Just saw a news item on the 6 O'clock news (UK) about a 21 year old student who has become a millionaire within months (makes £4000 a day) thanks to his website.
They briefly explained how the site works but I don't get it... something to do with selling pixels to advertisers, or something. Eh?
Anyone else see this and can explain? Looked on BBC site but couldn't find the story.

It's quite simple. Its real estate on a web page. He decided to sell pixels for a dollar each. You buy so many pixels (in blocks of 100) then you can place an image and a link to your own web site on your purchased pixels.
What made this idea genious is that he hired a publicist to push the story that he was a student trying to make some money. This of course drove traffic to the site which made it incredibly popular which then meant more people bought pixels - and so it snowballed.
Within a few months he has sold the whole lot and has made his million dollars. in fact the last 1000 pixels went up for sale on ebay and fetched well over £20,000 I think.
People hate him of course - mainly because they never thought of the idea first :)
incredible...I'm still thinking why I must buy some pixel in a page when I can buy a entire site...only for the trafic?
I see. That's the thing I didn't get: what got traffic to his site in the first place and so made advertisers want to pay.
It's obviously not a long term business - just a gimmick. Glad he made some money, though. The @#!*. :P
I am considering putting myself up for an internet auction adoption.

Basically the main thing was the marketing. I saw another simialr site today the milelongpage or something, except it's only about 3 foot long at the moment.

I still can't understand this at all, I mean would you go to a website with lots of links to advertisers?
Surely this is similar in a way to spam, but its the user who chooses to see the spam so it is self inflicted. ^^
And if I am a business why would I want to put my link on a page where there are lots of competing links when I could have a whole website ( or several ) all to myself....or maybe that is it, maybe the companies feel they have to put their link there to compete with businesses which already have.
To me it just seems to go against having search engines in the first place if you have to go to a site and scan the whole screen looking for something which may or may not be there...if you want bananas then go type bananas into a search engine ^^

And for the 1 Dollar per pixel: does this mean they also buy lifetime traffic with it? I mean someone has to host the site.

i remember reading about this and it seems that this guy was a business student who came up with a bright idea and tapped into a niche market.
the people who paid for space were either students or companies trying to advertise to students. So it was a hip student thing really.

I don't get it what you guys dont get. The people who bought adverts from that site will have a huge traffic boost for some months for small amount of money, and the student now has 1 million USD on his banc account (before taxes).
You know I am CONSTANTLY suprised how many people underestimate the BLATANT IMBECILITY of the human race....
but then again... it is those SAME people doing this underestimation!!!

He was bound to get publicity for the idea, but/because it can't be repeated.

He even said in his FAQ about how he sat down and thought of an original and creative way to make money.... Something no one has ever attempted.

From an advertising perspective, this idea almost works very well, and is the complete opposite of a search engine. Search engines are very nice if you know what you're looking for, but what if you don't? This is like browsing a store at the mall. You're not looking for anything in particular, but looking at what's available. You can find things you've never thought of by doing this. But then again you'll probably find alot of things you're not interested in, too.
What this guy has is pretty decent. But what if you could take it further? Maybe make a "mall page" where users could vote like or not-like on different ads, and the page brings up things specific visitors are interested in. Think there's money in that?

Blade Runner <g>) and I do admire the guy's smart gimmick. But it
is just an ad page, so...
