Cheers Puki!
One of the striking things is how in some tests it doesn't make much difference what card you have:
In the first UT 2004 test - you have 9 cards within 3fps of each other - my Radeon 9800 pro being one of them.
In the second (and further) UT2004 test they merely increase the resolution of the test - but the settings remain the same.
It shows you can play games at FULL settings if you keep your resolution to a sensible setting. So it helps me summarise that I wouldn't actually gain that much by upgrading my card - UNLESS, I just want to be a screen resolution fanboy.
I notice the same thing with the HL-2 test.
The Doom3 test opens gaping wounds in my ATI card - however, it plays Doom3 at maximum settings on 1,024 x 769 at a respectable frame rate on my machine - so what do I care? The Chronicles of Rid@#!* is a similar story.
They should of also through in the gf7800 gtx just for sh*ts and giggles and see where that held up....probably too new though...
Toms hardware has several charts:
For agp, pcie and so on, and it's updated regularly.
3DMark scores are DX only and should be taken with a pinch of salt. Instead, see how well it fares with one dx game you like in the list, and one opengl game in the list.
I rencently Upgraded from a 5900tx OC to a geforce6800gtoc
minimal speed up in most stuff, cept for anything with ps2.0 support.
for example the TSE demo went from around 40fps average to 136fps average.
But we all knew the FX ps2.0 was pretty shabby...probably like my 6800gt is in ps3.0(tacked on to just have it)..lol
Older FFP apps like TGE and blitz3d had a maybe 10% gain in speed (probably from the extra filrate)
Zmatrix
The last of the old batch is generally better than the first from the new one,
minimal speed up ... went from around 40fps average to 136fps average.
maybe you should check the rest of your system...upgrading to a 6800gt with anything lower than a 2GHz cpu is utterly useless ;)
upgrading from the Geforce 3 to 6600GT gave me a huge boost :). 1024x768 32bit with 2X AA is often over 3x faster than the Geforce 3 at 640x480 16 bit overclocked 10%.
Got about 4x speed increase in our blitz racing game when I swapped the vid cards on my A64 3200+
My 9800 crapped out and my lovely warranty got me a 6800 GT in its place. Woohoo!
But now I'm sure the rest of my pc is one giant bottleneck.
How do I find the biggest bottlenecks? How do you guys do it?
just tell us what you got! :D
no really, its just a matter of experience...
