Transforming Windows into OS X

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Transforming Windows into OS X

I've been using "FlyAKite OS X" in the past to make my Windows XP machine look like a Mac, but I've been having problems. The one thing I cannot do is make the bar up at the top so it displays actions for only the current program. A free method is preferable.

Also, are there any other alternatives besides FlyAKite OS X? I would prefer it to be free, but I'd like to look at paid alternatives as well.

Thanks in advance.

only one question... Why???

The OS X interface is more streamlined.

Does that help you work?

You could possibly switch from silly old Windows to
Linux and use KDE with the IceWM with the Aqua feel
with mosfet's Liquid widget style! And you can set
a top bar to be the MacOS bar like you explained...
Thats' how mine is! :P Mac looks pretty!

Hee hee...
poor M$.....

It might seem crazy, but yes it does. I'm not sure why. It doesn't do anything to the display except change the GUI but I feel comfortable working with it.

There are entire communities out there that focus on this - I suppose asking here was a mistake. I will try elsewhere.

Thank you.

Mac's dont have a registry file, so you'll need to delete user.dat and system.dat.

*snicker* :)

...And look-a-like coded by third party programmers glued on top of win GUI makes it faster and more "streamlined"? I doubt that. :)

O.K. in fact i think that you don't know where to find all those OSX goodies in a Windows version. :) I really love the look of OSX-Panther, but don't want to switch systems, so i decided to use Flyakite by my own. Really nice, but also really incomplete.

Take a look at this side :
http://www.osx-e.com/downloads/
You will find some extra goodies over their that might help you transforming windows to OSX.

What you are searching for is the Finder-Bar.
http://www.osx-e.com/downloads/applications/finderbar.html
I don't use it by my own, but it is the best of all those finder-bars, i think.
My personal choice was to move the taskbar to the top and using Samurize to simply show my systems stats at the top. CPU-Load and so on... Like it was on Amiga's Workbench.

have fun...

I don't remember what it was about, but I once made a joke like that and the person didn't realize I was joking and actually did it. doh

Oh yes !!!
Many years ago I've told someone, that the C directory of the Amiga was created by a Virus called LamerExterminator and that the only way to get rid of the virus was to delete this dir...
As he told me that he couldn't start Workbench, i told him that it was to late and that is HD was crashed...
He simply was to stupid to realize that i'm only joking at him and bought a new HD... tzz

it's just the skin you're changing, not the "streamlined interface"

Best solution: buy a Mac.

Problem with buying a Mac is you get the good interface but everything else sucks :/

Many years ago I've told someone, that the C directory of the Amiga was created by a Virus

I had a customer delete the dev directory because he thought it was for developers... Which was reasonable logic really, but unfortunately it was actually home to device drivers... :/

Best solution: buy a Mac

Then buy virtualPC and MacOSX skin it so that you can run software... ! :)

Many years ago I told someone to type "newcli <TCP:5000" and they did. All I did then was "telnet [his IP] 5000" and I magically had a shell prompt on his Amiga.

Amigas were great.

I never realised you could pipe from a tcp port, mind you, I never found another Amiga user with a network card let alone internet access. Those where the days, virus' where something you only got from dodgy floppy disks... (and a magazine coverdisk, in 1 case.).

Best solution: buy a Mac.

When you've done it, got to this link : http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/topics.php?forum=105 -> read all the issues about the Mac -> scream out your frustration -> open the window -> teach your mac to fly -> switch back to Windows -> be happy ;)

No, the only really good thing about the mac is the look of OSX. Everything else isn't the best solution for private users.

greetz

I think in W2k I had the ability to move the startbar... cann't seem to do it in XP Pro... dont really want to either... AND in the case of pretties... I turned OFF all the baubles of the GUI and have the plainest interface around... all that XP graphics is overlay anyway...

try context-menu of the taskbar ;)
there is an entry to unfix the taskbar. after you disabled it, you can move the bar.

I use both platforms (originally a Windows user), but I now prefer Mac. "The only thing about the Mac is the look" is an unprofessional statement; you're not backing up this comment at all....it's just you shouting "hey it sucks".

Even more stupid is that you refer to the BlitzMax bug report forum; as if Blitzmax bugs are the fault of Apple.

