My oldest proveable web presense

Heh, I found this really old post by me (Jake Birkett) from 1996, I seem rather proud of my 28.8 modem lol. I started with a 14.4 and BBSs a while before that. Have any of you got any old references on the web?

Hey Jake you have too much time on your hands dude! Lol, seriously though, my earliest actual web presence was using the Amiga, on a slow but sure 14,400. At that time I was IPete.

The first web site I ever designed has long since gone, but one of the first commercial sites I did still exists. 1997/98 I think. I originally did this for aonother company, then once I left and set up SmartScreen (2001) they brought it to me and asked if I would help maintain it.

1999 for me... I was late getting on the internet, but ironically the person who got me online was IPete2. In his generosity he posted me a modem, and let me use his Demon ISP account!

Anyhow, I found a post of mine on a guestbook here. Not telling which one it is, although IPete2 will know. :)

Well not really a web reference but back during my "puberty years" of discovering of girls and computers in the early 90's, I somehow aquired one of those internet-based emails through a local BBS on my 2400 baud (not 28.8k, not 14.4k, not even 9.6...but a 2.4!!!) modem and had long winded discussion about the existences of extra terrestrials with professors and "experts" thousands of miles from me........of course most of the time I was talking trash and messing with them....but it was still ground breaking back then....

gman: your site has nice windows 3.1 style buttons, remember those?

lol - it's true.

IPete2 is also indirectly responsible for me getting married! I used to play games on Yahoo (chess, checkers, card games etc.) and met my future wife. Long story short (3 trips to the USA and 1 trip for her to the UK), she moved over here and we got married (October 2001).

The moral of the story is this... I may have been late getting on the internet, but I put it to good use when I finally got online! Or something. :)

mousey, that's really cool! My brother in law is English and his wife is from the U.S. and she moved to York (U.K) to get married to him.

My first online Presence was as 'Zando' on Micronet back in the Stoneage... Circa 1987 ... I think. :) With a few posts on BB's a couple of years earlier.

In 1994 (or so) i was getting my first PC, and the guy who brought it was impressing us about how there is such a thing in the world called BBS and you can actually transfer a LOT of text and even some pictures over computers and phone lines. I was shocked (it was the DOS days)! People actually communicated by typing????? wtf?? I think he was just trying to sell us a modem tho.

Of course then win95 came and when i saw first digital video i couldnt beleive my eyes.

Man, I got on the web kinda late, but I have fond memories of my first BBS calls with my borrowed 1200/75. Phew. When I upgraded to 14.4 eventually I never thought I'd need anything faster. Until I got on the web ;]

Somewhere before then, though, my first web presence would undoubtedly still be hanging around on AmiNet somewhere.

I believe an old web site of mine is archived in some sites caches somewhere, too...

bbs days where the best :( im 24 and been using ckob since I was 9 so yeah about 1990. wasnt until about 94 that I started posting on boards and probebly 96 or 97 i started using chats. I did use mIRC when it first came out back back when.

I started doing the BBS thing in '91, and got my first internet connection in '94.

My first pretty pathetic looking website dates to '94 as well, but the provider that hosted it is long gone. I don't miss the days of their 30MB/month international download limits, that's for sure.

There's no longer any remnants, but I first starting using the Internet in 95 or 96. At the time a friend (who incidentally is now a web designer) got me hooked on a MUD, plus he got me to create graphics for some sites he was working on, which led to me creating my own first website.

I almost have a provable web-presence from 96, because I created this image for a local RPG shop:

Unfortunately, while the shop and website still exist, they are no longer using this image.

Thats huge....the 2400 baud modem I had was built into my 486sx....which was high end stuff back then....

The oldest posts I could find was from 1994 featuring a discussion about some CD32 demos we did. I'm just about to junk my Philip's CD burner from back then which cost some NZ$10,000.

