Rock music creation - how???

I want to have a go at making some rock tracks for SRX, but the only music creation software I can find, such as the Ejay stuff, seems to concentrate on techno, hiphop, rave etc...

I've found a set of sounds for Garageband -

- but it's a Mac program and I'm not sure if I could use the stuff on the disc on a PC music creation program - anyone know what format the sounds will be in and if I'd be able to use them?

Also, can anyone recommend a cheap music creation program, preferably one that comes with loads of nice samples? The easier to use the better.

What's result gonna be? wav/mp3 or some mod format?

Guitar stuff is always tricky to do.. for some TV series I did recently I had to do tons of it.. but I could mask the non-guitar'ness a bit with layered instruments.. but pure rock .. purely the band'ish instrument setup .. well, not that much you can use for masking.

You need Virtual Guitarist by Stienberg, oh and Cubase to run it on.

you need a real guitarist, a band in fact.

I dont have garageband at home, but i'll check at work tommorow if I get any free time and let you know what format the provided sound files are in. I imagine in the worst case scenario that it'll just be a case of downloading the right codec, and if worse comes to the worse you can always set Sound Recorder to capture the sounds (goto options/properties of the volume icon in the taskbar and set to show recording, then select the stereo mix channel to record from, then open sound record and click record - play a sound file, trim off each end and save out as a .wav at whatever Mhz, bits etc that you want.

I only really want to make some simple menu and in-game music, sort of background stuff that loops nicely. I remember using Octamed on my Amiga which let you sequence musical samples on various channels to create a tune, and I believe Ejay does the same thing, but I really wanted to mess around with rock and guitar samples instead or techno or rave.



Excellent, thank you - if they're something readable by a PC then I suppose I can buy the Ejay rave or techno version and the Garageband Classic Rock disc and then use them together.

Dude, Fruityloops pulls off an ok guitar, it has a special rock fx synth.
Its great for any kinda music.
But I am also a rock guitarist, and FL is nothing compaired to the real thing.
Guess that doesnt really help ya.

Just hire a band for some recording... if they aren't signed you should be able to get them to record a few tracks for about the same price as buying software that won't give you the same quality

I cannot help you with the guitar simulation cause I am palying guitar and never bothered with this stuff.
But for Rock music and for music recording in general you will have to search for sequencer.
Top programs that I have used are Cybase , Sonar but they are highly profesional and expensive.
There is a free vertion of Cubase named Cabasis it's really good for free.
Also for loops and drums you can use reason and fruity loops but this is also comercial products. Fruity Loops it's litle bit cheap but to much anprofesional tool, this is good thought beacause it's very easy to use and to promissing one software evry update make's it really better.
My last thoughts are that If you never recorded or writed music get a copy of Cubasis and WaveLab Lite and the trial of the fruity Loops.

when did Cubasis become free ?
I have seen it for sale on loads of music software sites but I believe it's old and Steinberg phased it out and do cut down versions of Cubase instead.
Personally I would go with FL Studio if you want to make the music yourself, it kind of mixes the best of the loop programs like the ejay series with some very cool virtual instruments.

Sorry Vordeman, i've looked around the machines at work and dont have Garageband, it must have been a customers machine I saw it on. If you dont mind a slow answer I could keep my eyes open and maybe luck out on a customers machine soon, but who knows... I think it's part of iLife so any new Mac's should have it - so you might have to wait until we flog a non-server and you just missed xmas...
