integral part of the engine...
what you are saying is analguos to saying that using a dll in VB qualifies VB as a click together system,
therefore you are not a programmer...
I never said no such thing, clean your glasses dude ;c)
i didn't say you said such a thing... did i... you'd better clean your glasses out...
i merely posed a rhetorical absurdity that you seemed to be gullible enough to buy into...
you are wrong... accept it...
and be happy...
--Mike
Mike: Pointing and clicking to include a brain or other form of script compiled by somebody else is not programming. It is pointing and clicking.
ok... then you win...
i conceed to your obviously superior deductive logic...
Mr. Spock... do you... have a minute...
yes Captain, what is it...
this crewman... 2nd Lt Brice... he's...
ahhh, say no more Captain... i'm aware of Lt Brice's fantasies... he has a habit of presenting the absurd and extreme as aruement for his... lets say, unique view of the universe... not wanting to become infected by whatever has a grip on him, i feel that the anti matter reactor cells need recalibrating... and after that i must wash my ears...
(shwoooooosh)
Spock... Spock... get back up here...
i'll get you... for that... Spock!!!
--Mike
See, posts like that are the reason I'm making Flamewar! Was that really necessary? Couldn't you have just, y'know, ignored him?
i could've ignored him... you're absolutely right...
but some unsuspecting person might come along and read this thread, and get a completely distorted and incorrect idea about game development on this level...
now i really don't mean to flame anyone... but come on now... his examples are like bending over backwards to try and validate the absurd...
of course you can pop a pre developed resource into 3DRAD and run it and have that element move around and shoot stuff... and not write a single line of code...
... but would that be any sort of real game?
only in the most meanial stretch of the term...
FPSC allows a more enhanced ability to drop pre developed instances of resources into a level and run it... that's the appeal to some people...
... but anyone writing a real game will find that they must at some point start to do some coding of their own.
you can drag and drop a VB control into a VB project and compile it to an app... but does that make VB a click and play development environment... hardly... very few VB apps don't have some code written in em...
did the guy who developed PencilWhipped in FPSC just drag and drop a pre rendered resource into the engine, wrap it up, and call it a game... hardly...
what he fails to realize is that the development environment is secondary to the developer... many people who use Blitz would love to be able to have a level editor where you could drag and drop elements into it, compile it, and call it a game...
... would that make Blitz a click and play development environment... would that make it any less of a programming tool...
... hardly.
his arguement is weak at best... and absurd at face value...
sorry... i don't mean to be so gruff about it... but he told me to clean my glasses...
... i'm not wearing any today :)
if i were flaming him... i would've responded by telling him to wash the rose coloring off of his glasses...
but i'm a nice guy... and in the spirit of community, i never flame anybody...
(heeeheeeeheeeheeee)
--Mike
Here's the early work in progress video:
... whoops... nevermid... you have to be logged in on DB forums to view it.
Shame... it's pretty cool.
many people who use Blitz would love to be able to have a level editor where you could drag and drop elements into it, compile it, and call it a game...
Actually, there have been several 2D point and click game creators made in Blitz and at least one 3D point and click game creator made in Blitz.
Programs like FPSC and other game creators do serve a purpose. They get people hooked and when they "want more" they start looking at various game oriented programming languages. The game creators serve as a stepping stone. FPSC really capitalizes on this by providing the DB Pro source for FPSC so you can expand it however you want.
