Good old Windows

Aggh, I'm stuck. :(

Blitz3D doesn't work anymore, I get unable to create 3D Scene in any resolution, even Windowed mode fails. Why? god knows.
Blitz2D and Max work fine, just not Blitz3D.

Installed DirectX again, Installed Gfx card drivers, flying kicked computer many times. Nothing.

Now what do you suggest I try?

Did you try restarting your computer?

u know what most will say; Re-install.

I say re-invent. Specificially a new type of PC without crappy old architecture and M$ OS and recode blitz 3D yourself and then you're away!

Your not running WindowsBlinds or similar are you?

I had similar trouble and it went away when I uninstalled that.

Ahhh... I remember this one.

I had to go without any 3D graphics for 6 months because of this. It completely stumped me. Tried everything. Nothing worked, searched the web, nothing etc.

Then I stumbled across this one day:

Enable, then disable desktop sharing. Problem solved. 3D goodness restored.

It is the single wierdest weirdest solution a computer problem, in the world, ever. I have never even touched desktop sharing before this... and why 3D graphics have *anything* to do with desktop sharing? Argh!

And it is for this reason I bought a mac.

What, you switched to an OS that uses even more useless eye-candy?

There's no hope :( We'll never go back to the good old days where they just made functional operating systems with two colours.


Are you sure just a fullscreen scene with the same screen resolution as your desktop, featuring a cube, will not work?
I have this with my very old and useless computer, but it seems to run very basic stuff fine.

System Restore is a good option if you are using Windows XP or 2000 or even ME. It is in All Programs - Accessories - System Tools.

This has got me out of many a hole before now, as it leaves your data inplace and simply restores device settings, drivers, etc to setting where you knew they were working.

There is a chance taht it may do the job - I hope it does.

If it's XP, and system restore doesn't work, then try a window repair, by booting from the windows CD. You won't lose any information on the hard disc, BUT, windows will be back basics, IE. you'll need to apply patches for the blaster worm... etc and download the service packs.

What is your pc specification enay? What cpu and graphics card? Just curious.

IPete2: Win2000 does not include system restore. That's probably the one advantage of using XP...

My PC Specs are 2Ghz, 256mb ram, NVIDIA Geforce FX 5700 Ultra.

Still isn't working, I'm using Win98 and I just can't be bothered to reinstall windows as I've only done it recently.
I guess I'm just gonna have to live without Blitz3D on this machine for now.

Do other 3d programs work? Games etc ...? Do DXDiag tests ?work

I had problems like this back in the day on Win98.
Here is what I did:

1) Restart computer in safe mode (F8 on bootup)
2) Un-install Nvidia drivers.
3) Select standard VGA as your display adapter.
4) Re-start normally. On boot up DO NOT re-install nvidia drivers.
5) Download and use Detonator destroyer.
6) Re-boot again.
7) Install latest Win98 Nvidia drivers.
8) Should be good to go ...

This has worked for me many times.

PS: Make sure that the 3D scene you are trying to create is within the meory limits of your GFX card. ie. don't try to create a 1600X1200 32 bit screen if GFX card has only 32mb of memory. Also don't create a scene that is not supported by your card (check supported modes in driver tab.)

ENAY: If you've got a Dell PC, I've got a Windows XP Home unused license and disk if you want it.

Probably it wasn't such a good idea to melt the cheese on the CPU cooler then.

A lot of good tips here, esp the one by Hambone. Sometimes when you checked all software issues, it turns out it's a hardware thing! Maybe there's a self diagnose app for your graphics card? Try at least to: remove the graphics card, then plug it in again and scratch the contacts a bit while you replug it. Also, if there are any chips on sockets on your Graphics Card, make sure their working by pressing the chips down with some pressure. Needless to say: take care not to destroy any chips when you touch them with static load. Use rubber gloves.

I also have a few (thousand) lying around. No kidding either.

I NEVER allow active content on my desktop or desktop sharing... Used to use windowblinds but no more... too many weird problems. Good thing you sorted it out though! :)
