The warm feeling that you helped get the community active again! Maybe even $20 to amazon.com?
Good idea!
I may be finishing Grasshopper soon, so this would be amusing :)
(I even have an idea!)
I don't have webspace to post my game. So I cannot be in this Competition.
Haramanai!
If you finish the game I'll host it at my game portal.
This sounds like good fun, I'll definitly give it a try!
Oooh,
Can I use my Rail-Shooter-maker-type tool?
Actually, I doubt i've got time. Would love to take part though!
I'd love to try but don't have any time :-(
Here's an idea, 2D Operation Wolf style! Yeah.
- Can be 3D or 2D.
How do you picture a typical 3d shooter in 2d?
Where did it say "typical 3D shooter"?
I have this mental image of some kind of duck shooting range type thing...although I think I'll do zombies, they're always good for a laugh.
well, I'm no gamer .. I don't know those games.. hence, I used google imagefinder to find screenshots of those 3 example-titles .. to me they look like 3d shooters :P
Op Wolf is 2D!!!
Does 'track shooter' mean it has to be scrolling/moving? I always liked Cabal, myself.
Think Operation Wolf, Judge Dred, Time Crisis, Ghost Squad.... House of the dead I,II and MI
Yeah, but does the word 'tracking' mean the scene has to be moving constantly? Cabal just had static screens.
I imagine it has to follow a path- Track a path....
Cabal doesn't count, nor does any static screen where you shoot people in windows etc.
Cabal was awesome!
I suppose for 2d games it could side scroll?
Or would static screens be ok? That would be easier for us non arty peeps i guess...
Arg. Op Wolf IS a sidescrolling 2D game that's why I suggested it as it strictly classifies as "on rails" because you can't stop it from scrolling or change direction. Static screens cannot be "on rails" as they are not moving. Hope that clears this up ;-)
Hello.
Can I do a beat-em-up? Sorry :o)
Goodbye,
Jes
How do you picture a typical 3d shooter in 2d?
Well take "Space Gun" [my alltime fav!] arcade game for example: it LOOKS bit like 3D but it isn't. It has parallax walls and (quite badly) animated sprites to create a sense of 3D enviroment and movement, but it was 2D. And the only thing you (the player) could do was to kill the aliens and get more ammo. Co-op version with two realistic guns was a blast - literally! We had that (full arcade cabinet modified so that it was free to play) in our office for a while, too bad it's gone now.

Also Operation Thunderbolt was 2D in 3D wasn't it?
My entry that I am working on with a pal of mine is a 2D side scolling shooter but your ship is on a track. So... we'll see how it turns out...
What is everyone else thinking of doing?
Well Ive started on one which is made up of single screens in 2D.
So its not really a track shooter, but I dont have the skillz to make loads of gfx for it.
Its more like a shooting range so far. If I get the time I'll try and make it side scroll a bit...
Aymes,
Just make an extra-wide image and scroll it, surely? :D
awwww, but I started on one screen! *sulks*
I suppose its not that much trouble...it means more of my horrible gfx though :P
It must scroll or you'll be disqualified! [edit] well I don't make the rules I was just kidding, but scrolling would sound more like the spec.
haha,
I think you have your own style- I quite like what i've seen :)
ARGH! i whish i backup my stuff, I had somthing i made for a different competition (1 button thingy) it was all black & white(well greyshade) track kinda shooter (the first part was free walking, but the second part wasnt), fun too... oh well i might start one see what i can do.
I thought those games (examples given in first post) involved hiding behind a box and popping out and shooting people then moving on to a new part of a level? Is that what we should be making or is it something thats continually moving?
I thught when I first read this topic a few days ago that it was the hiding behind box and then moving on sort of game but now reading all the other post it seems like its the continually moving sort.
Could someone clear this up for me?
Thanks
Matt

Hiding behind a box and then moving on after a bit is of course a rail shooter. So would a 2D one be with a static screen that scrolled every so often. I wouldn't call a successive sequence of static screens a rail shooter though, small difference.
O-kay peeps, would this defination of rail shooter be "close enough":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_shooter
Yea, that'll do.
Okay, how is everyones projects comming? I'm getting a early playable demo read to let everyone try. Is anyone else making progress?
Ive got my static screen version running with my first scene, although you cant kill anything yet :o
Other things got in the way recently, but I should have at least something for the deadline...
Hello.
I've got a scrolling screen with some objects on at the moment. Not much, but I'm busy revising for an exam so it's kind of 'break-time' development.
By the way, when you say 'Black and White' do you mean just black and white with dithering to acheive shading or greyscale?
Goodbye.
He must mean greyscale!
I loved Time Crisis Virtua Cop etc on the PS2, but then I got a plasma TV and of course light guns don't work with them, bummer! I hope the Nintendo Revolution has a decent light gun-esque game that uses the fancy new controller somehow.
Yea, greyscale is what I was implying. It would be too hard to make it pure black and white.
