I made some of my own sound FX for Iron Fist but really want a portable setup so I can walk around ouside with a mike and recording device and sample stuff for my games. I toyed with getting a voice recorder that uses Flash Ram or whatever but someone said the voice is all compressed and thus it's crap. It really need to record at good quality but don't want to use a tape recorder and mike as it's so "undigital". What do you think the best (well and most cost effective) way of going about this would be?

We used a "portable" DAT recorder (digital audio tape) when i was training in Music Tech, however, 5 years ago, this thing was like carrying a desktop pc with you ;/
Flash RAM usually means it gets recorded into Mp3- so yes, it might be too low, but its up to what you need. I personally wouldnt use one either.

Get a portable DAT from ebay, you can get a real nice one for a couple of quid nowadays.
Can these portable Dats record at non compressed levels i.e. not just for voice? Also can the info be transferred digitally or does it have to be "resampled", what a pain?

Dat recordings are stored digitally with no lossy compression. DAT is (was?) the industry standard for high quality audio recordings, but it can get to be quite expensive!!

As Jams said, DAT is uncompressed. like a WAV :)
wheather it has to be resampled depends on the hardware youre using. Our's had an Optical out which could be used to transfer it to PC.

Depends on what you're trying to record, the recording is only as good as the mic which with most portable stuff is crap because you've got no gain.
Although not as good quality as a DAT is sounds 'good enough' for most things get a recordable minidisk, you tend to have to resample it back into the PC unless you get a really expensive one.
Get a portable mic preamp (usually takes a 9V battery) and plug a decent mic into that then into the minidisk.
Record away!

Yeah a preamp is essential for mics. some good advice from all there thanks.
Thanks tonyg, I downloaded wavepad which is free and found the microphone stuff useful.
Laptop with decent microphone?
It's just that a laptop isn't exactly "Star Trek" in terms of portability really, but it'd probably be quite good.
