Win Vista and BMax

I was wondering if anyone here is programming apps for Windows Vista. WIll BMax work in Vista?

From what I've heard, the compiler doesn't work in current betas of Vista. I don't know whether already compiled programs will run.

Vista is likely to the worst version of Windows yet and we're proably gonna have to wave goodbye to our old games (including the ones we've written even maybe)

Personaly, I'm looking forward to Vista, and expect it to make a big difference with the next generation of PC games.

As for old games, I'll be surprised if it really makes much difference, after the first 6 months most games worth playing will most likely work.

I believe Cygnus tried the beta version about 6 months ago, and Bmax compiled and ran just fine.

Some reviewers of beta versions are claiming that it actualy runs faster than XP on many modern machines purchased within the last couple of years.

Yah, I was quite convinced after the CVS demonstration. Hopefully they fixed the bug that I keep whining about because I have a nasty habit of putting empty exe files in places. (Yes, I did it again today! Am I honestly the only one?!)

Can't wait to get my copy of Vista...

Anywho, I'd speculate that it should run fine. I can't find any reason why it Wouldn't.

My Uncle who works for Microsoft and has a MSDN Subscription gave me His copy of the Beta 1 to play with and BlitzMax worked fine, authough it looked similar to the Linux version compared to the Windows one...

Looking forward to Vista here also. If apps (like B3D) break then I suspect either Vista will get fixed, or the app will (if it's doing something non-standard).

If B3D never works, then meh, I'll move on to C/C++ all that much sooner :)

Max was no problem (after I remembered how to install it :P)

Personally I saw a slowdown- but that was with unoptimised drivers, Most people seem to have seen a speed increase with current B3D and Bmax apps.

Most things should see a speed increase with Vista. Microsoft have been making a special effort to ensure that games are given every resource possible. Vista is designed to get completely out of the way, shutting down services and freeing as much RAM and CPU time as possible.

Of course, we're going to be looking at having nearer to 2G of RAM in our machines to make best use, but that seems a fairly cheap cost of progress (1G of RAM being less than £60 these days).

I'm looking forward to Vista as well. If not for DX10, then for the supposed increased security! And the new UIs :)

This may be the best feature of Vista, but I have NO doubt that MS will manage to screw it up and leave a LOT of stuff running in the background because it might be needed by .01% of gameplayers.

You should give Microsoft more credit. ;)

They've learned a lot from their past mistakes and have made a lot of efforts to make up for them. Vista covers a lot of these efforts, and should definitely do a lot in the way of increasing overall productivity and user-friendliness. If not, hey, you can always wait to try it on a friend's PC first and see if you like it. That's what I've done for pretty much everything but Linux and the Mac I had (I just got a @#!*atoo, spending a few weeks getting to know it at the pet shop before actually taking it home though [primarily since he's still not fully weaned, but also because right now it's near impossible with the weather, so I'm letting him stay with more experienced folks while he gets used to me so he's better at entertaining himself and dealing with strangers.. OK, I'll shut up] -- and that's the information session about my day).

If I remeber right, the reason MS created windows was to have all the needed drivers stored in the background.
The real reason was to hit the user inderface of Mac.

I remeber Win95 I was filling so stupid when my computer was runing them. I used for real windows first time in 2000 and I used Win98. Resently changed to WinXP and Win98.
I will change to Vista only when Carmack produce new engine or when I will do the mistake to buy something only Vista compartible.
Windows after the fall of the empire will be remembered as "The most crap product ever."

I want the Amiga back. Seriously. MS-DOS was horrible. I can't imagine why anyone would want all that back. Sure Windows has it's flaws but it's a huge improvement over DOS. Sure it's not nearly as good as it could have been, had it had a decade of other products to compete against, but considering Microsofts market position, we should be glad they're at least still pretending they want to make their product better.

I'll probably get Vista straight away, but if I was smart I'd wait for SP1 - that seems to be about when most of MS's new OS's really start to shine.

So I'm to assume that when you quit a game you get to sit around for a brief moment while everything Vista-related loads back up?

If MS are smart, probably a sort of cache block, seperate pagefile or sleep-state file will be used for such events, in which case the brief moment will be very brief indeed.

When's the estimated release date?

I read somewhere that vista will have a feature that will allow it to reboot out of hibernation using flash memory (PC Format I think)... It caches all of its data there and is pretty instant... Maybe it will use the same process when exiting games!

Personlly, I'm looking forward to it, and since I'm well into programming in C++, the transition may not be that terrible... Though, it will probably mean that buying a 'DirectX 10 programming guide' book, and I'm still ploughing through 8.1! :)

It's not 'unloaded', the task scheduler just doesn't schedule tasks that aren't nessecary. Which metrics it uses to determines which tasks are nessecary however is going to be interesting to discover.
