Psychological analysis of online gaming
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Psychological analysis of online gaming
A study is being conducted by some very serious scientist people working in some very serious institute in some country, on effects of online gaming on todays youth.
In
this video they display a showcase of moral degradation. Namely a nasty 9 year old shouting for chocolate milk while a clan match is on.
From this example we can see that we as the responsible game industry (especially all us Microsoft employees) we need to develop a speech filter that detects naughty words in real time and replaces them with BEEPs.
this kid will grow up to be the dad on the couch yelling at his wife for more beer and chips while the NFL does it's thing on the tube for his self(ish) gratification...
my question... why is she arguing with the lil monster... i'd walk upstairs and smack the lil brat across the room, take the friggin machine, and smash it on the floor in front of him...
... then look him in the eye and let him know that i was his mutha, not his slave... and thus i expect a lil respect and consideration due a mother... else, i'll perform the abortion that i was thinking about 9 years ago... post delivery.
oh... wait a minneee... i forgot... this is the new age... you can't touch your kids, or even yell at em nowadays without running the risk of going to jail...
don't blame the kids...
don't blame the games...
--Mike
That kid is a spoilt, undisiplined, disrepectful little brat. That fact this was recorded while he was playing a game is completely irrelevant.
I blame everyone but me...
Well I suppose that is what everyone else is saying too...
People are lazy and stupid... they don't want to think or decide proper behavior. It is so bad where I am that the goverment is breaking its own laws just because they can!
People are lazy and stupid...
Sorry.....i tried....
That fact this was recorded while he was playing a game is completely irrelevant.
However, you gotta admit that its a little bit harder to get of your butt when playing an online game compared to when watching something on telly.
Yeah talk about tie a knot in it.
don't blame the kids...
don't blame the games...
Blame the parents. For starters, I don't think there's any online games suitable for nine year old kids.
However, you gotta admit that its a little bit harder to get of your butt when playing an online game compared to when watching something on telly.
That's true, but I said it was irrelevant because I'm sure that kid behaves just as badly even when not playing games. In fact, I'm sure he'd still be just as much of a brat even if he'd never even seen a videogame in his life. It's down to bad parenting. End of story, although, I'm sure the parent(s) would love to be able to blame it on something else.
I'm sure the parent(s) would love to be able to blame it on something else
Bingo.
kids these days are evil little gits anyway, so i can't se how gaming can make them worse. might even make them better
I don't think there's any online games suitable for nine year old kids.
Good point. If these scientists were so serious, why are letting it happen? Surely they should be studying 15+ yr olds...

OK that's false advertising. There's no scientists =]
kids emulate parents, peers and throw in a bit of their own stuff too.
big10p, agreed.
I absolutely agree that gaming has no effect on kids in those terms, its all about parenting. I've seen my younger brother play all sorts of games and its just momentary fun not something that completely programs his brain. I mean i played games all my childhood (SNES) and i know it can absolutely not change my views on anything in real life.
OK that's false advertising. There's no scientists =]
Well we have to do that so our threads sound serious and dont get closed. No not really, i was just having fun.
Kids lack dosciplin and a firm smack. Got to get rid of political correctness and concentrate on disciplin and good manners. Sometjimf that political correctness seems to hve tried to replace and is often abused to tje benefit of a few.
Unfortunately it starts witk tke paremts. So when new parents grew up like that kid things really don't look great.
Kids lack dosciplin and a firm smack.
Because we all know that violence breeds discipline. Then why not just keep letting 9 year olds play Rainbow Six? Surely accurate military simulations would induce discipline, just like the army does.
Got to get rid of political correctness and concentrate on disciplin and good manners.
While I agree that political correctness has got to go, there is a flaw in your statement. You should focus on self-disciple rather than blind obedience, and what contitutes "good manners" is open to interprentation, and varies with ethnicity. Just because judeo-christian values work for you, doesn't mean it works for everyone else.
The youth in that video is very disciplined - he's not prepared to abandon his comrades just because he's thirsty.
