Anyone play EVE Online?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Anyone play EVE Online?

Hi, does anyone here play EVE? I'm looking for an online game that will be able to keep my attention for long, which means i wouldnt want action to be repetitive. So i need to ask someone who's played it, does it get repetitive and what does the game boil down to? I can't find these answers in online reviews and it's very hard to guess.

I get bored with games too quickly for my own good.

Not in ages. EVE is super boring. The game boils down to watching the screen for 12 hours a day while doing something else. Actually, I lie. Some of the game is about logging on your account every three days to change whatever skill your character is practicing, then logging right back out again.

I reckomend City of Heroes and / or City of Villains.

.

The ones I've enjoyed the most where City of Heroes and ToonTown online. The worst where Starwars Galaxies and Endless Ages.

You should play some good games online, check out MAME, Kawaks, Gens and SNES9X netplay. Now that is 'proper' online gaming.

Thanks for the comments. I thought it would boil down to that. I took more time to read about it and it looks like apart from being repetitive (like all action MMOGS nowdays), it only becomes fun after you learn how to play it and that may take at least a few months. To know all the systems, ships, tricks, etc. I'm not up for that. I guess a nice slowpaced (and 3D) multiplayer strategy/management game is what im after.

I've watched a friend play it numerous times and it all seems a bit passive to watch, like he's observing the gameplay rather than interacting with it. Maybe he just isn't very good...

I played it for a week and then I got bored.
You set a waypoint, and just watch the screen for hours while you fly to your destinations.
If that isn't lack of gameplay, I don't know what is :)

I agree with Flameduck completely. It totally boils down to watching the screen and feeling completely detatched.

Mmmm.. I have an active account, but never really play it anymore. The thing about Eve is that yoo are free to do whatever yoo like. If yoo want to be a bad ass ganker, then off yoo go and do it, if yoo want to be a carebear, then off yoo go.

But....

There is only so much that yoo can do on your own or in a small corporation, to get the most out of it yoo really have to join an Uber Corporation and set out into 0.0 sec space where the Ganking Lordz of L337 live and die on a daily basis.

I have played Eve off and on since Day 1 and have a very High level (read, well qualified and mega rich toon) but really, once yoo have got that rich, with the big ship and the shiny tings, there really is'nt any insentive to keep playing as it;s all more of the same, mine, gank, rinse and repeat.

I will not be renewing my subscription in February as I can get more fun and depth out of X2 the Threat than Eve and I don't have to put up with pwned, retarded, prepubesiant idiots that scream abuse at yoo when yoo Pod them for being a tit. :)

This is only My personal opinion, I daresay there are peeps who having played it have found their Nirvana. :)

My bro played it for a few months, everytime I saw him, he was either docked in a station, heading from point A to point B, or mining minerals while sitting back watching it all happen.....he quite a bit ago, and has been hooked on World of Warcraft since, which looks to be quite the nice game, alot more interactive then the online stuff I'm playing right now.

Havent played many online MMOs myself, tried a trial of Ultima Online, couldnt get to grasp with how awful the game looked in this day & age (which looked even more horrible in its "3d" mode), got bored after taming 5 cats while running around aimlessly killing stuff, and cursing at the fact all my player movement requires to be verified by the server, which never works well with a bad dial-up ping-rate. Bought Everquest few years back, but never got a chance to play it, I blame it on the 400mb update I had to do on my 26.4kb modem back in that day (38 hours of downloadin an update with that bitrate)

All I play is Final Fantasy XI these days, been doin so for nearly 2 years, I cant really recommend it as it's based upon the use of massive XP grinds which boil down to hitting the few same macros over and over again which as you can likely tell gets repetitive, especially in a non-social party, but then after that all the fun stuff comes when you cap out your level, then start taking part in the end-game activities, which there currently is a crapload of battlefields, bosses & gods to fight.
(my main gripe is that the game isn't very interactable, how many times I wish my character could lay down in a bed, or sit in a chair, subtle things like that)

Guild Wars is quite nice given the price and no monthly fee, but it mainly boils down to doing quests (which soon begin to repeat over hours of play) & missions until you beat them, then from there it is just PvP until the next content/expansion pack comes out.
(major drawback I see is that alot of morons play the game, alot of players dont understand the concepts of balanced teams and teamwork itself)

Plan to head into World of Warcraft here if Final Fantasy XI's next expansion pack (due out soon) doesnt accomplish what I want it to do so (actual solo-content, more end-game events, balance gameplay issues, etc).
(by that time World of Warcraft should finally have its first expansion with some real end-game content in it, from its current look, once you hit its cap {60}, there's not really much to do)

Was a Beta Tester... was bored... MMORPGs in general seem a bit limited in many aspects... either it is a complete useless quest and get Creds... OR the re is NO direction and that seems more pointless...