I'm with Joroen there, OSX has many plusses over Windows, such as no virus' or malware. That's a concept that most PC users cannot get their heads around given the sheer quantity of junk they get infected with daily. Personally I use both and preffer the PC, but I know how to remove all that junk we pickup - but my sister, my brother, my parents, and everyone else who nags me to maintain their computers - i'd preffer it if they used the Mac...

ok, never meant to treat you ! why don't you read the whole line ? i've talked about private users !

second issue... when i use the ';)' smilie it is an ironic statement. when you are not open for jokes, then don't blame your frustration on me !
third : i've never used a mac. a friend of mine uses one and is really satisfied with it. but whenever he wanted to have some good software, he switched back to windows.
fourth : you apple users aren't open for critical statements, aren't you ? ;) (ironic)

Allways remember, this is a free world. Why shouldn't I talk about my opinion ?

hell, i've never wanted to hurt someone that way ! It simply was a bad joke, man !!!!

Software compatibility is a double-edged sword: it means Macs can't run a lot of cool programs, but it's also a large part of why Macs don't have viruses. I use a Mac for everything Macs can do (in particular, surfing the web and writing documents, which is all most people need anyway,) and have a PC for the exclusive purpose of working with Blitz3D. If I had to choose just one I would go with the PC because I neeeeeed Blitz, but once the 3D module for BMax is released my Windows machine will probably become just a testbed.

I find mac's sluggish for browsing the web, and general OS stuff. even with dual G5's they don't seem to have the same snappy speed that I'm used to on my windows computer.

I havent used the very latest version of OSX though, so maybe thats been improved. But in the past there was some noticeable lag comparable to my old athlon 1200 v's athlon64 3200+ I have now. And it wasn't isolated to one computer either.

I can use the Internet and read/write Microsoft Word documents with a Palm Tungsten E for about $250.

Mac's GUI is the same as Windows, by the way -- they both stole the idea from the same place ;)

Linux is pretty free of viruses, too. The reason? Software compatibility again. This is easily remedied by Linux becoming the most popular OS, thus causing it to be the target platform for viruses. The same could easily happen with Macs.

Although, I think it's worth noting that while Windows's popularity causes it to get most viruses aimed at it, it also causes most virus scanners and blockers aimed at it. I find it extremely annoying when people make claims that viruses are the fault of the computer; they are the fault of the user, they are easily avoided, and not ALL users get them. For example, my computer has never had a virus last more than 5 minutes, and none of them did any harm. In fact, all 3 of the viruses this computer has recieved (as a result of 4 different users) were detected instantly by my very vigilant virus scanner. Thus, in order to defend my intelligence, I must post my contrary opinion whenever people make this claim that everyone is dumb enough to get flooded with viruses.

I was on a search a while ago for ways to play around with the look of XP, and I didn't find anything that was free... so you will probably have to pay for such big alterations. I think that, at this point, the time that such an interface would save you would not make up for the time spent looking for a way to do it. I've considered writing my own software development management tool but haven't got around to it. I would recommend doing something like that, though :)

my ISP knocks out all the viruses I have ever had arrive in my inbox. they are labeled as having viruses in the subject, so I just made an action that redirects them straight to Junk mail box where I simply ignore them.

With SP2 it's typicaly the users fault if they get a virus at all, so the people you have to worry about are your friends that aren't very computer savvy sending you silly attachments that they got from god knows where.

So far my ISP's fiter has caught every single Virus that has come my way.

This morning I got two my ISP caught, that turn up named:

[Bulk] Alert: Virus Detected but not Cleaned - Attachment Removed [Re: ]

you apple users aren't open for critical statements, aren't you ? ;)

This time I have to side with d:bug, there's a nail on the head there...

I find mac's sluggish for browsing the web, and general OS stuff

Using standard OSX installation options and loading up Safari will reduce your Mac to the speed of virtual memory access, it's my biggest gripe with Apple (see various steam letting off posts in numerous threads!) . If you've tweeked the system install or better yet forked out for a respectable level of RAM then they're actually pretty quick - but that whole "Macs are faster than PC's" thing is all a moot point - frankly if you're web browsing then get a web phone, seriously - you dont need a 2Ghz CPU to browse the web quickly, you just need to get rid of all the junk.

I never found another Amiga user with a network card let alone internet access.

Well, it was the days before broadband, more people had access to dialup modems thru the serial port than any sort of Ethernet thing. If that's what you meant...

Okay, now that we all understand each others (Mac and PC users) lets start a witch-hunting on Linux users... ;) No, just joking.

d:bug, sorry if I may have sound ugly.
But, I think the smiley is over-used, and your smiley referred to the sentence "switch back to Windows -> be happy ;)", not your entire post.

Not that I blame you of this, but lets say someone typed in:
"I hate you, go to hell! I think your profile photo is ugly! And your sister is ugly too! ;-)"

...would the smiley still be interpreted as "I am joking" or does it mean: "the smiley helps me saying everything I want and its a backup for saying that I was joking when someone replies to it".

Still - I am not saying you did - but I think the ;-) smiley is used this way too much.

