Anyone know any decent free or dirt cheap (but still effective) speech recognition software? May a GNU thing or open source of some kind? Thanks

THought you are talking about some kind of 1984 thought control thing... "Attention, Mr Anderson, illegal free speech action"
Hey, the Microsoft SAPI Speech Api contains STT (speech to text, contrairy to TTS). It includes a lot of example source.
although, huge download. They allow to redistribute it:

say, thanks guys I'll take a look.
Are you looking for some speech recognition software to run on your own computer to help typing documents or whatever, or are you looking for a speech recognition library or something to integrate with a project of your own that you're working on?
Major difference, depending on what it is you need it for.

xlsior, actaully for now, just to run on my PC, the sourceforge once from above has exes and source so it's pretty cool. Years ago I downloaded 300MB of Microsofts speech SDK, but never got round to using it. I just want to use it to speed up my forum posts and emails and manuals that I write. I have used speech recog before with pretty goods results but my package was limited and had bugs and is no longer supported so I want to try another.
Is the bottle neck really the method of writing? I think I can type faster than i can talk....
And anyway, I don't come up with stuff fast enough to max out my typing speed.

I find that most Speech recognition software doesn't work for me unless I put on an american accent.
Personally I find it a lot faster to type than to use speed recognition: at over 80 wpm 'burst' speed and 70 words per minute for longer times, it's lot faster than having to go back and put proper formatting and fix stupid voice interpretation mistakes than it is to just type it 'right' in the first place.
Especially since my native language is Dutch, I have a pretty strong accent when speaking English which leads to a lot of words that the speech software doesn't recognize reliably.... But whatever floats your boat. :-)

I used the Microsoft SAPI Speech Api ~ a year ago, though for me it was way slower than typing, because the faster you talk, the more errors it produce, lol. If you get it working for super fast typing_by_speech I want to know (mail me or something), because then I'm going to give it another try. Same goes if you find another software that might be more solid, than MS's.
I would like a an automatic spellcorrecter for written text. So that words like "repaet" (typed to fast) get changed into "repeat". Without it being application dependant. However I don't even know if something like that exists.

Many word processors already do that with commonly misspelled words -- both Microsoft Office & Open Office automatically change 'teh' to 'the', just to name one.
Openoffice doesn't auto-change the 'repaet' though.
If I speak like a british newsreader it works :-)

I once took a technical support call from a very drunken sounding Scottishman with the thickest accent i'd ever heard who was complaining that ViaVoice didn't work for him. I was suprised the keyboard understood him to be honest...
However I do think that speach relay is under-used in multiplayer games. An MMO with speach relay would be something else, if only...

If I had a thick accent, I'd understand, but that's not the case. I don't have a particularly strong accent (so sayeth a lot of people).

...who probably all live in your area?
Few people consider themselves to have an accent. It's just us 'furriners' who acknowledge that we do. ;-)
