Call of Duty 2

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Call of Duty 2

Has anyone played this? I downloaded the demo, which was very short. It just seemed like more popup Germans. Is there anything new in the sequel?

well to a certain extent as the first one was AMAZING I don;t mind more of the same perhaps a bit different.

To a large degree it's more of the same. More on-screen at once. More prettier on machines capable of it (mine isn't one of them).

Which is fine by me, because I thoroughly enjoyed the first one (and it's expansion pack).

Yep, playing it now. Definately more of the same and I have to run in DX7 mode due to slowdown in just 2 missions (so far).
Some intense firefights, rubbish (IMO) tank battles and just as scripted as the first even with the 'multiple objectives' system.

It's good.

Except when the graphics engine decided to trick me into thinking that I can run it in DX9 mode, and then suddenly caused a serious crash at the start of one single level (a level which doesn't appear to have any real visual differences...).
Fine, run in DX7 then... the game was just too stupid to figure that out for itself as one should expect it to, right? WRONG! Somehow, this graphics engine crash resulted in it losing all of my saved data and configurations. I say losing, because my profile still takes up 47 MB, which one would assume have been created by some sort of really abysmal save system (though my current faith in the game's developers is low enough that I wouldn't find it hard to believe that the profile, for some reason, starts off at some massive size). Really, how the heck could this have happened? The game popped up a blue screen, made a crackly noise, and stopped anything from working until I restarted the computer. How in the blazes did it manage to delete what must have been a lot of data (judging by their massive save files) from a very particular folder for no apparent reason, when it was meant to be CRASHING!

How could it get worse? I decided that I didn't want to bother playing through again (I'd made it to part 1 of the American campaign)... regardless of how great the game is, it annoys me to have to do that. So, I went on a hunt for a cheat code to skip levels. Somehow, for some stupid reason, there isn't one!

Okay, whatever... contact tech support -- They always help, right? Nope! The guy tells me that I should go into MSConfig and uncheck every program that isn't a proper MS program, because one of them could be interfering with the graphics card driver. Obviously, that did not work. Even more obviously, that was an automatically generated message. It was then, of cours,e that I figured out WHY it crashed myself: DX9 Mode and the game being too stupid to tell me not to... or catch the error without killing everything else in the process. So, I add to the thing that that did not solve my problem and that my save files appear to be there but the game does not load them.
Because a response to my problem now would actually require typing instead of just clicking on the auto-message to send me, I have still not recieved a response.

Even with all that, it's still a great game! Very fun, when it doesn't crash :D
It has a few subtle changes from the original game. Namely, the health system which many reviewers for some stupid reason hated even though it's really a great idea...

Quite a bit of scripting, but the AI is marvelous. I played through a few levels more than once, and each time I played was definietly VERY different from the last... even with the scripting. The scripting in the game, sadly, is mostly you walking somewhere, triggering guys to storm a room or such, which makes things too easy at times. But ah well, it's still great fun, and most of the scripted events are well placed.
It's still a shame that I can't throw back grenades that have been tossed at me, now that EVERYBODY ELSE can, and does it all the time!

aren't the people who made this suing someone... or something... or am i just confused again...

It is a great game, and it is much like the original with new bells and whistles. One annoying thing is that it's been XBox'ised. At least I think it has. It's been a while since I played COD, but didn't the original have a proper save system including quicksave and quickload? Well this one doesn't. It just has autosave points and a mission selector. I hate when PC games are tied down to console restrictions, particularly for something as trivial to add as a proper savegame system.

And is it just me, or is there no way to tell how badly injured you are? That's nuts. They don't manage to spoil the game, but those niggly points do annoy me.

Yeah - you can 'tell' how badly injured you are from The Signs:
- heavy breathing
- your vision going red
- lying face down in your own intestines

Rather than picking up arbitrarily located health packs though, you just have to 'take a time out' for a lil while to get yourself together. Which is handy, and a technique I plan to use in everyday life as the need arises.

Seriously though, the manual mentions the handful of indicators that you should have a lie-down and a nice cup of tea. That's all you need to know.

And is it just me, or is there no way to tell how badly injured you are? That's nuts. They don't manage to spoil the game, but those niggly points do annoy me.

