Win98 - Making a backup image

Hi coders,

I've tried various software to achieve the following but I can't really recall having a 100% sucessful result.

What I want to do is burn an image of a current Win98 installation onto a CD. This CD needs to be bootable and consequently able to restore the image back to the HD. Any recommendations of (free) solftware?

The software should be capable of capturing all registry settings, drivers, etc ..

I use Norton Ghost and back my 98 machine up across the network. I take a complete disk image, meaning every damn thing.

Not free though.

I recommend it too, there are other freeware stuff around I think.

Does Norton Ghost copy the o/s to a CDR (making it a self-contained bootable/restore disc)?

It copies everything but you will need the Norton Boot CD to copy everything back.

Once you've got your ultimate setup, just zip up your entire harddrive into one big fat zip, then extract it again in dos mode from the CD after formatting your harddrive. Works for me :)

Except in DOS mode you don't have long file name support, meaning that parts of windows will be broken since many references (e.g. to "program files" won't match up...
Unless you unzip the stuff onto the drive from within another windows installation, but then there's still the matter of making the drive bootable to the OS in the first place.

DOS mode might not have long filename support but pkzip does have!

Is the Norton Boot CD supplied with the purchase?

within Norton Ghost, you have the ability to make a bootdisk... I know you can make floppies, I assume CD as well.

Ghost can also make self booting image disks.

I am using Paragon True Image that was on some cover disks, not sure if you can download it for free. It still requires to make a floppy disk with the image installer, tho this floppy disk and its image tool is very useful anyway, not only for installing images from CDs, but also to add/remove/edit/unhide partitions etc.
