Hey!! What Was Wrong With Quake4...
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Hey!! What Was Wrong With Quake4...
i just got it and took some time to play a lil bit of it the other day...
it's not that bad... come on now...
it definitely IS Quake... it goes back to the old storyline type of thing with updated graphics...
i like the team aspect, and there are parts where you do actually have to do a lil puzzle solving... drive around a maglev transport...
and the weapons are actually quite satisfying...
i'm just past the Aqueduct now... and so far, it's keeping my interest... a lil more so than DOOM3 did...
oh yeah, one thing i'd like to see gone from this... the unnecessary cursing by some of the characters... i know the game is rated 17+ and all, and that harsh language is commonplace nowadays... but somehow, thisstruck me as a bad thing...
but overall... it's Quake... a better Quake... i'm havin' a lil fun with it...

Quake 4 is pretty old school FPS gameplay wise. I think thats what I don't like about it above all. It just hasn't gotten past the simplistic point and shoot games that all doom, quake and unreal tournament games were.
The graphics feel kind of old too somehow, despite the tech, and even on a fairly high spec system with the texture quality turned up, the textures tend to look low res. typical of games done with ID's new engine.
If you like old school FPS with narrow gameplay and simplistic AI, I imagine you will really like quake 4.
I started playing Far Cry again with HDR turned on, and it's a much better game now that I have a modern vid card and it all runs smooth. Quake 4 just feels like quake 2 to me, I got bored about 4 corridors into the game and a couple of hours later decided to play something else.
Oh, I also find heavy swearing in games offensive and Inappropriate unless used in moderation to emphasis a point. I always remember the old starwars arcade machine where you first see the deathstar someone shouts "look at the size of that thing!!!!" Still seems cool somehow today, and in my opinion more fun than a WTF! or whatever they might use today for the same effect.
I think the real problem with Quake 4 is that there are just too many mediocre FPS games, and people expect more than the same game with fancier graphics.
I much prefer Far Cry, Rid@#!*, and Fear to the othe SP FPS game that have come out in the last couple of years. Even HL2 was only so and so despite the heavy use of physics.
It was better than Doom III, that's for sure. I thought the bosses were pretty sorry, though. The final boss took all of about a minute to kill.
I liked how you usually had other marines to assist you, that was cool. Many more enemies appeared on the screen at once than did in Doom III, which I also liked.
Overall it was way too easy, but it didn't hold my interest long enough to go through again on the hard difficulty. My main gripe is that the levels seemed to take forever to load. I didn't think my PC was that out of date...
@#!* @#!* @#!* @#!*
Why on earth is the short version of Richard spelt with a D censored!!!
Can't even type Rid@#!* lol.
Quake 4 is brilliant.
Anyone else who says otherwise sucks.
Soo....what exactly do they suck....?
Rid@#!* was a really good FPS.
The multiplayer was rubbish, would've been good if it have vehicles and guns like single player had.
Single player was rubbish too. It's not that there are huge gaping flaws, it;s just that there's no single element which stands out. If it had come out a year ago, it might have seemed more appealing, but right now it's up against the likes of Call of Duty 2 and F.E.A.R, both of which blow it away in every department. It is better than Doom 3, but honestly, what isn't? I'm really pleased I bought F.E.A.R. and waited until I'd played Quake 4 before deciding whether or not to buy that too, because after half an hour, I'd had enough. I played a lot more than half an hour, but after half an hour, I'd seen enough.
I have never even bothered to look at Quake 4. The problem with ID games is the simplistic game design they employ time and time again, to the point where I no longer even bother with them as they're just too uncreative as game authors to be worth keeping an eye on.
The gameplay purpose of ID games is to identify the key weapon/armour spawns on the map and control them by running around in a preset pattern picking them up and blowing up anyone who wasn't lucky enough to get to the spawn point on time.
The games therefor favour the player who takes the early lead (by knowing the map better) and - because the power ups are too imbalanced - makes it impossible to reverse a result that's looking bad.
I dont consider ID game authors, they should stick to engines and let creative people to the games. There was nothing wrong with Medal of Honour as a game, but Quake and Doom are just Pacman with guns.
