Wait, did I misunderstand something? Magnavox wanted to patent the idea of a video game in general? Or just the tennis game?

Yeah, and put in a patent for breathing while you're there. You'll stand just as much chance of getting that patent approved as the video game one. :P

Dude, I am so mad my parents did not patent "input device for an electronic based gadget". I would have been paid for every keyboard, mouse, button, remote control... ... ...

Hmmm, I just visited the patent website and submitted A,E,I,O,U for a patent AND a trademark.... so:

Technically your parents would have been paid.

Anyway, a patent won't be granted (or can be invalidated) is there is prior art and are only valid for a limite dnumber of years, so it would have expired by now anyway. :-)
