Sig Images

Rather than hijack the thread where this started...

Well ok i've just knocked up this sig and yes by Blitz standards it's bigger than most, although I dont think it's the biggest here.

It's much smaller than signiatures on other forums as it measures just 376x100 which to me seems reasonable. Is it really too big here, what is the ruling on sigs?

The reason for this change is because i'm currently revamping my team web site and the image on the left, in it's full size, is to be part of the welcome screen. I figured it looked nice as a banner and would work well as a forum signiature and be part of an all new fresh look for my team.

Perhaps it just stands out so much because it is high contrast with big bold lettering? Isn't that the point of a banner though ... to maximise the impact of the small space of the image? Or are banner and signiature images really a seperate art?

Banshee: I looks so big to me because I have my desktop set to 800x600. That's the max res my monitor supports (it's a long story).

Keep ya new sig if you really want to. I'll cope. :)

lol. I don't have a website, GA - I've got nothing to say. This will be somewhat rectified early in the new year, though. ;)

My current sig: 376x116 = 43,616 pixels used
Grey Alien sig: 1045x49 = 51,205 pixels used

If the consensus really is that it's too big i'll reduce it though, I was just hoping to have 1 image for all forums but it's no biggy really ... but I have to go out right now so i'll do it later.

Banshee: I was waiting for some analysis like that but it's a false one as really it depends on screen res (which mine makes use of and yours doesn't) because strictly, as I'm sure you're aware, your sig has a massive load of white space to the right of the picture thus almost trebling the pixels used on my screen. Height it where it's at, not width. ;-) back at cha

True, but please don't go bigger than about 750 pixels wide or I'll have to use a flippin' horizontal scrollbar. Having to do so makes me grumpy. :P

Yeah I know, sig modified - is that ok for you guys now or do you still want it smaller, because I could always do a different design.

Seeing as you're considerate enough to ask, Banshee, it's too tall for my liking - it's the kind of sig that will probably make me go and turn sigs back off in my prefs in fact: The image makes a horrid banner - crowded and indistinct due to the original being meant for larger viewing (you've got a perfectly lovely tank there that you could crop to), and the text makes my eyes bleed. Less is more.

EDIT: The above was in reference to the original size. With the smaller one the text is much less abrasive, though the piccy is still wasted.

I agree it's too "squashed together" (particularly in the new size), and the horrible JFIF artefacting around the Banshee Studios "logo" really stands out as not particularly pretty.

Way too big for me, but I no longer care because I blocked all images on your server the moment I saw it.

banshee: Can't you tweak it so the "The Not Very ..." is next to the image, not under then it won't be so tall.

I may have to, but I hope it doesn't come to that. I want to be able to see what everyone has done or is up to. I just don't need honking great images that look like they've come from one of those teenage Photoshop forums where everyone has a 800x600 sig they designed themselves and every forum page is one page of text and fourteen pages of sigs. I'm fine with something small and tasteful like a little banner or button.

I used to enjoy people's signatures, and I'd often click on things people had linked to (to show off their site, or project, or even someone else's project). Oftentimes they'd have a link to something I was unable to find by any other means.

Sadly though, the recent trend of people going nutso with sig images means now they're all turned off. Unfortunate, and I'd rather it was otherwise, but I'd rather not think of the people here in the same sort of way I think of the people on another Blitz site (for different reasons).

I like to enjoy my time here.

There aren't that many sig images.
The people who do have sig images, with the exception of Noel (whos sig image is tiny and non-obtrusive), don't post very often and generally post big and useful things that far outweigh the content taken up by their sigs.

I like Noel's sig.

Noel's is fine, bit dark.

Right those of you with sigs off, switch sigs on occasionally to check out links in peoples sigs. btw, my website is http://www.greyaliengames.com in case you have sigs turned off ;-) It's pretty basic/horrid looking but the content (my games) is way cool!

I've removed my PC specs as I only added them for a joke anyway and in 800x600 they take up too much room.

Actually, the Big Sig problem has been worse in the past.

For a while animated GIFs were popular, up to 300K in size.

My sig is standard web banner size. Whether you like it or not is another matter. I think its eye-catching (i.e. fairly annoying, just like me).
