TV on PC

I see several sites who stream live TV channels with no extra hardware required to your PC.

Are they legal, are they any good?

heh, theyre okay. REALLY low quality usually. You can also get software to do it.

I suspect it's a way around TV licensing for the UK at the moment- but probrably not for long :)

Aww, come on. Even 600Kb/s streaming video is only just watchable, about as good as a mediocre VHS player.

When we've all got 8Mb (or faster) broadband, then I may be interested in streaming video. 8Mb being quite reasonably capable of streaming at DVD quality using MPEG2, or a lower limit for streaming HDTV quality WMV or DivX.

Some sites ( none of the above ) seem to charge a one off fee of around £20 and let you watch SkyTV but I would assume that this was totally illegal.

Aha, it just so happens that on the coverdisk of this month's PC Format (UK) is Online TV Player 2.8.

I'm currently testing the free version - it basically has selected freeview channels from all over the world.

The full version - lifetime upgrade - is only $29.98

Personally, I love it. It is just weird to be watching foreign TV and there are loads of countries to pick from.

I have a set-top box for UK Freeview broadcast channels - but some of the ones included with this online app are not available normally on Freeview. In fact, I hadn't heard of some of them.

I recommend people give the free version a go - it's only 1.68MB

what's the legal issue? Is it pirated? What about TV license? I ask this as I have given up TV cos it costs too much and I waste too much time watching it.

In NL we have www.tvopjepc.nl ... not live .. just stuff that was on TV earlier.

Some of the stuff that comes with the APP I posted above is probably recorded - but for foreign televison it won't matter as you won't know - unless you look at their television listings. Some of it is probably running 24 hours behind.

Some of it seems live though. I just been watching the news in Sweden. Not understood a word of it, but I like watching the pictures.

Some of what they are showing is clearly for the internet - I logged onto an ABC news channel that mentioned it was an internet feed. A lot of this is probably stuff you could access yourself if you searched for it.

It probably is all recorded - I just reconnected to the Swedish news channel and it played back exactly what I just watched.

Still, better than nothing.

Holy crap....some of the stuff from other countries.....are just plain HILARIOUS!

Most of the Russian channels (From this program) are either crap or don't work...
And all can be accessed absolutely for free from their websites.
And I already was full of dreams of watching quality russian TV for free!!!