They use "bad language" in Quake 4? That is a new one. I ought to try it out.
I dont consider ID game authors,
hahahahahaaaaaaaaaa..... ahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
ooooooooo wa hahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaahahahah....
ahhhhhhhhh, ok... ok... i'm alright now... oh, that was a good one...
lets see... Becky-0 world class games to her credit... id-at least one... ahahahahahahaaaa... no, no... i must behave myself...
c'mon Becks... what is it today... you're battin zero here...
i can understand you not liking the game... a lot of good reasons above are held by those who didn't like it... for one reason or another...
...but to lambast these guys at id, and to suggest that they are not gamemakers... wooooo hooooahahaha, oh Becks... me thinks you going a lil bit tooooooo far.
hey... they are the ones who put the first person into FPS... they single handedly created a genre... and, even though the game may not be enough to keep your interest... did ya looked around at the levels... the graphics... the lighting...
the character animation...
sorry... i gotta realy disagree with you on this one... they are great game makers... you can only hope to approach their level of achievement in your lifetime...
... in anything.
and besides... me thinks that someone else actually created this game...
---Mike
Raven developed Quake 4, not ID
Owned.
hey... i just got captured by the stroggg... oh no.... oh my god... what are they doing to meeeee......
arrrrrrgrrgrgrggggGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!
comeon you guys/gals... this is great stuff...
that blue level was cool... the fans, shadows, the mist coming down the fan vents...
me havin' big fun... me now strogggGGGG!!!!
--Mike
yeah, I kind of see where becky is coming from though. If you took away the new technology from Doom, you don't really have anythiung innovative. What blew people away initialy with doom was 3D. Compared to other vector 3D games like Elite, starglider, mercenary, frontier etc. Doom looked almost real. The gameplay was nothing terribly exciting, kind of like operation flashpoint in 3D compared to the better modern FPS's.
I don't think ID ever made a truly great game that oozed gameplay, but did do a hell of a lot to further the technology.
In my opinion not many games from 10 years ago can hold up to their modern equivalents. People are used to more sophisticated games, kind of like colour films v's early black and whit films.
Remember all the overacting and shouting so that the actors could be heard by the mic :)
Anyway, not sure what I'm trying to say anymore, except that ID games were always about technology and not so much gameplay. Now that technology that involves gameplay like AI and physics are catching up with visual tech ID are falling on the wayside.
Is Quake for all dark and crap like Doom3 or can you actually see some graphics?
Raven made Hexen all those years ago I think, it was a great game.
its pretty dark, but you can improve it significantly by adjusting the gamma in the console a little. No where near as bad as Doom 3 in the darkness factor, and a lot less predictable than the opening closet behind you triggers in Doom 3 either.
Doom3 seemed like a better game on Xbox than on the PC. I noticed that they upped the ambient light in the Xbox version too :)
Thanks EVAK. I've played almost *all* FPSs since Doom (well Wolfenstein actually) and so I'm interested in Quake4. My favourite parts in Doom3 were well lit or the mars outdoors bits.
For me, FPS games are more about the environment. If you feel like you are really there, it doesn't really matter if the gameplay is repetetive. I just want to walk around in a submersize world, and blow stuff up. Unfortunately, a lot of FPS games have added a lot of cut scenes or scripted sequences, which really breaks the atmosphere for me. The reason I like Half-Life 1 was I could pick up anywhere I left off, and was somewhere in this endless government complex. The gameplay didn't get interrupted much with special tasks or people to talk to.
I really like Doom 3, because it is very scary, and environment is very submersive. Quake 4 doesn't interest me much, I guess because id didn't make it themselves, and the AI team looks bad. Also, there is no demo.
Why doesn't anyone make teamplay multiplayer, where you both go through the singleplayer levels and kill enemies? I loved playing that mode in Duke Nukem.
The cutscenes in Chronicles of Ridknob were great and I felt they were smooth and added to it, plus of course you can skip the buggers unlike in FinalFantasy X ARG!!
no GA... it's not like D3 in that aspect... plenty of lighted up levels and areas... outdoor... sky... etc...
Evak is trying to pull a jedi mind number on you...

