Advice on adsl

Looking for a good (preferably unmetered) adsl package for a member of my family.

She wants to be able to pay as little as possible. Ideally not much more than £10 a month... 512kbps-2mbps is fine, we don't need silly speeds. Do need a very generous bandwidth allowance though.

Who can you recommend for the north london area?

I've just done a major google search and the only broadband services that charge £10 are those that offer a £10 connection, capped to 3GB and only for the first 3 months.

Unmetered access at 512kb starts from £14.99 to £19.99 a month and theres a lot of them to.

You might find a cheapo service out there somewhere but I don't know wether it will be reliable or not.

Just be very careful not to get tied in to a 12 month (or 6 years!) contract.

One ADSL provider gives you a free modem, but if you leave within 6 years you have to pay for it.

£10/mo + unlimited downloads may be possible, but I would anticipate poor customer service, difficulty connecting, £0.50p/min tech support, frequent downtime, congested network.

My advice, get a 256kbps connection from Zen Internet. Might not be cheap, but you will

1) Never have a connection problem.
2) Probably never need to call custome services (unless you forget your password).
3) Have no download limit, ever.

I use tiscali, uncapped 512 for £14.99 per month. 12 month contract though.

I use Wanadoo 1Mbit (soon to be 2Mb for same price) and they are fine. In theory they have a cap but it isn't force, a (naughty) friend of mine leaves his on 24 hours a day downloading stuff. He has downloaded nearly 700GB of data and never been challenged once!

I thought you were charged for every GB you go over?

Wanadoo don't charge you for going over your limit straight away. They'll contact you to warn you that if you consistently go over you'll have to upgrade your account. I think Grey Alien's friend has just been lucky because there are several people on the Wanadoo forums that have received warning letters.

[edit] BTW, Wanadoo are offering upto 8Mb connections in some areas. North London stands a good chance of being in the catchment area, I would have thought.

I've got 10mbps due any day now on my telewest cable account but I pay £35 a month for that.

I'm just looking for a low key affordable adsl solution for someone :)
