Sigs with PC Specs

Who finds sigs with PC specs a) exciting b) useful c) useless d) annoying

I think I'm a c. What seems even more funny is when people post their specs but they are really low, I just gotta ask why? I *assumed* people post specs because a) they think their PCs are cool and wanna boast, or b) they think someone might find them interesting, or c) they post on the very rare occasions that someone actually finds them useful after testing an app for them or d) they have nothing better to post.

I personally prefer links to websites showing work done by the person, this is far more interesting and useful.

I'm with you in preferring links to websites/portfolios. That said, the thinking is that people will want to know your system specs any time you're posting a technical question, so putting the specs in your sig will save you having to remember.

Most the beta testing team have them in to help with diagnosing faults with problems and bugs they have encountered.

They're almost as bad as those sigs with percentage indications of proj........ erm, never mind :P

Tom: Well my percentage things can beclicked on to show webpages and downloads, so I think they're useful anyway ;-)

What shaggy said. When we were beta testing B3D or even in the early days of blitz2D, we were told to put our system specs in our sig so that Mark would know not only what we were talking about but on what kind of hardware the post was referring. Some people just kinda kept it up.

If we had a small comment box in the user profile area we could dump our PC specs in there.

That way, you can then click the forum users name to read up on PC specs, email contact etc ..

I onlt post my specs since everyone else is doing it. :P
I don't have any homepages or games to link to. yet.

Edit: No more specs in my sig. Got tierd of seeing them anyway. :P

I posted my specs because people started asking me for them when I was testing their games...
As for websites - you can always look up the profile...

Why do some people get so annoyed about posting specs in sigs? It doesn't bother me at all. I've even thought about doing it myself simply to save me from the many times I've had to post specs in the past. I've only held off from doing it because it seems to annoy some people. :/

And, I certainly wouldn't be showing off with MY specs, believe me. :)

Is it any of your business what I write in my sig? I certainly don't care what you think. It's my sig, so I will write anything that is ok according to the rules of the board.

Specs in sigs are useful for lots of reasons:
For Mark: it would help if everyone as well as beta-testers had them.
For Blitz users testing their own apps/games etc.

Having them doesn't do any harm, infact it does a lot of good.

Perhaps I'll get around to making a little page on my website with all my specs etc and just having a link to that page as my sig.

Probably wont be bothered ever to do that though :)

A long time ago before BlitzBasic.com, before BlitzCoder.com and even before Shane R. Monroes infamous BlitzBasement.com, Mark asked everyone to put their system specs in there sig to help him out with testing and bug reports. I guess some of us still remember that.

Specs are seldom used, and therefore aren't a necessity within a sig. The majority of the time, they just clutter up the place. I don't have a problem with them, they just aren't necessary.

I think that's a great idea that allows users to still look up a persons specs without the forums needlessly being cluttered with seldom used information.

A sig is a personal asset that can be used however a person intends. I just think that overly large images and pointless? information should be avoided in the interest of courtesy to other readers.

However, although technically 'useless', I think that sig items such as famous quotes, jokes, silly comments, etc., help to liven up the place though. Gotta love this one: 'Say *NO* to drugs, they brain your damage...'

What's the point in having a website, if you can't link to it?

Mark has requested it at least once on the blitzbasic forums as well when the windows Beta of BlitzMax was first released.

That's pretty much the only reason I list 'em in mine.

I hate all sigs, ban them all, ban everyone!

I'm not suggesting they should be banned or censored at all, that would be dumb. I was just doing a survey about what people thought and to start the survey I said I personally found them useless but I don't need to know them for beta testing purposes.

Uh, K, that's excessive. Nice Video Card and preposterous amount of hard disk space, I have a mere 0.4 by comparison (unless I count drives not currently plugged in ;-) I have same sound card. Now what could you be doing with Two DVD drives hey? hmm... ;-)

Speak for yourself. When the "Slow text in Blitz3D" bug crept up, I'm sure someone at BRL would have appreciated someone mentioning that this was limited to nVidias graphics chips on a specific driver build. Instead they spent a lot of time hunting down a bug that turned out to be nVidias fault, and something they where powerless to do anything about.

In fact on todays PC's the single most common source of software failure is driver related in some way, and particularly so on programs that rely on many different drivers (like games for instance). Why do you think the readme.txts of whichever game you buy tells you to download the latest drivers (or in cases like Enter The Matrix, Rise of Nations and Lego Starwars, a particular version of said drivers) before contacting tech support? Clue: Not because it's useless.

When debugging software it helps to know the hardware configuration that screws it up - that way you have a chance of building a comparative system yourself to check it on, thus giving you a larger chance of being able to reproduce it.

Sigs in general aren't nessecary. It's just another bad habbit we picked up from UseNet/FidoNet.

I didn't say "Don't link to it". I said not everyone needs to. Anyway, there is a reserved spot for linking to your website inside your user profile, as opposed to say, a spot for your system configuration.

In any thread where people post snippets or exe's and someone points out a bug, they don't have to post specs...
This used to happen all the time and i some forums-parts still do, why change sig just because you happen to post in "General" forum ?

Specs have no use in general discussion.
Specs have a use in showcase and programming forums.

Whether you find them useful or not depends on whether you come here to talk the talk, or do the walk.

I dont put my specs in my sig but I do find them useful when getting feedback and often end up mentioning my key specs. I dont care about the details usually, but cpu/ram/gfx card are handy. Screensize, empty hard disk space, cd burners, network cards etc serve limited purpose.

It's hard to tell, since I obviously don't have any way of telling when someone uses my spec info for tracking down a bug. I can tell you that it's not 2 weeks since someone (who had sigs disabled) asked me for my specs.
