motherboard washers?

I'm asking all these dumb questions because I built like a couple of hundred PCs (in a shop) around the 486, pentium 1/2 era and then upgraded my own to 3 and 4, but things move on.

You used to have to fit these brass stands under the motherboard and then fit a little red (cardboard?) washer between the stand and board or was it board and screew (i.e. on top), can't remember. Anyway the case has come with these "bumps" already in place that are the same height as brass supports, and the little bag of screws has only one support in it (for use in non standard place I suppose) but no cardboard washers.

The main point: I am to assume these cardboard washers are now superflous due to modern board design or should I use some from my old bag of bits n bobs?

Shouldn't need washers.

If you look at the mobo where the screws go you should see that the screw hole is isolated from any contacts and so can't cause a short.

Infact, I think the mobo needs a conductive connection to the case tray as it's needed to earth the mobo to the case, or something. Using cardboard washers would prevent this.

big10p first reply is right, any recent mobo should have clear spaces around the screw holes.

The other lesson which can be learned here: Good quality cases will come with plenty of brass standoffs included. It's just one of many ways of telling the obviously good ones from the perhaps not quite so good ones.

Well this case has a "1 brass" rating, hmmm. Actually it was pretty cool in lots of ways, screwless drivebays, giant plastic funnel thing than goes over the CPU fan to an outside vernt, large PSU fan, screwless rotating 90degrees HD bay thing, nice look, screwless sides all in all not bad for a cheapo plus everything fitted first time without alignment problems. Build + test took 1:30, I'm sure this could be reduced a 2nd time now I am used to the case as sometimes the timesaving things take longer to figure out if you've never seen them before!

@GA, well one brass and the bumps as you described them is about the next best thing of all the more modern designs that I have witnessed. Rest of it sounds pretty fair & in keeping with contemporary stuff too. The ones to absolutely avoid are those with cuboid springs - they are truly dreadful things as they mostly just don't work! Then there's fixed alloy studs, which really are a major pain at times. Nylon clip stand offs are a nice enough idea, but I've never seen a good exmaple of them that worked as they should have - they all seem to go for far too cheap and nasty versions, and therefore tend to throw the baby out with the bath water!

The venting thing sounds quite a nice feature.

Yeah, the case was good overall for a cheapie and the venting is cool, if it works. It was hinged as well you you can folder it up to work on the motherboard and folder back in palce over the CPU fan, cool.
