Fantasy RPG people/monsters needed

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Fantasy RPG people/monsters needed

We have seen 2 separate Fantasy/RPG building packs being released - both of which were good.

We need peasants/villagers/shopkeepers/towns people/guards/inn keepers, etc, etc. Not forgetting the monsters too.

Right, who's got them? I am suspicious that "L_Draven" is working on NPC/monster packs. Who else is?

Let's have them.

I'd even settle for the same model that come with different textures to change the clothes/appearance of the character - a bit like having your own 'Action Man'/'Barbie doll' that you can dress up.

I bet yertari can't wait to model a monster after uncle Noel ^_^

If he did he'd probably have him with his head in his lap and call it a goblin.

Get it? Head in lap - goblin? Large.

I'll start on a monster pack in december.. until then :)

I'm not sure Pinnochio makes a scarey Gonlin :)

Humanoid modelling is a lot harder than buildings, which is why there's more fantasy building packs than fantasy character packs. Making weapons is even easier, which is why there's at least 3 fantasy weapon packs around.

I think the solution to this will eventually come with the various humanoid character modelling tools in the works at the moment, I know of two and have heard abot a third specifically aimed at indie's like us where you can define the parameters of the character and that directly modifies the mesh. One of them is even planning to rig the models for animation and include default animation sets, although one isn't :/ (I tried telling him...!).

However I dont think any of these packages are going to arrive this year, so we're in the hands of those with the talent - and to be brutally honest the level of work that goes into a character pack of sufficient standard to sell to descerning indies just isn't worth what an indie is willing to pay for it.

Sadly :(

although one can make monster packs for self education and *give* to the community.

I mean, such placeholders are so much better than just static cubes when developing that new cool dungeoncrawler ^^

"Tom Speed" (I think it is him) has some - I know - I have 4 models made by him - a wizard, an elf archer, a skeleton and a goblin/troll thing. All of them animated

"Psionic" made a fantastic dwarf model too. Animated too.

I've got a mushroom pack.

I've seen the Dwarf you mention Puki it's a really nice model and there's a few other good models on his site too, but i've not seen the others you mention - do you have a link please?

"Rose-bud" - I have the goods:

I had to do some cool hacking to locate them.

Large.

Cheers Puki, he's clearly a talented guy.

Those are really good puki - and they are for free?

I have often thought of making character packs, but tbh its not really that worth it from the artists point of view.

It can take about 5 hours or so to make a very nice weapon or prahaps a day or so to make a nice building (thats with full textureing etc).

Now for a character it could take up to 2 weeks to make a faily simple humanoid. Firstly the actualy quality of the mesh has to be alot higher for an organic/animated model, then you have alot more to texture, then it has to be rigged and animated.

Plus you have certain design problems, should you make it more generic or stylised. Obviously if a gamer sees the same sword in 3 games then it doesn't really register, but having the same character in 3 games would trigger something.

Plus then theres the sale price. Todo a pack of say 5 decent characters would probably not be worth making unless it could be sold for $50-$150 (depending on how many people bought it) and thats around the same price as blitz, so it wouldn't look to appealing for the small indie market IMO.

Mmm, I think "L_Draven" has premade ones that he may sell in packs soon - plus, he may be making more.

His site and the gallery section show characters.

The reason why I think he has premade characters is due to this project which is were the building pack comes from:

@ "Matty" - not sure if "Tom Speed" released those models for people to use freely in their commercial games or not. I would assume they are okay to use as he didn't include any disclaimers or anything to identify their creator.

The ork model is awesome. Great animations.