Did some research in the quest programming tree. The problem is diagramming at the ends... There is simply no way to create a more dynamic experience unless you had more saved on the Persons PC...

I was in the EVE beta, and it didn't grab me, but I just suddenly decided to get back into it again last weekend with a couple of friends, and I'm really enjoying it.

The gameplay can be repetitive, yes, but it has a couple of things going for it:

1) The game runs in a window. So, if I'm on a long journey, or doing some tedious mining, I can just listen out for any alerts and get some work done.

2) The player interaction. Eve is capable of some pretty neat things. If you start a corporation (ie guild) you can get pretty deep into managing things. And, of course, there's plenty of opportunities for someone to infiltrate your corp. There was the recent-ish news story of someone becoming the right-hand man of another character who was the head of a corp. This person had been given quite high access to the corp, and in the end they made off with a large amount of the corp's financial assets, resulting in the other players putting a bounty on their head. None of that stuff is against the terms of service, it's part of the gameplay. Kinda adds an edge, I think.

3) It fulfils my own personal need for a replacement Elite like nothing else has. Even though Elite was pretty repetitive, I still enjoyed it (as did practically everyone who saw it).

To me, it's the most enjoyable MMO I've played yet, although I still miss Dark Age of Camelot, mainly because my girlfriend played it too! :D

I have to admit i'm still thinking. I like slow paced games where you can leave for a period and come back and not miss much. Seems there are strategy elements in it too. I might sign up for one month. Hope i dont cos i'll waste so much time :(

Earth Angel should give Ultima Online a try... I found the same problms with every other MMORPG as well.. And I couldn't even find Anarchy Online to be worth it. But Ultima online can be played, (and with as much or more fun I might add) without ever picking up a fighting impliment or fighting anything.

You could bake, or fish, or carve wood, or chop trees, mine ore, make armor and weapons, make furniture, beg, or otherwise make lots of money without ever fighting. And when you get super rich, you buy a house, and start decorating it with stuff you make, selling stuff with hired venders, and modding the shape of your house ala the sims.

Out of all the MMORPGs... it is still the best... which is sad... because all the others want to be like EQ, which was a piece of flaming crap.

That goes for anyone else who doesn't like the MMORPGs... give UO a try... I believe they still give out free trials on some free servers... you'll love it...

very smart decision :)
I "was" a WoW addict.. still suffering withdrawal sympthoms :)

Ok so i got a trial account. Its my 3rd day in EVE. Well i can say it looks pretty good and addictive. The good part is you can do other things while you play the game and pay only small attention to it when needed, such as while mining, or traveling. The bad side is you have to wait for skills. Now i have nothing to do, i just have to wait, but I guess that's what makes the game profitable as subscriptions are monthly. There's also a chance i get bored once i learn the game mechanics, but thing is you have more to learn about in this game than in most rpgs, which i think i like (sadly).

I think i'll give it a go for 1 month. I might do some coding while playing (supreme nerdity isnt it).

Glad the buddy key works Lenn :)

While yoo are waiting on skill ups, do some aghent missions and mining. Money is the big thing in EVE and Lots of it, so rack up the ISK's and save up for the higher level skills and ships that yoo will need to survive.

Whats yer Characters name on EvE? let me know and If I can I will pop on and say hello.

Hey Gerion!

Thanks again. My ingame name is J u n s_u_i without spaces and _ (yes i want to hide my virtual identity!). I've joined a corp and as you said i'm mining and doing agent missions. The game would be dead boring if there wasnt auto pilot. With it, i can do other stuff while the ship flies itself, except, as i learned, in low sec space where i nearly got killed once (my ship was destroyed hehe).

Its flipping crazy that you have to wait for at least a year to get a good character. I mean that costs $180 ... so i might yet consider how long i'll be playing, but so far so good.

WoW baby, I just can't shake it...

I shook mine and it went orf..... sigh :)

Lenn, I will look for yoo online and send yoo a Galactagram from Jevhaddah.

Cheers
