help come up with a URL

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/help come up with a URL

im trying to come up with a good URL for the Irrlicht mods and thought id pose the question to the crowd and see what surfaces :)

so far the best ive thought of is:

irrlicht4blitzmax.com (or .info)

submittal by Slenkar (from the post in Programming):

easyirrlicht.com

Difficult - 'irrlicht' hardly trips off the tongue. :)

irrlicht4dummies.com
gmanscoolmods.com
whoneeds3danyway.com
blitzmax3dmodule.com
bmax3d.com

I like irrlicht4blitzmax.com. :-)

Is irrlicht german cos it sure ain't easy to say or type.

blitzmods.com

earlicked.com...everyone will remember it and you will even get some visitors looking for something else entirely.

i agree with earlicked.com easy to remember.

i'm a hog... so... All the really great URLs I've found I keep to myself...

like... my3balls.com which I decided I couldn't think up anything to put there.. so if you want it you can go get it...

I'm thinking it would be a good sports page... but I hate sports..

unfortunately it has no relation to what you are doing...

Whatever name you decide on, just skip the .info TLD -- Too much (ab)used by spammers since they're so cheap to register, so a lot of people avoid them.

You may want to consider a more 'generic' name than 'irrlicht4blitzmax' for example, to make it easier to expand/switch to differen areas.
I used to use the domain name pbarchives.org back when I was into PowerBasic. Worked great, but when I moved to other things the name kind of became pointless and I switched to a different domain name.

I also agree with what Xlsior said... Stick to .com ... there are lots of people that just remember the first part of the URL.. and assume it is .com since most sites are. And so, I can't tell you how many times I will have bookmarked a site and remembered nearly the whole URL and then one day I'll be away from my computer and need to go to... say... www.i-sketch.net and type it in as .com ....

just the first .net that came to mind.

And if you make it obscure, as a .info is... people will never find it.

but... honestly... urls don't mean as much today... people will bookmark the site or just slam in a search into google... I don't remember the URL to get to maddox's page.. I have it bookmarked.. and if I am somewhere else... I google the word Maddox...

Yep, exactly what I do. Good ol' Google!

yes. Content quality is finally more important than the name you give that content. But, if you plan to ever do ads outside the internet, EVER, it is still important to have a good URL. People who don't know much about the internet are going to need that URL... they might forget to bookmark, and not know how to run a good search. But due to the nature of what you are doing.... I doubt you are going to ever run ads on the radio or TV... nor are you looking for internet noobs to come to your site.

thx for the recommendations guys i really appreciate the reponses :) bout busted a gut with 'earlicked.com' :) and also had a pretty groovy MaxGUI app idea when i read 'blitzmods.com'. im down to the following in the order i like them:

gmods.us
gmods.ws
gmods.org
modsbyg.com
modsbygman.com
gmansmods.com

personally, im partial to the gmods line, but not sure what extension i would like best. the others are more difficult, but have the .com extension.

thoughts?

I once had my ear licked in a stripclub, but that's another story...

I'd just do gman.com, that way you can make it multi-purpose
and put other stuff on there too... But that's just me...

thx for all the comments. after considering them all and seeing what is there and what is not, i decided to go with:

www.gprogs.com

there will probably never really be a cool website there, but at least it can be a central location where the stuff i have done can be made available.

thx again everyone :)

If you've got PHP + MySQL as part of your hosting package, a good content management system is a great way to set up a good looking website very quickly.