Back on topic: I am both a Windows and Mac user, and I love both platforms for their own reasons. I am not offended as a Mac lover or something, I was simplly annoyed.

@Jeroen
It's okay, i wasn't angry. After all, i think, that you are very sensitive, aren't you ?

Believe it or not, I allways use this smilie when i'm joking. The few ones who know me here, know that i'm not a kind of bad guy. Sometimes my humor is a bit strange, but there are still some people in the german community who like me. :)

now please lets only talk about the topic.

One nice way to get rid of clutter on your desktop.

Create a folder somewhere on your hard disk, give is a short name. Drag all your shortcuts over to it. then Drag the Folder icon to the outer edge of the screen.

Voila, a new toolbar with all your shortcuts on, wherever you want it. on the screen :) or as a seperate task bar, small or large icons, with words, works for drives, recycle, network places and just about everything :)

Flamewar! yeah... There ought to be some kinda game where you go on a virtual rampage with a flamethower through various forums all rendered in 3D and blast away any opposing ideas. The other ideas/post gradually gain validity until you can barely set them on fire. Eventually you win by realising the futility of your actions and you hang up your flamethower forever and start spreading flowers instead.

More drugs for Grey! STAT!

Awesome idea! At least the first part; then you started with the crazy talk. I shall develop this as a little freeware game.

I look forward to it!

Ahem... no viri on Mac?
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/computer-virus/macintosh-faq/
There are viri on Mac... not a lot but they exist (and some are very sneaky!)

For LINUX:
http://www.viruslibrary.com/virusinfo/Linux.htm

and additional for ALL computers running JAVA
http://www.viruslibrary.com/virusinfo/JavaViruses.htm

PLUS lets face it... MAC may have a trojan downloader running amuck (quietly) this very minute... you don't know.

You don't know about viruses until AFTER they destroy the system or start dancing on your hard disk...

My point: Never say never...

www.faqs.org/faqs/computer-virus/macintosh-faq/

Dude, look at the date. OSX didn't exist then.

Anyway, I do know of one OSX virus

ADDITION: lol @ the honor system virus

This is not entirely true. Linux is already extremely popular as a server OS and it would therefore be valuable to hackers to create a Linux botnet for example with viruses.

The problem however is that on most flavours of Linux as a user you generally run stuff without much priviledges, and therefore it'd be kinda hard for a virus to do much, or even stick around that long. Any damage would be practically restricted to a single user's home directory.

Windows is a different story, because most users run as administrators and therefore viruses have an easier way of getting in to the system. User level security generally under Windows is also less effective than Linux, because there are some important OS files that need to be read/writeable for Windows to work.

I can vouch for OS X, but given it has BSD roots it probably runs users as users until they need to do administrative tasks too, so it'd be more secure than Windows by default.

Critical mass is only one aspect of the issue. There are still vulnerabilities in Linux or OS X that someone could attack to insert viral code, but it's much harder to target something like that then your average Joe Windows user who runs as admin and opens every .SCR he receives in his email, or accepts every BHO he sees.

your average Joe Windows user

Hey!

Joe... I thought the "honor system" virus was a joke? Oy!

And I would like to point out that the more MAC users running around saying MAC is impossible to get a virus... the more of a challenge some computer nerd or CompSci major in college will create one just to show off to his friends.

In addition: a question... Trojan style viri do not require Administrator level privledges... am I wrong?

And I thought worms worked at the root level anyway???

There were 22 known osx exploits in 2005 with 2 still outstanding.

15 in 2004
23 in 2003
3 in 2002

In 2005 for XP there were 45 of which 2 are still outstanding
29 in 2004
30 in 2003
20 in 2002

So a lot more were discovered for XP, but OSX is hardly safe either. I wonder how many more there would be is it was targeted as agressively as XP.

check out this one secutity patch released for OXS which patches 33 security problems all listed.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302163

That's good to know. I think the reason there were less OS X exploits is the exploiters know that there are more people on XP that don't know about virus protection. Most people that use Macs know about virus protection.

Flamewar! yeah... There ought to be some kinda game where you go on a virtual rampage with a flamethower through various forums all rendered in 3D and blast away any opposing ideas.

Damnit, I forgot to grab screenshots last night. I worked on it over the weekend, and it's almost done. I achieved a pretty funky visual style. I especially love the flames; it's cool to just walk around watching characters breath flames, nevermind gameplay.

I'll snag screenshots tonight and post to the Showcase.

Also, this was not a total waste-of-time distraction from Gyroman, because I worked out a number of things that carry over, including working with particles and functions to fade in/out. Yay for rationalization!

EDIT : Wow, I can't believe I just got you mixed up with Pickford.

Um, you must be thinking of someone else.
