Half Life 2 for XBox Ladder Bug

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Half Life 2 for XBox Ladder Bug

Just got to the ladder inside the train. I know I'm supposed to get on the ladder and climb onto the roof's train but I get stuck on the ladder. Can't go up or down. Anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Dear oh dear. What was I saying about buggy software? Looks like theyre doing it on the consoles now..... :/

I can't really help here, but did you try just doing it a few more times?

but did you try just doing it a few more times?

for about 45 minutes... reloaded saved games and tried that also.

Not sure it's buggy software. I did a google search and don't see anyone else complaining about the problem.

a piece of dust in the wrong place can sometimes cause serious problems... try cleaning the dvd

What he said.

I managed to skip a whole section of Warrior Within once when the CD Didnt read properly and something got set that shouldnt have- i walked right on through a wall.

You're probrably experiencing the opposite.

That's what happens when people complain about error messages. The game is developed to ignore problems, thus causing amazing consequences.

If worse comes to worse... isn't it possible to stack boxes to get up? I did that with a few ladders because I had too much time on my hands.

Check some on-line walkthroughs, try www.gamefaqs.com and check you can actually go up the ladder at that point and you are not supposed to do something else first. I would say this is MUCH more likely that dust on the disk ;-)

There are cardboard boxes in the train. I'll see if that works. As the FAQs I read, just say climb up the ladder. DOH! I'll try again tonight. Thanks all for the replies.

Yes but, you're playing HL2 on a joypad?

Masochist! Everyone, Physt is a masochist! Point at him and laugh!

Grey- Thanks for the link. All the FAQs say to just climb the ladder.

In any case, climb the ladder inside the train car, then turn to your left.

Now there is a stopped train on your left. Stay close to it and when it ends, go around it and go up the steps and into another train car. Go up the ladder in this car to the roof of it and jump to the roof of a green train car next to you and from there

It's got to be something I'm doing wrong with the ladder.

How could you do something wrong with a ladder?

Clearly something is messed up.

Maybe you can jump at the ladder and grab on to it at a higher point?

I don't recall a ladder at all when I completed it on pc.

Are you sure you played Half-Life 2?

Yup, completed it twice. I guess it just wasn't memoriable. I'd rather play Quake3 or 4.

Have you tried the gravity gun "rocket jump" technique yet?

"Yup, completed it twice. I guess it just wasn't memoriable. I'd rather play Quake3 or 4."

Ahhh! Kill it! Kill it! Kill it now before it breeds!

"How could you do something wrong with a ladder?"

At least you'd think that the game would freeze up if it was missing some code from the disc, and not just restrict your ladder access.

Sswift: you've got an image for any event, don't you?

sswift: I stand corrected.

Hahahahahahaha

It is possible that you have not caused some triggering mechanism to fire off first, and the game gets stuck. See if you can go backward and kill of a baddy or two. (I just read about something similar for a totally different game)

This sounds like the beginning of the game to me... no baddies that you have to kill in that part.

uuuhhmmmm... Fired up the xbox and got it right away. I wasn't lining up properly with the ladder before hitting Y. DOE! Stand down from red alert. :)

HE WASN'T USING THE LADDER PROPERLY! :-D

1. Playing HL2 on Xbox.
2. Not knowing how to use ladder properly.

Not your day really, is it Physt? ;)

Good thing he weren't playing with the "place cylinder, box and triangle in holes" game, as he could have hurt himself severely.

"place cylinder, box and triangle in holes"

Where can I download a demo of such a game?

lol, retort-tastic!

Seriously, this thread was all worth it just to see swift's ladder picture.

To be fair, Valve seems to have overcompensated for the fact that some people found the ladders to be the deadliest enemies in the original game - there's a very definite, somewhat picky mechanism for attaching yourself to such. Take the fact that users can't interact with critically acclaimed software in a straightforward manner as an indication of just how far games (and critics) have to go - one poster here means how many will have had a similar experience in total?

You know over the years I've been really peed off with ladders in certain games. Specifically getting to the top of a really tall ladder, failing to "attach" yourself to it "correctly" and plummeting down miles and dieing or ending up horribly injured.

Try clearing the boxes around the ladder, they may be causing some problems. Worth a shot.

Thanks for reading the thread.

If I had time to waste, I'd photoshop that guy into Gordon's super-suit, as he looks just like him. :-)

I got it. You have to stand directly in front of the ladder and attach yourself. Just operator error...

I was hoping you'd say something like that :P

I don't know much about the XBox version of the game, but on PC I really liked HL2's ladders. You weren't so loosely attached that you end up going sideways off the ladder with the slightest movement of the mouse (which HL1 did), and you aren't completely fused to it. The part that really impressed me, though, was that they actually made it possible to go back down without falling.
