Anyone Score an XBox 360?

That's so funny. Could there be a more perfect irony than scalping XBox 360s?

I haven't even seen one yet. I dropped by Frys electronics but they didn't have anything but a PC controler, only other shops I go to are grocery and pet stores :( for supplies.

Did mess with the controler, but it seemed too small. Prefer the size of the old controler S. And the analogue sticks didn't have enough resistance for my tastes.

I can think of so many ways to spend the $720 that would go for the top of the line bundle at walmart. $2500 is just insane!

I'm interested in the xbox, but these prices are way too high for a game console, especially when nothing seems to be mind blowing. There was a pretty obvious jump in visual quality moving into the last gen, but this time around its not all that great, and I wont even get started on the gameplay factor.

heh, yeah. Xbox had some real nice launch titles, but very little else for the remainder of the year. I think I played 3 launch titles and bought 2 more amazing games throughout the first year. But don't think I got my moneys worth.

Same with Xbox live, it was a fantastic gaming experience, but initialy no developers really believed in it, so XBL support in games within the first year was almost non existent. And even a paltry $50 anual subscription seemed a rip off.

The best thing I ever did to my Xbox was soft mod it with a splintercell save game. It makes for an awesome media player/home entertainment system. And still beats Xbox 360 by some considerable margine in this area.

Microsoft already announced that there will be price cuts within a year.

Currently I'm holding off till oblivion. See how that compares to the PC version. If that doesn't sway me, I'll hold out till it either aquires a HD DVD of some kind, or gets a $50 - $100 price cut.

Currently Xbox 360 launch seems to be following the footsteps of xbox, and isn't worth the premiums with bundled games.

Oblivion the game, or oblivion as in "you can forget about me ever buying one"? ;-)

The only games I have are Crimson Skies and Mech Assault. I think I got my monies worth on those alone. Including XBox live fees.

Too bad the XBox doesn't have DVI connectors.

I'll not be getting an Xbox 360... all the games I want that arre coming out on it, are also coming out on the PC. Or are so unplayable for me on a console that they aren't worth it.

IE, all FPSs. Unplayable on a console for me. So I don't bother.

The only FPS I could control (without frustration) on a console was Serious Sam on Xbox. I was stunned by how well that game translated to console. one of the very best PC->console conversions you will ever see, IMHO.

With some luck, Revolution will turn that little nugget (which I agree with incidentally) on it's head. But that's still a big if.

Somehow, I get the feeling that the launch has somehow turned into a bit of a damp squib. Maybe we just haven't yet seen the hype of "all sold in day one" and "xxx,000 sold in 5 minutes", but this time M$ don't have the killer title like they had with Halo (although PGR3 seems to come close). And many of the "launch titles" are also available on the other platforms, so why bother upgrading? Don't get me wrong - if in 12 months time 360 has proved itself, has the games I want on it, and PS3 and Revolution don't live up to the hype, I'll consider getting one. But not right now, based on what we've got so far.

I doubt I'll be getting a Ps3 or Rev in the first year.... I didn't get a Ps2 till about a month before FFX came out... and then... I got it because I realized FF9 was never coming out on the PC like 7 and 8 did...

so I went ahead and got myself a ps2... I may never own any of the next gen consoles... I have so many games to play on all the other consoles still that I will be contented with getting a GCube for uber cheap in a year....

There are plenty of games on that I will be able to play just fine...

I'm a strange bug tho... I don't care a lick about graphics. For me it comes down to playablity and gameplay.... so I will never own an Xbox unless they fix that god aweful controler and pick up some games with more depth than graphics... aside from halo 2, all the good games that came out of xbox came out on everything else eventually....

I don't much like the GC controler... but I can at least hold it with my little hands... (i have small hands)

If the Rev is really as new and awesome as it should be... in other words... if all the games use the new controler and not just the old GC controler.... or at least enough that it isn't just a novelty but a legit controler with legit games. Moreso than the DS. I might pick it up.... but it won't be in the first year.... I went the entire run of the current gen with only the PS2... and before that I had got my brothers hand-me-down N64 (hand-me-down only a few months after it's release... my brother is like that) and before that... SNES... and so... the ps2 is really the first console I owned... since the NES... all the others belonged to either my parents or my brother....

Haven't slept yet either ... didn't get one at Midnight and instead had to wait out at CompUSA. Unfortunately I was number 15 (later 14 since someone dropped out) in line and I could only get a core system since everyone and their mother wants the premium one. I feel a bit ripped off really (though I didn't have to buy a bundle or anything).

