Hiya,
I simply need a translation of a short phrase for my game into various languages:
[English] - "Select Color Depth"
Languages (still) needed:
[Portuguese] - ???
Solved:
[German] - "Whle Farbtiefe"
[Danish] - "Vælg farvedybde"
[Finnish] - "Valitse vrisyvyys"
[Norwegian] - "Velg farge dybde"
[Spanish - Castellano] - "Elija Profundidad de Color"
[Welsh] - "ddethol arlliwio eigion"
[Dutch] - "Selecteer kleur diepte"
[Pig Latin] - "Electsay olorcay epthday"
[Swedish] - "Välj färj dybd"
[Spanish - Catalan] - "Tria Profunditat de Color"
[French] - "Sélectionnez la profondeur de couleur"
[Italian] - "Selezionare profondità di colore"
[finnish]
"Valitse värisyvyys"
Great, thanks!
[Spanish - Castellano] "Elija Profundidad de Color"
[English] "Select Colour Depth"
Only joking. :) I've actually started using 'color' in all my stuff now, too. If you can't beat 'em... :P
[Danish]Vælg farve dybde.
Tho' you might want to choose a "less technical" term.
Gracias amigos.
[Norwegian]
Velg farge dybde
[Welsh] ddethol arlliwio eigion
although, why the hell you would even want welsh as an option is beyond me? There is hardly anyone who knows the language left! It is as good as dead.
Dutch: 'Kies kleur diepte' or 'Selecteer kleur diepte'
Pig Latin: 'Electsay olorcay epthday'
[Glaswegian]
Wit's yir culler, chief ?
You could try just repeating the English instructions a bit slower and a bit louder until all the foreigners 'get it'.
Pig Latin <g> (whoops, xlsior was first)
What bout people who talk jive?
Selection de Colors [Mexico Spanish and Tex-Mex]
Yo da man wans U 2 b pikkin yo colors blood [Ebonics]
ickpub ouryub olorscub [ubby dubby]
Thanks again guys. Still some missing.
You can grab an older version of the game via my sig link.
All languages mentioned above in post 1 are fully supported.
Erm, can't you just use
Babel Fish for this, Grisu?
[edit]That doesn't seem to do english-to-swedish, though. :)
There are Swedes around here, but since no-one has said anything, I'll have a go.. I *think* it might be something like this:
[Swedish]
Välj färj dybd
By the way, it's 'pig latin', not 'ping latin'
"Elige" is Select in Spanish.
I tend to speak common Spanish (as heard in everyday life and not text books).
I've seen something along the lines of..
"Elige el color de profundiad"
Although I feel thats intonating select the deepest (most profound) colour.
"Profundidad" would normally be used when you are talking abstractly about depth - he's very deep (emotionally) etc.
A better translation would be:
"Elija el límite del color"
Select the limit of colour

[french]
Sélectionnez la profondeur de couleur
[English] - "Select Color Depth"
Well I would like to see "Select Colour Depth" - Being British and seeing "American - English" in software only makes me cringe. It's lazy and it is nice to see "British - English" as an option.
I refuse to buy a printer if it says "color inkjet" on the front when being sold in a UK shop. I wouldn't expect the French or German language used as text on a product so I don't put up with different spellings where possible.
Just a gripe :)
I agree, Qube. I hate seeing my language being disrespected.
(Funny that you'd say French, though! I've had to memorize the French name for quite a few quick consumer goods... Quite strange, really. I hate to imagine what tourists think.)
Although, proper (sorry!) English should actually not be "British - English," since many other English-speaking places also use the proper spelling for the word "colour." Rather, there should be "English" and "USA English." (Not American English, because North North America, and I bet a few folks in South America use "colour.")
I'm just kidding :)
Thanks for the new additions.
For the US / UK war here on "colo(u)r" I'm not quite sure what to do:
I'm German and understand both so I personally I did this without intention and personally don't care.
As the US rules the world (or thinks so), it seems wise to take the US forms. The game is freeware, so I don't depend on sold copies in the UK. :)
But to be serious: If there are more differences between the two languages, I could add a special UK and US translation file.
Though my knowledge is limitited and I would need help of a TRUE Amercian and TRUE British person to translate the game phrases. If it's only this one word, such hassle would be useless!
If someone is willing to help, just drop me a line.
Don't start translating anything, as the texts are hardcoded too.
[italiano] Selezionare profondità di colore
or better, for who doesn't know what is depth of color,
"Please select number of colors: 65000, 16 millions"
"Prego selezionare numero dei colori: 65000 o 16 milioni."
Doing a separate translation for color/colour is overkill. Most software - including blitz - uses the American spelling. If the spelling 'color' annoys you that much, you have issues. :)
P.S. Why are people still posting translations? Doesn't the Babel Fish translator work very well, or something?
[Danish]
"Vælg farvedybde."
farvedybde is 1 word not "Vælg farve dybde."

