Wireless problems

My lovely new Acer Aspire 5000 arrived for me today. I have a wireless network setup which works with an exsisting laptop with an external card.

I turn on the new laptop and go to the windows search for network's and it find nothing.

So I think it's simply out of range and I take it next to the access point and still nothing. All the network works with wired and I can get onto the internet but when I try to access the internet using the inbuilt wireless it simply doesn't work and can't even find it.

I ad this with one of the types of laptop we get in at work. Turns out it had a physical switch on the front that disables/enables wireless. Tried looking for one of those?

I was about to say that. When I worked at Yacom's tech support a lot of clients with laptops had that same problem

I had a similar problem when I updated the firmware on my wireless router, turned out that in some laptop wireless implementations (I've got an intel wireless chip), they couldn't latch onto the higher channels (I think the router defaulted to 16, laptop only had options up to 12).
Set the router to channel 1, and the laptop connected.

The channel can be configured where you configure the wireless card.

Things to check:

Wireless

1. Is yer laptop in the same Workgroup as the other PC's on the network?

If not yoo won't be able to share or pass files to yer network.

2. Have yoo set the Wirless laptop to find the Wirless SSID in the router?

If not yoo wont be ablt to connect to yer network and if the SSID is set to hidden there is no way for yer lapttop to know it's there.

3. have yoo enablbed MAC Address restricted access on yer Wireless Network?

If so make sure yoo have entered the correct Mac address for yer laptop in yer routers allowed list.

4. Do yoo have WEP enabled?

If not Windows will not allow yoo to connect to it automatically at start up.

5. Do yoo have file and printer sharing enabled?

6. Is yer firewall(s) set to allow traffic to and from the relevent IP address on yer laptop?


All the above are things that I check when I have wireless problems and any glaring errors or ommisions are due to me not having had my first cup of coffee of the day yet. :)

Thankyou for all your help, this is coming wirelessly from my new laptop.

The problem was the one you described Blitztastic. Thankyou so much I was almost ready to send the laptop back fearing it was a hardware problem but no, you've solved my problem so Thankyou. The channel was set to 13 but now is set at one which works fine.