Last night was crazy ... I checked out every store in my area and all of the ones that didn't open till the morning had lines outside ... like 20 or so Target, Wal Mart, KMart, Circuit City, and Best Buy ... crazy lines. I feel luck to have picked one up ... but still a bit robbed by the ole MS for this stuipd Core vs. Premium BS.

X-Box360 is just a polished turd really. I can't see any benefits it has over the original X-Box, same old crappy FPS, Sports and driving games.
Without proper support from Japanese companies, the dire selection of games will continue.

And Revolution is a great idea but I'm afraid to say there just aren't enough gamers out there to embrace something new, I can see Nintendo bringing out joypads soon after it's release, otherwise if they don't the Revolution will sink even faster than the Gamecube.

Sony will continue to dominate the console battle, as if just by default.

Or mod chip it so you can play stuff like MAME, yep finally a reason to own an X-Box, to not bother playing its games.

OK, first hour with the system ...

1. I get ticked off because I can't sign into Xbox Live ... so ...

2. I check out Project Gotham Racing 3 ... nice graphics, sounds, controls ... superb background detail (but somehow the street itself doesn't look as bump mapped delicious as the original games ... maybe I need an HDTV to pick up on that. After a few laps in free mode I get tired of crashing into walls and leave ...

3. Load up Perfect Dark Zero ... play quick deathmatch before dinner. Graphics are less realistic and more stylized ... more my style I like them so far but I get bored of deathmatch with a single bot ... feels uninspired as well.

4. Eat dinner (still no sleep ... food is a good substitute).

5. Come back a bit refreshed and begin Perfect Dark Zero Single Player Missions. Hmmm ... ok this seems pretty slick. First few bits are somewhat sparse but looks decent enough and feels pretty good.

6. Near the end of the first hour and into the second mission. Wow ... this game does look very close to Toy Story rendering. It's a lot of scripted events but it's pretty fun to play ... and although some parts don't look too good ... the parts that do look good are really really great and I've hit 2 spots that I just fell in love with ... and the controller is just a work of art for me ... fits my hands like a glove!!! Ok, I like this game a lot ... now lets ...

7. Try to sign into Xbox Live again ... get @#!*ed again ...

8. Try to make a whole new Xbox Live Account ...

9. Xbox Live isn't working on any level ... grrr....

10. Call friends over to play ...

So, I'm having a decent time with it. Perfect Dark Zero is fun for me ... it's very stylized and looks good. The missions so far are linear but I don't mind that so much to begin with ... hopefully they open up a bit.

hmm, probably your router or ISP. Have you tried plugging it straight into your modem into the internet without the router connected?

Whether you like the Xbox or not depends on the kind of games you like. I don't like any Japanese games really, and can't see the attraction, but then I'm hard to please and easily bored with quick simple pickup and play gameplay that dogs most Japanese titles.

I doubt I will like Perfect dark come to that, the graphics are ok, but I'm really not interested in FPS games any longer unless they are more of the Operation Flashpoint variety.

Project gotham is probably my cup of tea if its anything like the old ones. But I will miss the regular cars. Supercars are for the most part boring. Still it does have the Aeriel Atom and Elise in, which is always fun.

I think Jeremy shoudl get a BGA cable so he can play in HDTV res. Shame they are $40 or something.

I think the best thing about HDTV is that we might get to finaly play decent PC like RTS and RPG games on the TV soon, and other genres that I typicaly enjoy the most but don't really get on consoles due to the resolution of TV's.

It can connect ... but Xbox Live Signup is unavaliable ... it seems like all records are inaccessible or something.

It made me smile. I'm not saying that XBox 360 is crap... but rather that this is a rather uncommon event, where the console doesn't even start out ahead of a not-so-new PC. Usually those things appear maybe a half year ahead. I'm curious what the reason is behind this...
Anyways, I'll reserve my judgement for a while. Launch titles never show the full capabilities of the system.

The 1% that I disagree with is that my computer, which cost less than $800 CAN over a year and a half ago, is able to pull off some pretty nice stuff. It is far from their definition of a gaming rig, though.


Judging by large lineups, it sounds like it was a successful launch.

I think Microsoft were a bit lax with their QA testing, wanting to get all the big games that were almost done ready for launch. There's really no excuse for letting Quake 4 out the bag as a sloppy port that doesn't run properly on the hardware.

Perfect Dark went final before passing QA, luckily it sounds like their game was ready for release, and passed later.

