Star Wars: Empire at War Demo is out

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Star Wars: Empire at War Demo is out

Well, as a Star Wars fan I had to share this! :)))))))))))))))))))))))
The download is about 780 MB heavy.

You can grab it here:

Let's hope the game is better than Battlefront 2!

Btw: Did someone ever made a Star Wars game in Blitz?

Boo. Frickin.' Yah.

STAR WARS FOREVER!!!

heh, been looking for a torrent all morning without any luck.

Does anybody remember the time you could fit 3 game demos on a single floppydisc?

Sigh. I'm just gonna cave in and buy it as soon as it shows up on play.com - anyone know what protection it uses?

Evak, 3dgamers has a torrent now but GamersHell seems to be faster.

I have it and made the tutorial mission hang in a loop. :)

If you have to send a raid fleet to a certain planet and attack it instead, the game hangs... :/

Sure, you love Star wars and buying pap games is one thing, but do you really want to buy a pap game because it's got Star Wars written on it?

> Does anybody remember the time you could fit
> 3 game demos on a single floppydisc?

Yep, I even remember when 3 full games were written on 1 floppydisc on the Amiga :)

@Enay
I have made this mistake with battlefront 2 and won't do it again in the future!

@Rest
I remember games shipping on one 5"25 disk for the C64.

Like the famous Turrican! :)

But let's stay on topic... :))))))))))))))))))

I joyed the star wars Jedi Knight series and Kotor and the 3D spaceship ones on Nintendo and PS2, all great games and of course the mighty Xwing and Tie Figher. But all the rest are pap, hehe, e.g. Phantom Menace, yak!

Turrican rocked on C64 and Amiga, finished it on both! And Turrican 2.

Respect... Turrican 2 was HARD!

I was a teenager then with teenage reflexes. Actually I think I finished Turrican 2 on the C64 drunk on cider and the first time I played it too (cos I played all the others and knew the format). Remeber that high speed side scrolling bit, that was hard.

Turrican 2 was easy compared to Turrican 1.

splutter!

Interesting 3 page preview on IGN:

http://pc.ign.com/articles/681/681718p1.html

Finished the demo.
The campain map is far too limited for my taste. :(

I love the homeworld II like space battles.
I hate the dumb unit A.I. in ground battles.

Probably will wait till I have read some full reviews.

I've pre-ordered it on the strength of IGN's preview, they normally get it right. Plus I thought C & C Generals was excellent, and some of the same team have worked on this.

Unfortunately, I have a 2GB monthly bandwidth limit, and am not prepared to use 700MB+ of it on a demo. If it is rubbish I can always sell it quickly on eBay, or if I read a bad review before release date then I can simply cancel my pre-order.

I don't think its that rubbish.
It's simply C&C + Homeworld + Imperium Galactica in StarWars universe.

Hope you have a fast Pc as you'll need it!

3.2Ghz Pentium 4, 2GB DDR 400 RAM, ATI 800XL 256MB PCI Express card, 200GB HD... etc. So I should be ok. :)

@Avon

Oh that old thing lol - yes I think that pc just might be ok - But Im really worried about the game, th e Battlefronts II demo I got 2 days ago on XBOX was absolutely dire with a capital D.

You would have thought that Lucas would be employing rather better teams of people to do his bidding, as it is it looks aweful, it plays aweful and by golly it is a sorry state of affairs when one of the top franchises in the World comes out like that.

I hope this new one is better...

IPete2.

Avon. Pawn your PC and come to the southwest meal? Maybe you could do one in Southhampton sometime?

most MP FPS games are pretty sucky lol. I really like the original XWing and tie fighter series on PC and the first Pod racer and KOTOR 1 & 2 best.

I got to play the demo lastnight, and couldn't really tell if I liked it from the demo. Seems like they mixed several games together without pushing any of the seperate parts far enough.

If ENAY were here he'd say:

Starfish

boom boom

I gotta get some work done, stop posting you lot!

