Last time I heard anything about it (Not that recently): Doom3 engine.
me too (as in I heard the same)
Quake 4 is based on the Doom 3 engine. Hence the distinctive shadows and normal mapping.
[Slightly off topic]
Observe this pattern:
Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of destiny, Return to castle wolfenstein
Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3
Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3
If you ask me, Quake 4 doesn't belong in there. It breaks the pattern.
(Not counting the other less known games, and the slightly more known games in 2D)
Yep, Doom3 was developed with Quake 4 in mind - ID and Raven worked together on the development of Quake 4 whilst continuing Doom 3. Raven were pretty much able to exploit the features of the engine however they wanted - Doom3 is not the be-all and end-all of the engine's capability.
Well, I would do it this way:
Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny
Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3
Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3,
Return to castle Wolfenstein, Quake 4 - they were developed by other companies....
Did you count previous games?
Dangerous Dave, Commander Keen, Catacombs???? There's not pattern!
The only patter I can sence is that id made good games before Quake II! ;-)
> is Quake4 based on the DOOM3 engine,
If it's just as tediously boring then I'd say yes!
Quake 4 is using the Doom 3 engine and is a sequal to Quake 2, not Quake 3.

Touche!
And yes, Quake 4 is a slightly tarted up DOOM3 engine and the game is marginally more fun, but still just as tedious. And from what I understand, this one isn't sponsored by Maglite.
Quake 4 is using the Doom 3 engine and is a sequal to Quake 2, not Quake 3.
Quake 3 had absolutely no purpose or storyline apart from kill a few bots in different levels. I never have played the Full Version of Quake 2, I played and modded the demo tons, even joined a clan with my demo version.
As i predicted a long time ago (:P) Quake 4 is based on Doom3 and this is the reason why the outdoor scenes are real alibi maps, small areas with skycubes, pretty much like "Moorhuhn", if you know what I mean. There's one good thing about Quake4, now you can use them both simultanously, a gun and the maglite (where in doom 3 you only had the choice of one of them). Other than that, the story seems to be pretty disappointing. In the middle of the game they make you a Borg. A great idea for an unexpected turn, but they waste it and the story continues like before: kill em all.
When do they begin to understand that the story is the most important part?
Q4 is a wicked game.
