Broadband migration?

Anyone know of a broadband service that handle serivce migration automatically for you?

Can a broadband company refuse me right to cancel my serivces/contract if you owe them money?

If so, is satalite bb anygood?

If i owe them money i think you will be able to cancel your service/contract, unless we are married and i die and you inherit my debts.

Depending on where you live, I don't think so... Although they can send a collections agency after you, and/or ruin your credit rating.

And depending on the terms & conditions you agreed with by signing up for your account, they may also charge a hefty early-termination fee on top of whatever you owed them.


Don't know them, never heard of them... But if it's really a satellite service like it sounds, then you are bound to have higher latency and more packetloss overall when compared to a wired service, especially during bad weather.

Wired connections almost always beat wireless as far as reliability is concerned.

I don't know about the other stuff you mentioned, but I would stay clear of the "broadband" called satellite connections, because you'd have a decent downlink from the satellite, but the uplink is still via an old modem like ISDN or 56k.

ADSL is just one step beyond that again, if you upload something, you choke your download bandwidth.

I had 10mbit up/down via fiber cables, but unfortunately I moved from that sweet spot :(

Satellite Broadband has just appeared in my rural community. It seems to be fine for fast internet access, but thats about it. No online gaming becuase of the delay between yer PC to the Satellite, or large file transfers are possible.

I have ADSL, so I dont use it, but it appears that people who do not do any of the above seem to like it. Lets face it anything is better than Dial-Up.

Anyoo the addy for the satellite stuff is at www.morham.org. It might give yoo some idea of what its all about. Personally though I will stick with ADSL.

AshMantle: You don't have to choke your download bandwidth by uploading. Certain ADSL hardware will prioritise ACK's so that uploading at full speed has minimal impact on downloads.

Also, Windows 2003 Server does this automatically if you use it as a NAT gateway between you and the internet.

@vinyl, yeah you're right, but for the normal user, the ISP gives you the ADSL hardware you're supposed to use, and we don't have the server version of windows installed :)

Is it possible my bill with eclipse can prevent me from getting another dsl provider? I do plan to pay the new one so doesn't need to be lax on that, i'm just worried about getting eclipse to remove my adsl connection. they've already cut my access to the account, just not the account it's self.

would i still be able to get bulldog internet installed since they give you a new phoneline that isn't bt based or am I stuff till I get a migration code off eclipse?

If satalitte is the only option, does anyone know of a serivce that offers free or sub 100 pound equipment?
also why is it bad for large downloads?

Of course it will - even AFTER you've paid the bill.

This is because of your "credit rating". If you've ever owed outstanding money and not paid it and they've had to go beyond the classic red bill, then you will not be able to access a number of services until you:

* pay the outstanding amount

* pay Experion a removal charge so your credit rating is restored

This is unavoidable. You will be blacklisted by whichever company decides to use experion or does credit history checks on you. A company you owe outstanding money to is entitled to share that information in order to get their money back. This usually works for them in the end.

This hasn't ever happened to me: I've always chosen to go without rather than get in debt. But I know how it works regardless...

How the @#!* do you rack up £1000 of debt from an isp? Mine costs £600 a year for 10mbps, phone and cable TV all in.

Get a job Antony. You've got to start taking care of business. If you can't even keep your internet going, you're going to have real problems with important things, like food and shelter, when the time comes.

The time came and went ages ago - he's in his 20's... I hope he sorts himself out though.

I lived with parents until 21, dossed on mates floor for 6 months, moved in with his missus daughter (18) for 6 months, back home for 2 weeks, rented a room in Telford for a couple of years (sharing with mates), met and moved in with a missus for 3 years then dumped her and moved into my own flat in Shrewsbury until now.

Holding down a decent enough job (£15K) that I enjoy and paying all my bills on time.

Let's not mention that I'm dodging £13k of credit card debt ;) (my ex's fault).

my disposable income may not be great, but I'm saving to buy a house, then things can really get going.

Getting a job isn't that easy. Every one i've applied for recently I've not heard back. And that's just cv replies. I can't be arsed going back to college, so it's not easy.

Actually getting any old job is easy. Getting a dream job isn't. I suggest Tescos doing shop floor work. It's rewarding, and pays big actually.

Part time too, so there's plenty of coding time for when you clock off.

Getting a job is easy, if you are serious about getting one.

I started off doing @#!*ty temping jobs (you have approached Pertemps at least, haven't you?) and from there you move upwards.

Temping sucks because your agency will try and screw you so they neve have to pay you holiday pay and they will send you to the worst places imaginable.