Ok, got it to work ... Geometry Wars is great ;) Marble Blast Ultra is no where to be found. One cool surprise is Outpost Kaloki ... I might pick that up again!

I picked a premium 360, perfect dark, and kameo. ( Also, I got geometry wars too! I've been playing that more than anything else today. )

Erm weren't they meant to be selling at $499 for lowspec, $699 for midspec, and $999 for the high spec?

No. Sorry, I don't get it. How about the people who bought an XBox 360 so they could sell it on Ebay for a several thousand dollar profit in less than a day? Does that qualify as a waste, or does that seem like a pretty good investment?

In either case I'm sure any given charity would have rather had the several thousand dollar donations over the 430 dollar one.

So is making the XBox 360 in the first place, not to mention standing in line for several hours just to get one, because you absolutely have to have it on day one. Never mind people who bought a lesser XBox 360 than the one they actually wanted, because it was the only one they could get.

At least try putting things in perspective. The "Smash my XBox" people paid for their XBoxes just like everyone else. In doing so they helped make Microsoft money, which they use ammoungst other things to pay workers in the 3rd world countries the XBox 360 is manufactured and assembled in, thus strengthing the struggling econmies of these empoverished countries, probably doing more good in the long run, than most charities.

Look I'm sorry y'all didn't get the electronic toys your wealthy life-style demands on day one, but "Smash my XBox" wouldn't have changed that. First of all, it was only one XBox, and second of all, even if they didn't smash it, and instead used it for playing games, you wouldn't have gotten one anyway, because you wheren't willing to stand in line for 55 hours to get one.

was going to get an Xbox360 but changed my mind at the last minute. When push came to shove, seemed like a lot of money I don't really have to spare :)

I'll probably get one in the new year, in the meantime I've got 2 weddings and christmas to get through, hehe.

I got one and 5 games, and LOVE IT.

Definetly worth the money, and the new xbox Live and Marketplace is great (bought 7 live arcade games already)

Call of Duty 2 - Great game, equal to what you see on a high end PC, but its a PC port.

Condemed - This game is simply amazing. Graphically, sound, gameplay and the ability to scare you.. its great.

Kameo - Very fun and very nice looking game, its pretty amazing with 1000s of ORc on the screen at once. Gave me that Mario 64 feeling while playing it, so thats good.

King Kong - Good game, shows its old generation roots with textures, but its fun, graphics are great in spots, sound/music is great. Really fun playing as kong

Quake 4 - DAMN, nice looking, same as PC but found it a bit more fun, and xbox live rules. Q2 is with it and I cant wait to beat it

This guy smashing his XBox is making a statement, and a damn good one I think.

It certainly got noticed, and he got his money's worth of publicity.

Not everyone here is dying to get their hands on the next-gen xbox, and not everyone here manages to think beyond the point that its just another corporate day of commerce.
The point he makes, is that (in my mind) your life doesn't become better, and the status symbol that the xbox 360 currently is, won't change who you are in the long run.

One thing I now know about the 360, MS cut costs by making the system less sturdy. Seem to recall the old Xbox could be shot with firearms and suffer little more than a scratch.

Some student tested that out too if I recall. Wonder if the guy that smashed his 360 was a student too?

We all buy stuff every day that we don't really need, and very few of us give money to charity on a regular basis.

is it really a more noble cause to buy a machine to play on or to buy a machine to smash to pieces?
when people have bought their machines, and go home, we don't really care how they use it, do we now?
if someone bought a 360, and never plays a single game on it and just lets it collect dust, is he less entitled to the product than others?

Because its just a piece of hardware at the end of the day.. not food or water, or anything else on the human rights list.

AshMantle, At least you put your argument across in a polite and thoughtful way. I actually agree with some of what you said. At the end of the day it is up him what he did with the console. I think smashing it up is kind of dumb, but hey - that was his choice. I suppose what made it easier to do was that it wasn't his money which bought the console in the first place!

Yep, Flameduck's right. Sure it's a waste of 430 dollars, but so is buying any console whether you choose to smash it up or use it properly. If you feel that bad then why don't you donate 430 dollars? At least when it's smashed up you don't contribute to global warming by using electricity. Anything you buy that isn't food could be given to charity, but then you wouldn't have any for yourself. Besides no matter how much you give to charity, there are always gonna be people starving and these days it's worse than ever.

It made my day that someone smashed up their X-Box, so in my opinion that was money well spent. :)

I am not sure if there were actual cheaters when I was on XBox Live, but there were many occasions when people did seem to be just a bit *too* good. Or maybe it's just that I suck.