@big:
I hate these automated translation machines.
Even if they handle a one on one translation,
in most cases the "sense" of the phrase is lost.
@All:
If some of you want to add German translations to their games/apps -> drop me a line.
The Spanish-Catalan one isn't in catalan but weird Spanish. The correct one for that would be (got it from one 'catalan' friend as I really don't know):
[Spanish-Catalan] - "Tria Profunditat de Color"
(and btw, profundidad is commonly used to refer bit depth apart from other non-abstract depths, Yeshu. "Limite de color" sounds really weird)
Thanks Ferminho, will take your translation.
Why are people still posting translations? Doesn't the Babel Fish translator work very well, or something?
That's kind of an understatement. For a quick example of how much it butchers your average translation, try translating something to a different language and back again... Here's your original question translated to Dutch and back to English again:
Why its people who post still translations? Very well the translator of the fish of Babel works, or something?Apart from sounding very unnatural, the second half of the sentence now means the complete opposite of what the original did. Translating things into English with Babelfish isn't so bad, but lets just say that translating into other languages with babelfish ...loses something in the translation.
Babelfish is convenient to make something 'readable' (Even a bad Japanese -> English translation will be easier to understand than the original Japanese, for example), but it is still a
very poor substitute for human translation. Using a babelfish translation in a game more often than not will look very silly to native speakers of a language, and may look like you're not taking them very seriously.
(Particularly interesting example I ran across some time ago: translate 'kids fan club' from English to dutch, and Babelfish suggests 'de club van de jonge geitjesventilator' (which means 'the club of the young little goatventilator')
Yes, a 'kid' is also a baby goat, and yes, a 'fan' is also a ventilator, but
come on! No live person translating would ever make a mistake like that.
Regarding the whole colour/color thing. I think you'll find that the Americans got there language from the British. Therefore the British version is correct.
How they managed to invent words like faucet, diaper and zucchini is completely unbelievable.
Still, colour is colour. 'Color' looks like it should be pronounced 'collor'. Come on you yanks, we gave you a language, at least use it properly ;)
Ok, ok.... British people have won the round... :)
I have a British flag in the game, so I'll take "colours".
And if George B. takes this as an incident to start another war.... shall it be... ;)
xlsior: lol. I see your point. I just thought babel fish would be able to translate a 3-word phrase without butchering it. Apparently not.
lets face it there is no U in color... you don't go rouund saying kuh-lure you say kuh-lor... (ok my phonetics are bad but the truth remains!!!)
"Colour" comes from the french "Couleur"
big10p: babel isn't really butchering. There are just certain word combinations that work fine in English, but those same words taken individually, without a known context, might have a different meaning in another language.
For instance, we know what is meant by 'screen depth' because 'screen' we know refers to the display device we are sat in front of and 'depth' we know means 'the number of bits used to define a pixel'.
Ask anyone to translate 'screen depth' to Spanish, French, German etc. and they will get it wrong unless they know what you are talking about.
To get the desired result, you need to translate the information content of the English phrase 'screen depth'. Remember, language is used to convey information from one person to another in such a way as to preserve the original thought process which the information represents.
You can only translate the information, the actual words are then a secondary effect of that translation.
This is why Japanese-English translation is so difficult. Japanese thought processes are fundamentally different from Western ones. A great deal more emotional and secondary information is conveyed by the words alone when speaking Japanese. Western language communication relies far more on body language and facial expression to acheive the same information content. One result of this is that it is far easier to misunderstand the emotional content of written English, something I'm sure we have all been vicitim of ;)
I still maintain 'colour' is the correct spelling because we were using it hundreds of years before America was even discovered. So there :P
Yeah and, right, Noah Webster was the one who changed it so, like, he's a muppet.
xlsior: lol. I see your point. I just thought babel fish would be able to translate a 3-word phrase without butchering it. Apparently not.
It may. It may not.
The problem is, without understanding the output yourself, you'll never really know for sure.
You will know some weeks later, when user e-mail you.
Not because your game is good, but just to tell that the translation is crap. :)
farvedybde is 1 word
Actually it's not a word at all.

Ahm, I can't speak danish... :/
