PS2 drive

Does anyone happen to know if the DVD drive in a PS2 is the same as a standard PC one? Our PS2 committed hari kari onto a marble floor and pushed the disc drive off its runners!

It has to be able to read black CDs (or was that the PS1?) and also if it ran at a different speed I can see it being a problem. It's probably best to buy a 2nd hand PS2 off ebay.

Can't you open it and replace the runners? or are we talking about different things?- I'm thinking about the rubber plug things holding most drives into place- not sure if the Ps2 has them though.

Grey - I had a look at ebay prices - at least £80 to £90 for second hand - £99 for new from Argos would be better value.

Cygnus - I've tried fixing drives before - ended up buying a replacement!!

It's possible to buy replacement drives you fit yourself, but unless your PS2 is special (ie Chipped) it's cheaper just to buy a whole new one.

Buy a new ps2 and sell the duff one on ebay as spares and repairs, someone will buy it :)

Black = PSX CD
Blue = PS2 CD
Silver = PS2 DVD

All of them work in my DVD-ROM drive on PC apparently.

As for whether you can swap the drive, no clue.

Black CDs as you call them were on sale for normal use in PC too. I could read them with my old CD drives which are long dead.

Black CD's are considered the best of the best, so it should be easier to read them than other CD's, if anything. I suspect the unreasonably high Ebay prices are because shops are having a hard time keeping the PS2 in stock ( yet again! ) Parents are liable to panic in December and pay more than things are worth. You could try a few second hand shops locally, though, to see if they're more reasonble. But I wouldn't be surprised if they're overcharging too at this time of year.

Possibly. To be honest, I don't really know what second hand shops charge for PS2's. The long and short of it is that there's more demand for the PS2 than for any of the other consoles, so you may well be right. If they can get away with overcharging, they surely will. I simply mean that at Christmas, demand goes up even higher, so they can probably charge more, or at the very least find it easier to sell at the same price.
