Having a hard time finding WW2 buildings

Been looking all over for some pics of WW2 buildings. Stuff like aircraft plants, ball bearing factories, oil refineries, and basic airfield buildings. Can't believe Google is letting me down. :(

www.wikipedia.org might have some, but I dunno what you would search for. The odd picture under WW2 might have a good shot of a building, or such.

I'm not sure where in the world you come from but, if your in Europe, walk around a few older towns with a camera.

Most of the buildings of that "Style" are still standing. i.e. More red brick factories in my home town than you can shake a stick at, most of the buildings in the town center are more than 100 years old etc.

Hiya GA...nice to meet you. I live in the U.S. btw. Been a blitz coder for many years but haven't seen you around here yet. So just wanted to say welcome.

Nah, I'm definitely not into lining someones pocket for mediocre models I can knock up myself. :P

Just had some initial trouble locating some good photos to base my models off.

Try image googling "old europe buildings" or "world war two buildings" or something....

You might have some luck searching for pictures of "old factories" and stuff like that, as buildings tend to transpire more than 1 era - there's not really such a thing as a "ww2 building".

Most WW2 airfields in Britain, especially South East England, where only really semi-permanent structures, a few wooden huts in a field with the odd dug out to hide in whilst the Luftwaffe did fly bys. Your best bet to get imagery of them is probably to watch some war films, rather than seek out photographs.

For British houses look for "Victorian house" or something like that, I dont think traditional French architecture has changed much so rural French buildings would probably suffice for imagery there. I'm not sure about German architectural styles though.

I agree this is very difficult, especially if you live in an area where nothing is more than 100 years old. The Europeans don't understand...they have this stuff in their backyard, but you have never seen it in your life.


Watch some Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan. I don't like pulling inspiration from existing games, but Call of Duty and MOHAA have some good environments.

Anyways, I have used often HO (1/87) scale raildroad pages and magazines (and other modeling magazines) as a source for industrial buildings, and airfield stuff too can be found although it is tougher - especially german airfield stuff is almost impossible to find... here's few links for my own search adventures:

...And so. It's all about the words you use for searches, net is full of information but sometimes you have to use other than "the obvious" words to find them.

Also few books from your local library would help, even if you don't go as far as I have gone - I have several books about airfield architecture and equipment, and have bought few plastic models too for reference. And yes, I strongly deny that I have anything wwII related modeling going on if you ask :P

I can post few pics and a link to a free aircraft hangar and simple modular barracks I made year ago for my own purposes (supplied untextured & unmapped, but hey, they are free if anyone wants them).

Yeah I'm defintely going to check out the base library at lunchtime. I'm guessing they're gonna have everything I need.

Btw, Halo I bought an app from you about oh 3 years ago. It was the one that created animated particle effects strips. Any chance you still have that around and can email it to me at chroma_72@... . I've bought a new computer since then and I'm not quite sure what happened to that app. :(

I vaguely remember that program, but can't find it anywhere on my hard drive.

I've been looking at using Particle Illusions for my game but I think I'll take a stab at it myself first. It's starting to come back to me a bit.