FPS? It's a RTS game... unless I've BADLY mis-understood the preview! :)

@Avon: Don't worry its an rts!

Yes the GOOD OLD TIMES. The Xwing and Tie-Fighter games rocked. Kotor 1 + 2 are good as well.

BATTLEFRONT 1+2 ARE AMONG THE WORST GAMES I HAVE SEEN!
At least for the pc!

I bought a joystick to play XWing and it was so damn accurate then I was horrified by XWing Vs TieFighter for Windows (saw at a friends) as it was all inaccurate and slow. I actually completed XWing and Tie Fighter (inc. Mission Pack) which is no mean feat I'll tell you!

I'm just gonna cave in and buy it as soon as it shows up on play.com
That's where I've pre-ordered mine FlameDuck. £24.99 including delivery.

Btw, some hint for me to win the demo campain.

At start:
Sell ALL your ground units and buildings.
Buy ALL mines for your planet.
Send Han to steal credits
Build an ALL space fleet (y-wing + corvettes) up to the unit cap.
Take Han with you when you start the battle.
=> The Falcon has a temp invulnerability which is nice. :o)

After you won the space battle:
Sell all your ships (keep 1 y-wing squadron for bombing runs) and sell 2 mines!
Buy light and heavy factories.
Build an army of tanks and artillery up to the unit cap.

Start the ground attack:
Use your bombers and artillery to destroy the turrets and units near the enemy shield. Crush them all.

I was refering to Battlefront being a terrible FPS earlier :)

Oh no you weren't! Your exact words were "Empire at War is a FPS - fact" ;)

hehe, ok so I misunderstood.

Ahm guys I just found out that there will be a limited special edition with a bonus deathstar dvd (more campains, wallpapers, videos and 2 screensavers).

The price seems as high as for the normal version.
So I'm tempted to grab this... *tries to withstand the dark side*

This game is very sweet! I really like the amount of detail and the cinematic camera ... the battles look really nice with it ... almost as good as watching a movie ;P It does blunder every now and then but that only makes it sweeter when it gets a good shot of something.

Doh! Not interested in the screensavers, videos etc. - but more campaigns sounds good. Hmm. *goes off to hunt for the special edition version*

[EDIT] Ok, I've found it in the US, but not from any UK sellers. It doesn't say bonus "campaigns", but bonus "maps", which in my experience is something different. More likely to just be new maps for doing skirmish or multiplayer mode. So I'll stick to the normal edition. :)

This edition is only available for people from Us and Germany.

Maybe only we are dumb enough to buy it.
But at least in Germany its for the normal price! :)))

No monitor?

Nope... I am so skillful I can play games by audio alone! Took a while to complete Half Life 2, I can tell you. ;)

I saw some program about a blind person playing computer games and actually finishing them, no kidding.

I saw the same.. I saw it on one of those nightly news shows where this 17 year old kid won a competition in soul caliber 2, and he's blind! He completely pwned his competitors by listening to the game. It's amazing to see him play!!

SWEAW is very very cool BTW, I will probably buy the full version for sure..

I thought the starwars game was kind of cool. I didn't feel that the galaxy map and fleet management was that great, but the demo is a bit limited, so maybe it really shines when you get in the middle of things.

I'd prefer a full 3D space RTS system like the homeworld series, but that can be tricky for novice gamers, and can see why its top down.

Didn't really bother with the cinematic view as I was always trying to get the fleet manouvers sorted, I'm not sure I'd ever use it.

I think its a game that I'll probably get, since it has a story mode and a free galactic conquest, which I reckon will be a lot of fun.

I hope that consoles will get some better RTS games now that they support higher resolutions, probably not till most people have HDTV though

The demo is a joke, you can only play rebels with only 2 planets to take.
Most of vehicles and buildings are not available. Somehow I didn't like the ground combat that much.
But the spacebattles looked cool. Not as complex as homeworld II, but lot of fun.

Just wanted to share the info that there are some modifications that make it possible to get new units and other stuff for the demo. :)
