Can anyone recommend a cool free tool to convert MP4 to MP3 or Ogg and that also allows the user to cut the samples as well. Or do I have to save to Wav first to cut them and then reconvert back to MP3/Ogg?

Youre prob better off converting to WAV first, though other tools may exist. [edit] youre better off not converting, and getting a WAV from its source.
Cant even guarantee these days that a WAV didnt come from an mp3 :(

OK, that's 1/2 the equation, OggDropXPD lets me encode to ogg from wav, now I just need to get the mpeg4 (m4a) to wav. How can I do this? Obvisouly I can play the m4a files but does anyone know how to directly sample the soundcards output as a wav as this would be easiest?
Does SoundForge not do this?

Open up iTunes
Open the iTunes preferences
Select the "Advanced" tab
Select the "Importing" tab
Change the "Import Using" to your desired target file format
(set optional settings such as bit rate)
Click "Ok"
Load the song into iTunes
Right click on the song and select "Convert selection to ..."
Repeat steps 7 and 8 for all files you want to convert.

I have Soundforge 8 and it does not have support for MP4

iTunes is free yes.
well some people eat goose at christmas ... so I still need to convert MP4 and MP3 to wave so I can pass them into the ogg convertor? Ideas? Way to capture sound card output as wav when playing mp4?
FlameDuck: looks cool thanks, but I'm trying to do it on the cheap i.e. for free. I have wavestudio editing software, I just don't now how top convert from mp3/4 to .wav.
Rip it through the soundcard.
Set your mp3/mp4 player to output to a bunch of channels.
Get you WAV recorder to record from those same channels.
You can even do it with Windows Mixer and the crappy recording software they supply as standard.

Some soundcards have an internal loopback that can map the output back into the input (ESI Waveterminal series springs to mind), might be an idea to check your soundcard doesnt support that before you procede...

Itunes will also convert mp4 to wav
OK thanks all, I managed to convert mp4 to wav by using Sound Recorder and setting the windows volume for recording to use the "What U Hear" channel, I could have used the Wave channel too. I found a way to make sound recorder make > 60 second samples too. Then I converted using the OggDrop and it's realy good. Now I have replaced a couple of tracks in my game with some nice cheesy xmas ones, yay!

Try it with the "Wave" channel too, if possible. It may differ for you, but I get extra hiss via "What U Hear" that is absent in Wave. If you bought a soundcard then you probably got some better recording software than Sound Recorder.
If you're still on the look out for good, free conversion software then http://www.dbpoweramp.com is cool (and has MP4 support). I'll have to check out OggDrop.