E... yeah, i can see where she is coming from... but it's where she went with it that i'm having trouble with...
first off, she said this...
I dont consider ID game authors, they should stick to engines and let creative people to the games.
... which leads me to think that she's a lil confused... Quake4 wasn't made by id... as someone also pointed out to her...
also, id's creation, DOOM, was a genre setting, revolutionary game... lots of fun... it put the world of gameplay on its behind...
now what do ya want... even after the big bang, an atom bomb looks like a firecracker... but it'll still blow your arse away...
--Mike
For me, FPS games are more about the environment. If you feel like you are really there,
verrrrrrry well put josh...
--Mike
Q4 owns, anyone who disagrees, sucks.
Q4 owns, anyone who disagrees, sucks.
verrrrrrry well put fish...
:)
hey... my kid didn't think much of it either... that's how come i got it so soon :)
--Mike
I've never caught the FPS bug - apart from Wolfenstein and the original Doom, and that was only because of the novelty at the time. However, there's one FPS I've played from start to finish and thoroughly enjoyed: Metroid Prime. Maybe you guys don't count that as a proper FPS, I dunno, but I liked it. :)
like Josh mentioned... a lot of it for me is the immersive atmosphere...
i'm a big VR devotee... man, could you imagine if this was played in VR gear... vision and stereo headset with glove gun...
look around the Quake levels... especially the 'blue' one (strogg medical facilities) at the rotating fans in the ceiling... the mist coming down... the shadows... the metallic reflective surfaces...
in Medal of Honor i went around the levels visiting all the houses i could get in... went to the rooms, sat in the chairs, closed the doors...
they even had the toilet facilities all modeled... no flushing toilets or running water though :)
--Mike
all the Dooms were crap games
Quakes have decent multiplayer or did till quake 4
Thats all there is to it.
The problem is, that Carmack and the ID guys think that graphics are all that matter. And it is all that matters to SOME PEOPLE. It is those of use that want good gameplay that they ignore.
I'm into graphics and physics aided gameplay. Like the prospect that games might not need a heath bar because seeing your foe change over time might do the same.
But thats nothing new. Many old games had the bosses that turn red as you fight them.
Ghost and Goblins has your clothing fall off as you get hurt.
You couldn't do that in the early stages of games.
But what the guys at ID seem to think, and this goes for the guys at Raven, who haven't made a good game since ever.. or possibly hexxen. They all seem to think that the old gameplay models stand the test of time.
They don't, the just feel derivative and shallow.
What I really liked about Half-life 2 is not the graphics, or even the physics themself. It is how they used it. TO create a world where what you had to do made sense, and things that seem like they should work, work.
Sure it wasn't perfect, but it was better.
Here is the problem for me... Doom 3 is fine, but it is the same as doom.. the gameplay is exactly the same. So I might as well play doom, it would cost less, require less, and load faster. SO doom 3 looks better, who cares?
I'm tired of it.
And The last good multiplayer FPS was Redfaction. And before that? Counterstrike. Before that?
I agree with becky. Id doesn't make games. They make game engines. And that is how they should be treated.
They release games to raise money to make more engines. Not to make good games.
again...
id didn't make Quake4...
so you are right... and Becky probably didn't even realize what she was saying was right...
--Mike
id didn't make Quake4...
They didn't make Quake 4 alone, but they were much more involved in this game than they were with previous games that Raven have made with one of their engines. This has all the hallmarks of an ID game, so whether or ID did it or Raven just copied it from them, this is still - to all intents and purposes - an ID game. Raven are capable of much better than this. Both the Elite Force games and both the Soldier of Fortune games were far better than this, even for someone like me who can't stand Star Trek.
"all the Dooms were crap games" lol, um ... well.
so... i guess that Medal of Honor was done by id too then...
and when you license the DOOM3 engine, and make Gabriel4-The Dark Side with it... i guess people can say that it too was done by id... and has all the hallmarks (nice word by the way) of an id game as well...
they'll say that you really didn't do nuthin... it was all id...
and all you guys/gals out there making games with Blitz3D...well, people are just gonna say that it's a Blitz game... and has all the hallmarks of a Sibly production... you'll get no credit for it as well...
tell me Gabe... do you ever listen to yourself as you say some of these things... :P
--Mike
Jeez Red...
what...
whatttt....