I'm not christian, or religious at all. And self disciplin is something your taught by what you are taught through various sources (in my case, things that influenced me the most as a 9-10 year old were old classics like the Odyssey, king arthur, robin hood, later at middle school The lord of the rings.
Also following the example of my parents, interacting with others and if I look back at growing up, pleasing others always seemed to produce more happiness all around and was most often returned by those I admired.
Not everyone is as fortunate as I since you don't get to choose your family and parents. And I admire those that make it when the odds are stacked against them.
Surely accurate military simulations would induce discipline, just like the army does.
It seems to me anything that requires physical endurance breeds discipline, in the eyes of... someone. I don't know. But playing computer games doesn't count as physical endurance.
The youth in that video is very disciplined - he's not prepared to abandon his comrades just because he's thirsty.
But he did though. He did bugger all playing during that whole episode =]
A swear filter that puts bleeping in is not the solution, in my experience it only causes people (particularly kids) to mispell the swear words or in cases of vox games they'll just mispronounce them. They'll get around the swear filter.
What is needed is something a little more discreet and subtle, like anyone caught swearing, although completely unknown on their own screen, grows a little in size to make them easier targets, or gets put in a tutu.
But then they'll use different words again.
martial arts (some more than others) teach mental and physical discipline, take one up for a new year's resolution.
martial arts (some more than others) teach mental and physical discipline
... you can just go and *** off !
{wax, that is !}
Human beings are naturally selfish and uncaring, we have to be 'taught' to be kind and to think of others. I'm not against education. And part of education is being sure they grow up to be productive and thoughtful. Take the religion of the house, and replace it with good old logic. And when the kid doesn't obey your rules, you punish them, as society will punish them. Punishment is important. And any punishment that a kid isn't scared to endure isn't a punishment, it is a joke.
You don't have to hit a child. You can do other things. Time outs work well until the child gets old enough or smart enough to learn how to enjoy it (a budding sociopath) and for them, you have to crack down even more.
There are people who enjoy what is traditionally considered a punishment. Jail... I for one wouldn't be upset to get free room and board... nice TV and good food... Thats no punishment.
The point of a punishment is to be bad enough to be worse than the reward of the act.
This kid should lose his game. He should be given a time out for no less than an hour in total silence facing a wall, and he should lose all treats for a week. And no idle threats about it.
And every time he does it again, it gets worse.
If he finds a way to enjoy or not mind the time out, you replace it with something worse... like doing dishes by hand even tho they are clean. By making a food he doesn't like for diner and give him no other option for food. Or better, by extending the time out for another hour, and another, until it is clear that he no longer enjoys it. 5 hours on a stool facing a wall for a kid is torture.
kids need guidance to grow up to be members of our evolved social system. We are required to defy our nature for the better of society as a whole.... it is very sad that society is starting to lose the values that matter, and keeping the values that are not effectual. Like religion.
when the kid doesn't obey your rules, you punish them, as society will punish them
Exactly. These days, everyone is forgetting that society punishes
with no hesitation or remorse. Either a person learns his lessons
when he is young and the punishments are superficial, or he gets
screwed over when life hits him in the face.
All this P.C. stuff is getting way out of hand.
Human beings are naturally selfish and uncaring
But I do disagree with that one. I still have a bit of faith.
Drew
Human beings, when not 'taught' to be 'better' become selfish.... no one becomes anything. We are born selfish and uncaring, because our minds are built to seek pleasure. Not to do things that don't easily or obviously bring pleasure back...
So we have to learn that to ultimately be happy, we need to make others happy.
Otherwise, we would just do what instantly makes us happy... like this kid is... he wants the milk, so he screams for it till it arives... it comes. he is happy... and as long as it keeps coming.. he isn't going to need to do it another way..
He is acting like a baby does... crys till it gets what it wants... not because it wants to be annoying, but because it gets it what it WANTS.
getting what we want is what our minds try to do... thats what life does... trys to get what it wants and need and all other things be damned.... unless you exist in a society and require that society... but those situations are learned... not instinctual.... anyone who says otherwise doesn't understand how children are reared...
in other words, if we were born caring and unselfish, we wouldn't need to learn it...
Valid points to an extent. The argument that were born selfish and uncaring is irrelevant, and plainly blind.
