Which UK ADSL

Looking for an ADSL provider which is around £15 a month... but does not have a set up fee...

I do not mind if I have to provide the modem or not. If I have to provide a modem I would rather buy an internal ADSL modem. What experiences do you have with those too?

ADSL? I use 123ehost but that costs $50.00 us a year. I don't know about the setup fees right now and I am unsure if it is ADSL for you.

Well, Wanadoo offer a pretty good service for around that price but have a monthly bandwidth limit so I'm guessing you're not interested. :)

I've had no complaints with BT (British Telecom). No setup fee, they supply a modem and 2 filters, £17.99 a month for 2MB speed, with 2GB monthly download limit. Plenty fast, and never any connection problems (in my experience).

Not worried about the bandwidth anymore and it has to be UK :)

I have a few friends using plusnet with no issues.

Another vote for Wanadoo from me. No problems thus far and it`s £14.99 for the first six months.

I've used BT for a few years now no problems at all - never had a connection issue. They supply ADSL modem.
Wanadoo seems pretty good too and I think they do an 8mb connection too.

Will I need to buy my own adsl modem?

I've stuck with AOL for my 2mb connection, no limits, and I just bypass the software totally.

If you mean with Wanadoo then no, they supply a LiveBox for a wireless conection.

Bulldog seem reasonably reasonable.

Whoever you choose, make sure you're not tied into a lengthy contract. Especially check that you don't have to pay a lot of money for your supposedly 'free' modem if you leave the ISP.

I have no experience of the cheap ISP's so I've got nothing specific I can tell you, sorry :)

I use Tiscali.

For £14.99 a month I get:
- Free Modem (I've got 2 already - Don't want another)
- 512Kbps - I actually get 1MB (how odd)
- Uncapped - Yes really, no cap at all.

for an extra £2 I get free UK calls!

I hear Wanadoo cap you bad as do Bulldog. So it's cheap upfront and then they sting you with extra bandwidth charges.

I read the TOS for tiscali: if you wish to leave before 12 months have elapsed, then they will charge you for the remaining months. You are tied into a one year contract with them, from the moment you are first billed.

I use freeola, have done for ages... although the cheapest is £20... half price for the 3 month trial period.. but they give unlimited webspace/email addresses, static IP address, php etc etc..

I did a fair bit of reseach into uk isp's and found that,for my needs,plus net had the best package offer.

They have,so far provided me with an excellent,8mb, connection with no-outages and profide full php,cgi support with 250mb of webspace with no download limitations.

They do sound good. Shame they charge you if you leave.

Pipex are well worth AVOIDING at all costs.

Could you say why?

yep,pipex are terrible, I left them and they refused to give me my router address so I couldn't connect with anyone else. This went on for 8 months, email,phone call after phone call to no avail. Eventually it was sorted,but they then took £320 straight out of my bank account with no warning even though i hadnt been provided with a connection since i ceased the service and I had completed their min 12 months contract.

I did get the money back thankfully,but that took a month too.

I trust that brief and frankly minor glimpse will more or less suffice? Obviously not minor for the above poster of course.

In case you're not sure: Off the top of the head; they often fail to supply the following: Working & clean DNS, reasonable routing (UK to UK via New York? - they keep fixing it, and it keeps coming back) Promised 50Mb web space, mail server that works in a satisfactory manner, news server that serves news. In fact the only thing that didn't work at first but now does is and has ever since, is the connection, and that's down to BT alone. They also expose their own internal lan to the wan as part of the routing (a complete no-no for even a networking dunce I think) They use sequential acount names, and don't allow you to change that or your password - trust me you can't begin to imagine the spam that gets to a pipex users mailbox. They don't answer the phone, do e-mail or do fax, or reply to letters, recorded delivery or otherwise. They ignore court documents. They have no customer service because eveyone there is new, all the time (imagine the staff turnover that has to imply!)

I found mysef running my own Domains, DNS servers, MX exchangers, mail server, web and usenet server - On the upside I have learned much, much more than I otherwise might have.

You still want pipex, fine, but you now know why their slogan is "think beyond the connection", because frankly you'll have to, since they don't deliver beyond that.

Why not leave? I don't feel confident in their ability to correctly perform the migration (would anyone after all that?), they will just render a perfectly good phone number and line useless instead. I'll change supplier when I move, it won't be my problem then. For now I'm held hostage though. I can go with a connection only deal next time since I now own my own ISP.