:)
--Mike
Ignoring Red just for the minute (ah ... it's like meditating on a beautiful beach) I downloaded the Classic Doom for Doom3 mod and it's really rather good! Google it and play it now dudes (it's not a big download). Doom3 must be updated to V1.3 first.
don't ignore the truth... ahhh, alright, it's GreyAlien... it's ok... he can't deal with the truth... or reality... or things like dat...
go ahead GA... back to your meditating... are you sufficiently sedated...
--Mike
Actually I've just been playing Classic Doom on Doom3 yay! Pretty unchilled really.
let's wait and see who's gonna use the doom3 engine. remember quake 2 and unreal was used for many nice games by third parties.
Q4 is brilliant from a technical point of view. But the outdoor scenes are still poor. I can make a skybox too. Even in BLitz I can do much better outdoor scenes, simply check the gallery and you'll agree. THe reason why is Q4 seems to use some kind of CPU intensive Shadows and FX that forces limited enviroments. One day, with gigaflops household-pcs this won't be a limit any longer. But currently that's the way it is, since Carmack has choosen some slow and comlicated algos.
Becky-0 world class games to her credit
/cough. You know absolutely nothing about my past work because i've never said anything. I've been in this game the best part of 3 decades, so whether your statement is true or false the fact is it is supposition. Mr I lack the ingenuity to think of a game so i'll rip off a film.
As for the ID/Raven thing. Quake is a franchise. It wouldn't matter if I wrote it, Quake is Quake. If they had changed the formula I would expect it to be called Doom, or Hexen, or Medal of Honour.
Quake meens deathmatches, Quake deathmatches meens imblanaced power ups and imbalanced power ups meens controlling the map wins. It's like RTS games in that the winner is the first to gain control - everything after the first power up rush and frag is just the result being played out. It's pacman with guns.
Maybe you enjoy that, but I dont, so I ignore anything with the big word "Quake" on the box. I still enjoy other games in the Quake engine, it's a good engine, I just never liked Pacman and guns havn't changed that.

one BIG skybox with a gun in front, great :)
That backdrop was one of the first things that put me off of Quake 4. It looks really cheap and doesn't fit in well with the foreground scenery.
..well..quake is something whats shaking a lot?? Or I'm miss something :))
sobriety, I expect :)
:))
tell me Gabe... do you ever listen to yourself as you say some of these things... :P
Good question, I'd like to know the same thing.
Good story, believable environments, enemies that don't just walk in a straight line and shoot at you until you kill them.
Other than that, Quake4 has it all.
I really, really like Quake4.
I know for a fact that a lot of people here with opinions haven't played it... cos they let slip "there's no demo!"
Which tells me how much...
.... THEY SUCK :)
I did not not play Quake 4 because Quake 4 did not have a demo, I did not play Quake 4 because Quake 4 is Quake :)
Actually, Quake4 is Unreal 2.
actually, Quake4 is quake I mention in previous post..:)
(I'm still not sure what does it mean) :))
By the way, Quake 4 does have a demo. It really did suck on the 360, but I actually liked it on the PC.
This is a 10 month old thread. You do know that don't you?
Just had a look and you are new to the forum. Welcome aboard. :)
Always check how old the thread is and don't resurrect them unless you really have something good to say or contribute.
Now, I will let this slip. Next time though, I will issue a fine.
Ignore Amon,
As long as you dont resurrect an old thread to say "Look how old this thread is", you are perfectly at liberty to post what you want. In fact half the time people should use the old threads rather than make a new one.
dont resurrect an old thread to say "Look how old this thread is",
Heh heh. I must try that some time.
I apologize. I didn't check the date on it. By the way, hello guys. You're correct, I am new here. I've been using BlitzBasic for a while now, but my parents just bought me Blitz3D for my birthday so I could finally join the Blitz forums and move on from my 2d programming hobby to 3d. I'll introduce myself in a more appropriate topic sometime so you'll have a little backgound information on where I stand so far. I sure could use some advice on a few things, so you'll probably be hearing a little from me.
Thanks,
Joe