We're born, generally speaking, as 6 to 8 pounds of flesh designed to interract with a world that our species has dealt with for longer then history has documanted. We are not selfish by nature, as being selfish is a point of view, and a choice. Weather you want to admit it or not, being selfish has to be choosen, else you would not have the destinction between generosity, and selfishness. A person is selfish when they don't care about the consequence of not earning what they desire.
Back to the bit about what we are by nature... logically speaking, unless you believe that emotional tendencies(Beyond genetic irregularities that: cause depression, or neuralogical structure which causes someone to explicitly not process information, on the whole, like everyone else) and emotion are passed through DNA, then the only answer is were born to cope with the the worlds problems. By this I mean like dying from the cold, or being able to walk and resist gravity... or evade a predator, not the sociological and cultural design weve created ourselves. On that same not, in evolutionary view our society is too young for anything like social interraction to in any way effect DNA, or how were born. So were born to A: reproduce, and B: not die.
Under those circumstances, pleasure is out, pleasure in the classical definition of what we are is the biproduct of reproduction and thus, not a drive for our kind. Not dying however leads us to out tendency to thrive for success, and surpass those around us. This means we either adapt to what is around us and learn to manipulate it, or we fail to expand our selves and grow to be better then the next guy. We as humans don't operate purely on instinct, and instincts have largely been overidden, else when a woman walked by a man, he would simply take the opportunity to reproduce and rape her. Why doesn't this happen? Because in general we've been trained not to do so, because it's wrong, even though our instincts would tell us otherwise, we choose it to be wrong. So, the argument that were born as anything other then an advanced, sentient neurological network with design weighted lightly by instinct, goes out the window.
People only replicate, magnify, and modify what they see, based on previous experience. Proof for this being in the fact that our brains have neurons dedicated to replication of what they see, and the magnification / modification of this input comes from previous restructuring of the neurological connections in our brains(past experience) and the fact that we judge and apply observations on how they apply to each of our experiences, and our lives.
A person is only as good as the people who have guided him, and the genetics he has recieved. We aren't anything by birth, and that's why I have hope for the future, because we can choose.
On that note, obviously his parents have failed to apply an understanding that you don't get what you want by crying. Discipline comes from respect, and children aren't stupid, so if they see their parents being lazy, they will be lazy. If they see their parents yell at each other over petty issues, they will do the same to their parents.
[Edit] If you don't instill the facts of life early in a kids life he's never going to understand, and the kid in that video will never understand, he's a spoiled brat.
I don't blame parent for everything, genetics as I said plays a part in the way a person learns, and sometimes, you just won't see eye to eye with a kid. But I do blame lazy parents for a lot.
When I say pleasure I am talking about the primative sense. Meaning. We are 'designed' to do what we enjoy doing. Our brains are 'designed' to reward some behavior, or can be tricked into rewarding some things based on chemistry.
by designed I mean through evolution.
We seek pleasure, that is the most basic of our instincts. It surpassed even our desire to reproduce, as it dictates our discovery of reproduction.
Unlike more primative animals, we aren't born with as strong an instinctual side. Since we come from a long line of animals that have gotten smarter and smarter with time, and a group of already highly social animals all the way down to pre-man and pre-ape mammals, we have a deminished sense of instinct. This has some really great reasons, since a society can use group thinking to overcome a task, and the defeating of instincts can mean the continuation of the genetic line in ways that other animals couldn't recover from.
An example might be the choice to become nomadic, which takes instinctual animals genetic changes to produce but can be spawned in 1 lifetime for social animals.
Also the choice to NOT reproduce due to negative situations. Such as a bad winter and little food for children or pregnant females.
We are one of the few animals that needs to be taught about sex. We can discover masturbation on our own, but not know what use to make of it. But we find it through our search for pleasure.
We avoid painful things, and are attracted to pleasureable things.
We might not even have an instinctual aversion to death. We fear death on a mental level, but we fear pain on an instictual level.
When I say we are born selfish, I mean we are born to seek pleasure.
We eat what tastes good, and we do what feels good.
But I agree with most of what you said.