It's just you. Why oh why does nobody understand the brilliance of the damage system?!
There IS no health meter, anywhere! If you get badly hurt, you have to run for cover. Basically, this makes for more realisitc behaviour by players... they may not die as easily, but they also don't charge at eachother because they have lots of health. Lots of other reasons, too. Just think about it :)

Kinda contradicting yourself there. Clearly there is no way to tell how badly injured you are unless you're near death's door because I've taken some serious damage without any warnings, palpatations or heavy breathing.

In multiplayer, perhaps, but it has entirely the opposite effect in single player. Players will just find a quiet spot and wait for their health to improve before going into the next firefight, and thanks to the heavily scripted levels, there are many such points.

Here we have a game which doesn't know what it wants to be. Having a health bar is unrealistic? So they remove it. I'm fine with that, but as I suspected, they've replaced it with a "hide in the corner and your health automagically regenerates" cop out. I can just about put up with that in Halo where you're wearing a fancy schmancy suit, but unless you're Captain America, bullet wounds don't just heal up in 20 seconds of hiding in a dark alley.

I Liked operation flashpoint best of all these war games. Wish they would do a new one with all the graphical bells and whistles.

Weren't they supposed to be making an operation flashpoint 2, like 5 years ago?

I kind of agree with you on the health thing. I like the lack of health bar, but being able to fix myself immediately after every decent firefight (or even during, if I can find a nice shady spot under a tree) feels a bit like the sort of Quick Save/Quick Load copout FPS's have been victim to since... well.. did Wolfenstein have Quick Saves? A long time, anyway...

At least with a health bar, when it was low, I was very careful about where I ran to and when I stuck my head above cover.

That being said, it's still fun, and I'm glad I bought it.

I believe Bohemia Interactive have split from Codemasters but are doing an OPF 1.5 (an updated version of the first game) and OPF 2.0 but there will have to be a name change. Due mid/late 2006.

Aye, fair point, Quick Save and Quick Load can be abused in the same way as the wait and hide thingy. I do think quick save and quick load have a legitimate purpose too though.

I need quick save and quick load. When you get married and time isn't always your own. It really sucks when you need to pop out all day long and can't just load up from where you left off

> I need quick save and quick load. When you get married and time isn't always your own.

Ditto here, with Kids thrown into the mix as well.

I'm glad there's no quick save.
My save folder already takes up 80 MB for some insane reason (obviously pointing, ultimately, to stupidity). The game would probably take up all the hard drive space I have left if it had quick-save.

I finished it this morning and think I preferred the COD1.
Too much street-fighting, running from building to building, clearing houses/rooms/bunkers/road-blocks etc. Throw smoke, throw grenade, launch yourself forwards then repeat.
There are some BIG scale firefights but the 'last stand' scenarios got a bit tiresome.
Didn't find anything as involving as the big 'sets' in COD1.

i just tried out the demo... seems a lil more intense than cod1... lots more action... more screaming when guys are shot (i like dat :) )...

the engines seems smoother as well... never seemed to slow down for me...

i think this one may be worth playing all the way through...

i'm gonna add this... as i just had some free time to finish the demo...

this was fun... i enjoyed the team aspect that seems more 'present' than in 1... they waited for me at the rally point, at the end of the demo, and were cheering each other on... and me too... a real nice touch...

also... the health bar thing, you get warned when you are in danger of dying... who needs to know how much health you have left on a meter... the way it is now is ok as far as i'm concerned...

the graphics... nothing outrageous as far as exotic dx9 stuff is concerned... but it looked pretty good... nicely lightmapped... yeah, i sorta felt like i was actually there, in combat...

everything ran smoothly on a celeron 1.7 with a radeon 9200 in the mode the game chose as best for my setup... 8 x 6...

i stepped it up to 1024 x 768 and added a few things... no slowdowns noted...

so far... i like it...

I think you gotta have quicksaves and if you want a challenge or enjoy just gun toting don't use them much, some games I don't mind dying and shooting them all again with a little foreknowledge. Others times quicksave is vital to avoid the tedium of repeating crap you did fine last time only to die again, esp. if you are a busy person and have to crap in your gaming.

I've just been playing it some more to confirm, but the auto-saves are so frequent that there's barely enough time between them to warrant a quicksave anyway. You never really have to replay more than a minute's worth of game when you die anyway, so I'm not feeling that a quicksave would add anything.

As someone that's never been a great fan of the "Quicksave Technique", it's probably erring a little too far the other way with the frequency of auto-saves.

But it's a minor niggle.
