Best language ever...

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Best language ever...

I went through a period where Blitzmax confounded me and annoyed me: part of the problem was being given conflicting information from people like flameduck: he'd say "this is what you could do" and give me a totally complex solution. (no offense to flameduck)

Then I'd try that, fail, run around in circles and think it was just a bit too hardcore. Suffice to say, I tried other languages such as C++ (and became quite competent in it).

Moving on, I tried all sorts: Torque2D, Popcap framework under C++ and so on..

And eventually I came full circle armed with a lot more experience.

I just have to say: Blitzmax is genuinely a language that deserves to exist. I would not say that about Blitz3D (it is just a basic variant with an engine IMHO and although well done, it does nothing ground breaking)

But with Blitzmax you get a sense that theres a fair bit of love behind it and when you get into it, it is actually professionally thought out.

I had to use some of Two Eyed Pete's routines and rely on the patience of many forum users and finally it's clicked:

Blitzmax is the best programming language on the planet... A lot of people will sniff at this and have their doubts (I know I did) but I do have the benefit of experience in just about every other language...

So if you're thinking "I don't need blitzmax" then think again, try it again... and be patient cos eventually that patience pays off.

Nice one Mark & Simon.

is qbasic.

Hey that'll explain all your angry replies lately :D

Mmm, I wonder people will make of Cobra?

BlitzMax is the schizz. It's largeness is is only matched by giants in a large form of largeness. BlitzMax is highly capable in doing large. It's creators are large. It's users are large. Largeness is the way forward.

To code in Max is to large it great. Largeness is the future.

English.

Amon, is puki large? ... ffs

Totally agree, having used the demo and looking at the wiki. The large companies will be idiots for not using it also, esp when more modules are around. Its Mark's greatest work of his life.

But Blitz3D is also too neat.

I still dont own Max, in "protest" to make Mark finish the 3D module as soon as possible. When its finished i'll buy it. If its not finished by January06 i'll buy it anyway :(

Language of lurve!

Blitzmax is nice. Hard to code in Blitz3D after using max.

..best language ever is the one bringing me more money from product done with it..by now, the best one for me is Blitz3D since I'm earning very good money from this architectual things and all done with Blitz3D..once Blitzmax 3D module is released, I will be glad to make next step with better tools..right now, appart from my satisfaction what I really like to use, is more important practical point of view...and this is Blitz3D...man..brand new Isuzu trooper in past 6 months...its worth...its worth..

is there a guide for people who are familiar with blitz3d?

best language ever?

c#

What Poed said.

After using BASIC for years and then bumbling about with
Java, Darkbasic and C++ with allegro, I can agree that the
"power-to-ease of use" ratio with BlitzMax is higher than
anything I've ever used or heard of.

I tell anyone who will listen about it. I got two people
from the programming department at school plus one
within my major to try the demo. I will continue to
spread the word, and continue to impress people with the
programs I make with Blitz.

So you're an elitist, well elitists generally end up being unemployed or tried at a warcrimes tribunal.

Heh... You imply that you didn't start learning other languages until after blitzmax came out... Then say that your opinion was based on "the benefit of experience in just about every other language..." Thats quite the contradiction because I guarantee you that if you think you are quite proficient in many many different languages over the course of less than a year... You are deluding yourself.

Your summation that blitzmax is the best language by far may or may not be true. But to base it on what you are basing it on... Is ludicrous. :)

Using BlitzMax's OOP implementation is a true joy. It just makes things so much easier and clearer for me.
With the new SuperStrict directive too I'm learning to be a more disciplined coder as well.

It's all relative, to me at the time Blitz Basic 2 on the Amiga was the best language ever, but it's not any more. C++ is still the daddy but BlitzPlus and Max are much more fun.

I really enjoy BlitzMax as well. I have tested various alternatives and I think BlitzMax is the most productive choise. Very JavaScript without all the needless hassle.

What Noel said.

I'm currently addicted to D.

I agree with Rob :)

... Engrish.

Is there even a D compiler? I checked out a page on D a while back and remember being very impressed with the author's insights into what is wrong with C++. Is it a real language now?

My bairns are learning Eggy language atm and its drivin me NUTTTZZZZZZ!!!!

I blame their big sister for introducing them to it..sigh

My favourite language is Japanese, I could listen to it all day :)

Sorry to bring this back from the grave, but I had to add my tuppence. Which is, predictably, that I agree with One eyed jack.

I can see Kanati's point about not being able to explore the depths of C++ in a few months. When I was worried that B+ wasn't going to cut it, I tried a bit of C++. I know that I didn't give it 100%, but the reason for that is simple. I quickly realised that whatever constraints B+ placed on me, they were nothing compared to the constraints that C++ would place on me. The stress of learning something harder outweighed the benefits that I'd gain from it. I knew that I'd rather make something less ambitious, but enjoy making it. I made the decision to stick with Blitz before Max came out.

One of the major draws of C++ was the power of OpenGL. During my time dabbling there I saw just how great OGL was. Putting just what I want on the screen really requires it. I'm not going to get drawn into D3D/OGL comparisons. I don't know enough about the subject. What I do know is that D3D is based on OGL. And it's windows only. And I don't like Microsoft :) The real point is that I don't need anything that OGL doesn't supply.

When the news came out that Bmax would allow pure OGL programming, I knew I'd been sold it.

For months now I've been plootering in Bmax. With the release of the GUI, the Last Great Reason not to Code Seriously has gone. Having no other excuse, I've been getting into it properly, and it's just beautiful.

Last year, as I was coding the last version of the game that I'm now re-coding in Max, I'd look at BBPC code of my own that was just two or three years old and be stunned at the way I wrote. Using BB for three years had completely altered the way that I'd approach a problem. To the point that I could hardly believe I'd ever done it differently.

Over the last few days I've found myself looking at code written only a year ago, and shaking my head in disbelief at how obscure it looks in comparison to my Bmax code.

I remember posting something last year about growing to occupy the space that a language gives you, while being protected from the nastiest parts of making computers work. I feel pretty right about that feeling just now.

Add to all that love the extraordinary low price point. Add to THAT the highly honourable (from my point of view) marketing strategy. I'm a big fan of BRL.

Hear hear!

I think there is no 'better overall language'.

But talking about indie games developing -maybe stepping *a bit* into bigger commercial titles- and general purpose apps, Blitzmax is surely the best option there is. I cannot describe it, but I feel very comfortable coding in it, I do it fast, good, and it's very powerful.

However that doesn't mean I'd use Blitzmax for *everything* (in fact I'm not doing it)