However, if you make a good impression at some of those places, you will be offered better jobs. Especially if you keep in touch with the agency and make sure they know full well that you want a 'proper' job and you've demonstrated an ability and willingness to work hard.

I've worked in some really dire places (general joey at a food factory, data entry robot for a bank, working on the line at a chocolate factory, doing piecework for hozelock, credit controller at two really dodgy places), but I went in with a 'can do' attitude rather than 'when do I clock off?' attitude. That got me noticed, hence I'm doing alright now.

I have (well, had) a great aptitude for coding and I had all these wonderful dreams of being a professional game coder. I'm now a credit controller, which is about as far from the games industry as the moon is from Earth. Priorities change and life has a way of steering you along its own path.

Yeah I've done warehouse packing. It's ok, you go into robot mode.

Was working in a warehouse from the age of 16 to 20. I was a picker. It was a cash&carry warehouse Job where i had a gun that I would use to read barcodes off of stock. I would look at the display on the gun, it would give me an item number and row location and I had to go and read it with the gun then put the item on a conveyer belt which was moved to the packers who packed the stuff. I spent 9 hours each day running up and down isles picking items of shelves.

Like rob says, you go in to robot mode where you dont even have to think about doing the job you just do it.

Before that I worked in McDonalds in haringey but was fired because one of the managers was a Turk and didn't like me.

If you cancel the service ant, they will send you a bill for what you owe them. If you don't pay they will send the debt to a debt collectors agency who will no doubt hound you for the money.

I wouldn't bother with sattelite connections as from what I've read they're crap. Sign up with Bulldog Broadband if you want, you'll have to get a new phoneline installed though. I doubt they would deny you the service if it's in someone else's name and not yours so it's an option atleast.

...And the baliffs will kick your front door down, take your computer and your nans tv. That might cover it in their eyes but unlikely. They will probably take your consoles as well.

Cos you live with your nan and thats what she owes. Before you think they can't, they can. And the police will help them if they ask them to.

That said, I notice you said the problem was with a credit card? That probably means eclipse has already been paid, and you'll have to deal with the bank.

Whoever it is that you owe money to I suggest you FAST talk to them and arrange a situation where you can pay them back - even as little as £10 a week.

That'll only take two years. Or it's 3 weeks work. Whatever hurts less.

LuCiFeR[SD]: Dude, that's so freaky that you know about Magna! I did 6 months of night shifts at that place before I moved to a job 2 buildings down (how I got started in my great and wonderful career as a credit controller).

Man, Telford sucks though :-/ Shrewsbury is so much nicer. Shame I'm still working in Telford (Donnington), travel costs are a bee-yatch.

vinylpusher: I currently work for an Italian Tool firm on Hortonwood industrial estate, so I live in Telford as it is EASIER and cheaper to get to work. But I agree, Shrewsbury is a lot nicer, I lived there for long enough at St. Johns hill. Used to have a lot of friends around there who I lost touch with, you know how it is, move 20 miles up the road lol.

Man, as soon as you mentioned that Chocolate factory, it just reminded me of my time there MANY years ago, and it had to be one of the worst places I have ever worked. Sure as hell put me off eating Mars bars and stuff.. I bet you know why I am saying that too ;)... BTW, I used to be a maintenance engineer there.

I'm a little further up the food chain these days though, warehouse manager... but hell, it's still a crap job hehehe

If nothing else, the phone number that the DSL signal 'rides' over can be blocked from re-activating DSL elsewhere

Ross C: Not exactly. One of the checks credit card companies make is the address though. If someone with the same last name lives (or lived) there as the person applying for credit, and they left a bad record, it will affect you.

I used to work as a data entry clerk for a credit card company and I had to perform those checks.

About eight years ago I was refused a mortgage with the Halifax because my new partner listed a previous address where her ex-boyfriend had run up some debts.

Got accepted by other building society, but it just goes to show that these things can rear up and bite your ass.

I think you can tell your credit rating by the amount of unsolicited credit card applications that pop through your door, on a weekly basis.

My credit rating is entirely clean and I still get these offers.

That's what I mean. If you had a bad rating they wouldn't be trying to lend you money. :)

I spoke to them on the phone and agreed to pay 'em back 160 a month so all is good now. except for the thought of all my dole money going on it.

One eyed, just over a grand but they said they'll reconnect me on thursday when i make the first payment.

I have just set up an ADSL broadband connection for a friend who uses Tiscali as the provider. Guess what? yes, the CD installation is a load of rubbish and doesn't set it up correctly. Two hours later I finally managed to get it going. I feel sorry for people without I.T. skills who have to go through the same thing.

Phoneing the help line didn't help as it was busy all the time - I wonder why?
