panno
open my computer, go to
Tools->Folder Options->File Types
locate one of the file extensions that is exhibiting this behaviour and change it to point to the correct program.
Test it then restart your system then open the file as before, if it is still correct then change the others, if not then something is reassociated them automatically.
Nonononono!
I get this, Running the shortcut to FL.exe (which, on my desktop for some reason, links to 4.5.1).
Ive got 5.0 installed, but the system runs the 4.5.1 instead.
What do you do?
1)Copy the file that IS called instead of the correct one, so that there are two copies in the same folder.
2)Remove the original copy, and rename the new one to "OLD_<Whatever>.exe")
Not sure why it happens, but that could fix it :)
In your case Cygnus, delete the FL.exe shortcut, not the FL.exe file. Then make a new shortcut by dragging it from it's folder to the desktop with the right mouse button.
A shortcut is just a shortcut, trash them, remake them, it's all trivial as far as the OS is concerned - but renaming or moving programs can cause problems.
Panno,
Do you think a system restore back to an earlier setting would help?
XP is pretty good at thins thing - making lives a lot less fraught.

OK assuming that Anglish isn't your primary language...
Thats OK my first language is Texan! ;)
Do you mean:
1. When you click on an icon for... as an example... Microsoft Word a different program opens.
OR
2. When you click on an icon in the MY DOCUMENTS folder... as an example... that you expect will open with the program MICROSOFT WORD and a different program opens the file.
If the problem is the first one you have some form of malicious bad evil malware or virus on your computer...
If the program is the second type.
Pu t the mouse pointer ont he program you wish to identify.
click the RIGHT mouse button 1 time
select OPEN WITH from the popup menu
my OPEN WITH in XP has a slide out menu. I choose the option CHOOSE PROGRAM and a coice dialog window appears.
This window lists ALL programs that you have on your computer that can open or hope to open a file...
Near the bottom of that window is a small; square check box with a line of text next to it that says
"ALWAYS USE THIS PROGRAM TO OPEN SELECTED FILE..."
or some such phrase.
select the program you wish to associate with that file type and make sure this box is checked.
click OK
That program will be the default opener for that file type from now on.
{{{{{{{ NOTE }}}}}}}
If you install new software. A word Processor or Paint or Graphics program most of them will let you decide which file types to associate with the program... some will choose this for you.
If you need this in Spanish I can attempt it but there are a few more people out there that are better than I. If youneed it in German??? Possibly Grey Alien??? I am unsure... and other langs... just ask!
:)
ok ok
if i click the xyz icon the programm xyz will start but
also the msiexec.exe start's and call the xxx programm.
this is here with 2 icon's ( or programms )
but booth icon's calls the right exe's AND the msiexec.exe
(filemon from sysinternals.com)
hmm i think there is a virus ...
but my scanner found nothing ..
grrr
@ ipete
yes a good point will check it if i have no other chance
ah and thx for fast answers
Becky, I can say for sure my shortcut linked to the correct file, ;) Windows seems to cache locations for certian program names like FL.EXE
I fixed the issue by reinstalling earlier anyway, Was just a pain because i had a highly modified plugin/audio folder :/
bah w32.stanit !
where can I get the xxx program? hehe
I vote for deleting all the shortcuts on your desktop and making new ones....
