for James B (Blitz support)

First, for everyone else's information, I had a copy of
BlitzMax 1.09 sitting on my webspace (because I bought
the digital version and do not have a physical copy)

I got an email just now telling me that someone here
(James from Blitz support) somehow found this file and got the webspace admins to delete it.

That's alright, I understand the reasons for doing so.
And I apologize for any trouble.

My question is: how did he/you find it? I haven't given
the url of that file to anyone (and I never planned to)

Is there some way to browse the files in my webspace
that I am not aware of?

maybe it showed up on google!

Consider yourself lucky they have viewed your case with the best intentions and not deleted your account as well.

They obviously gave you the benefit of the doubt so why are posting this @#!* here? Your question is:

So email james. This is a private matter between you and them.

drew should be kicked. Who knows how many people downloaded BlitzMax before it was deleted.

IMO it's quite a stupid thing to do to put a commercial app you bought on your webspace for backup purposes. Anyone with half a brain cell could have found and downloaded it.

No they couldn't. Besides which, even if they did, what good would it do them, they wouldn't be able to syncmods anyway? Besides which 1.09 is ancient history.

Yet Mr Boyd found it and asked the server admins to delete it. By the looks of it anyway.

The reason I have not emailed James is becasue I don't
know his address, and I would like to learn as much as I
can from you guys as well.

BlitzMax still needs a user name and password to synchronise mods - although it was silly to do , I think it sounds like it was an honest mistake.

If you've no CD/DVD burner, .zip it with a password and rename the file to something obscure and then upload that.

I don't think that's a good idea. There is rar, zip password cracking software available and with todays PC power the password could be cracked.

Also, a person who could afford BlitzMax must be able to afford a CD Burner. You can pick them up for less than £30 these days.

Drew - maybe you have downloaded it with a browser that tells referrer and history information to servers, so any server you visited after the download could read out the adress of the file. Google tends to list such links AFAIK. One more reason to turn off referrer and Javascript. Other than that, I don't know how someone could find a file in a folder of a webserver that denies directory listing unless he's seriously hacking into it.

But they weren't private, were they? It would have taken 30 seconds to password protect the folder to stop casual snoopers from getting at it. If you did that, then I agree, but if not, they weren't private at all.