I did the math.. I was 13 when my dad first got the internet i'm 22 now.. that means I was online in 96... but I don't remember when I got my geocities account... It was actually before I got the internet (a friends PC) and so I bet I was online in 95... But I can't prove it...

His site was a Godzilla fan site and my site was for our band... Moshka... no.. we never actually played anything... I later converted it into my table top RPG's site.. Argh Checkmatie... but it no longer exists on geocities..

If anyone can find the old Argh Checkmatie site backed up anywhere.. I will kiss you.

bummer I thought mine was the oldest "proveable" but skidracer has beat me (suprise ... not). Also I remember the first CD-Writers, I worked in a computer shop and a guy bought one, it was as big as a PC and cost thousands and he planned to make CDs of some crap or another, 2 years later they were £300 quid and I bought one, haha, HP early model, never really used it enough to justify the cost but it was cool!

its really too bad... It was a fun little open source chessboard RPG. A bit tough on the stats tho... the numbers were too big.

Uk C64 users used to have a good laugh in there. I used to do reviews (badly) on there, late 80s.

I found two of my earliest Usenet posts from 1992: about DoMark's Virtual Reality Studio and the Twiddler hand-held keyboard ('cause VR was gonna rule the world! <g>). Some of the Amiga folks here might remember VR Studio since it was originally for that system.

WendellM: Yeah that's pretty old, I remember the studio too, I think, was it the one used to make CastleMaster etc?

That name vaguely rings a bell... if it's what I'm thinking it is, then it was created with something like '3D adventure creator'...

Grey: I never played Castle Master, but it certainly seems closely related (both it and VRS used Freescape, and the interface is familiar). It looks like Domark made a series of adventures, then released their technology as a construction kit.

Toby: It seems that 3D Construction Kit is another name for VR Studio (they probably changed the name due to the interest in VR at the time).

Heh, me too - it's 13 years later and I'm still looking/waiting for the best/easiest way to create 3D games (with nothing completed to show for it... <g> ).

^ Yeah, I thought that including a videotape tutorial was a good idea. If I hadn't sold the software used, I'd still have it. And Carrier Command came with an audio cassette of its soundtrack to listen to when not playing the game (IIRC, done on a high-end MIDI setup that sounded a lot better than on my PC). :)

Pre-CD games tended to be pretty inventive in getting their content to you like that. Back when I had a TRS-80 Color Computer in the early 80s, Rainbow magazine would occasionally include a flexible 45 RPM record with programs on it. You'd record it onto cassette and then load it normally - that was a lot better than typing in the program listings!

Oh, and to keep sort of on-topic in this thread, my first modem (which I bought for my CoCo in 1984 for $100) was a 300 baud manual-connect. I'd pick up the phone, dial a BBS or CompuServe, wait for the tone, then flip the modem switch and hang up the phone. CompuServe was something like $6 per hour so I mostly stuck to free, local BBSes. Let's see, the BlitzMax demo is around 8 MB, so that's something like 60 hours to download at 300 bps, = $360 if downloaded from CompuServe. With my current cable modem it takes 3 minutes to download; given my monthly bill, that's 1/3 of a cent. I love technology advances... :)

Hey, you just reminded me of some game that came with a music cassette for the C64 (I think), what was it, any ideas. Can't even remember if it was any good, think the cassette was black.

I used to love plotting those pixels into the calculator to draw those images! I did some pretty good ones at the time. The best one I probably ever did was a Dragon Ball Z game ... I did the logo even and it was pretty rad.

A google search of my most common avatar brings up 1920
legitimate hits, while my own name brings up nothing.

My oldest stuff must be some atari st game releases. I used to write my first homepage on an atari. Unfortunately all those free webspaces are gone. I found a page with ripped soundtracks from games. I guess it was about 1997 or so when I releaed this late atari game:

When I used to write that, 1995 was science fiction :) So I think it was released in 1994. Tho "doom type engine" is really a shameless exaggeration by someone.
