Coop Games?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Coop Games?
Years ago I had the best gaming fun playing all the FPS games as coop, some even had a save capability! Games like Doom1&2, Descent1&2, Duke3D, Hexen1&2, Heretic1&2, Blood, Shadow Warriors, Quake etc.
Does anyone know any decent *modern* FPS that can be played coop, preferably with a save option, this would be totally brilliant in my books anyway!
I agree, I love co-op 2 player.
Only happens on consoles now.
According to the id people, consoles are a much more "social" thing, thus making it unallowed for a PC game to be co-op. I don't think they ever explained why this is, since people often set up LAN networks to play games, or play online with VoIP...
Serious Sam series has coop mode for multi player.
System Shock 2..... which isnt actually all that modern now, but more modern than some of the titles listed.
Actually, its more of an fps/survival horror/rpg type of thing. Multiple people should specialize in different skills to complement each other.
A whole lotta fun if you can get multiple people playin.
Serious Sam, Halo 1 & 2, Doom 3 for the Xbox, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (not really an FPS, but it's fun).. I think that's it.
Yeah, it's hard to find any good multiplayer games. I only know of a few games that supported multiplayer, and they're quite old now.
Although, currently I'm working on a multiplayer version of Snakes. It already supports up to 4 people on a single computer (though it makes for a crowded keyboard), but I'm working on online play as well. I don't know how feasible this would be but I've considered allowing up to 4 people on a single computer for network games as well. But this may prove more challenging than it's worth, in alot of ways.
I agree though, there are not near enough games out there that are ment for several people to play at once.
Yes, Halo 1 and 2, Serious Sam and also TimeSplitters 1 and 2. All 4 allow you to play the entire game 2 player coop. (Consoles only though I'd suspect)
sven coop is in development, and pretty near complete for the source engine. Allows hl2 coop mode, plus other new "maps" other people will make for it.
OK thanks, I was only talking about PC games btw, not console ones.
Now that HL2 coop mode sounds interesting! Also Serious Sam could be a blast, better check that out. Just remembered that Quake 2 was coop (I think). I enjoyed coop so much on Quake1&2 I bought all the mission packs.
Re: System Shock 2, I played it coop for about an hour until I found out that only one of the players could upgrade, this must have been a bug/oversight. I presume it was sorted in a patch then?
I really think coop is the king of gaming, Deathmatch etc can be fun but it's totally competitive. Team deathmatch, CTF, Base Assult etc allow for more coop style play, but I REALLY LOVE working through the single player game with a friend, this for me is the height of gaming. It of course started with games like Gauntlet, in fact a few oldies allowed two players at once. Some other great coop games are Balders Gate etc, controlling half a party each is brilliant.
Hey Grey maybe there is a hole in the market there?
;)
IPete2.
Iron Fist coop! Xmas Bonus coop! Jewel of Orion coop (well shoot'em ups have been done before).
The Conflict: series (Desert Storm, Vietnam, Global Storm) had some nice co-op modes on the consoles, not sure if they were on the PC versions though? Anyone?

Buy a console then, PC gaming is pretty much single player only.
Conflict Global Storm has coop mode on PC, not many people on it mind.As for co-op fps games, Delta Force Xtreme has co-op as Does Joint-Ops, both by Novalogic and there pretty good fun as well.
But I want a Call of Duty/Medal of Honor Co-op game rather than the AI playing the other squad members let humans take there place, storming up Omaha beach while someone snipe's out the machine gun nests :)
ENAY: "PC gaming is pretty much single player only"
Exactly. We need to fix this.
ENAY (mr positive): I have 2 consoles and have played quite a few coop games over the years, Streets of Rage (1,2,3) Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 1&2, Gauntlet rehashed (or something), Champions of Norrath etc.
Lego Starwars PC has an exellent co-op mode.
Friends can coop and parents can drop in and out to help when needed.
I haven't look at that one. I also jsut remembered that Jedi Starfighter on PS2 was able to be played coop. I also played Timesplitters like it a bit.
As already mentioned Serious Sam1 is pretty damn good co-op if you can look past the budget-production values, the game can get hectic, especially in the larger fields when 50+ monsters come pouring out after everyone, too bad the same cant be said for Serious Sam2, which scaled back a bit on the # of monsters on-screen at once thing....
(which I blame on the game being "ready made" for the Xbox)
I can look past the budget values of Serious Sam as it was a totally wicked game. For me it brought back the idea of "hordes" brilliantly. With Doom and other old games they often had TONS of monsters on-screen and rocket launchers were needed to get them all, but when Quake appeared, they "high" poly monsters were too CPU intensive and thus monsters dropped back to only a couple on scren at once and they were harder to kill. This is why I loved SS when I first saw it, it took hordes to the extreme and made me tense as I tried to "mop" them all up, great! Shame to hear SS2 doesn't have as many ...
Can you save in SS Coop?
Cant recall if you can save in SS1 co-op, but I know SS2 had a quick-save/load feature, wasnt any need for a real save feature in SS2 as you can start off at any level you've beaten/are on with your current profile.
(map lengths aint very long, but there's still a crapload of monsters to kill in each one, just not at once)
I quite like the "hoarde" concept of FPSs as well, it was why I fell in love with Painkiller after I got past the shoddy first chapter of it (didn't like the level themes)....huge areas, great graphics, and craaaaaploads of monsters at once, was a major shame it didn't have co-op.
going a ways back... i remember playing Delta Force coop with my kid...
... that was fun.
America's Army has coop play... you've really gotta coordinate with the guys on your side in order to win a battle...

Yeah I liked painkiller for the frantic hordes too, it was really neat. P.S. I think "hoard" means like a "hoard" of treasure ... interesting difference from "horde" which is about creatures not objects, weird.
red: Strangely I've managed to miss Americas Army despite it being free. Call me socialist scum but I'm not sure I 100% want to support it :-|
