Just got this book...

I might get that. I know next to nothing about the history of Commodore though, unlike Nintendo or id, two other businesses that had interesting books written about them recently that I read.

It hardly surprising as Commodore has pretty much been written out of mainstream history.

There simply isn't enough room for both Microsoft, Apple, IBM and Commodore in the history books, and since Commodore only made childrens toys(gamescomputers) and Apple, IBM and Microsoft were making serious business computers and software, the choice is really simple.

I went ot Barnes and Noble today but they didn't have the book, or even any record of a book by that title. I didn't have the ISBN number for them to check, but it should have come up on a title search I would think.
They obviously don't care for your business then =]
Hey what the hell, that link lists the title as merely "The spectacular rise and fall of commodore", whereas the title on the book itself from the other page clearly starts with "ON THE EDGE" in big letters.
That's probably why they couldn't find it!
Yep, the full title is 'On The Edge: The spectacular rise and fall of Commodore', but that wouldn't fit in the subject line when I posted the subject.
Why not just buy it from the website instead of buying from Amazon or B&N?

I'm understanding your difficulty though: I've been searching through some of the bigger Australian book sites with the ISBN number and/or various keywords from the title and/or the author, and I can't find any acknowledgement the book even exists... as far as they're concerned, anyway.
Still, one can always get it from that site (

Because if B&N had had it I would have had it in my hands today, whereas if I buy it from a website I might have to wait 5-10 days. :-)

That c64hq.com link has chapter 1 which is a fascinating read about the original design of the MOS 6502 chip.
The bit about engineers crawling around tables in socks cutting out the 6 giant masks that would make up the microprocessor makes my memories of programming that chip seem even more special.
Just wanted to bump this, as this is really a must have for Commodore afficionados and people who wants to get 'behind the scenes' of the early microcomputers... Back when a computerstore had many different types of computers, not just the same boxes with different names on them.
EDIT: And the book is a great read! From the Commodore strengths like recruitment and in-house chip-fab, to the failures like 'Computers designed by the marketing-department' and the usual greed and envy!

It's called Masters of Doom and is a truly excellent read - so much in-fighting, bitching, back-stabbing and anger, yet such great games...
I've read that book about 10 times, each time as enjoyable as the last.
