I always thought that these would be "CyberPunk" stuff I wouldn't see in my lifetime... I guess that soon we can buy flat TV displays by the square footage, and just roll it up and take home...

Not to unexpected to have seen this so soon. Our technology jumps fast.

We already have 3D holograms in full color, which absolutly RULE. I bet in 20 years we will be so far ahead from now that we havnt even thought of the technology yet.

Brilliant! I had envisioned one of these some years back and thought it would be ace to hang anywhere (or use as a carpet (cloud screensaver)!), make it wireless too (with in-built power cell and seignal receiver) and it would totally rock. Better than projector as you can't stand in the way of the picture and hopefully it works in the daytiome too.

Things that would be nice:-

1) OLED displays that actually last more than a few years (in constant use) would be a good start!

2) Displays capable of 4K x 4K resolutions.

3) 100,000:1 contrast ratio displays (displaying 64-bit colour).

Imagine being able to fold your PC monitor and take it in the bedroom. That would be the schizz.

100,000:1 contrast is due out next year on canon's new tft technology, it also does pure black and 1ms refresh.

vinylpusher: haha would be nice, but when? Within our lifetime no doubt but I want it NOW for about 10p (that's around 20cents).

Aten: Yeah, it will be cool when you can carry your PC/screen around easily and talk to it and have touch screen and the screen could have a built in "Chording" keyboard where you only need a few buttons to type by using natural hand movements (i.e. no RSI). Also of course, it's only useful carrying around the screen if you are away from home, in your house you just need a holographic screen that can appear in anyroom anwhere, so if you're on the loo/in the bath and have a great idea, you can call up your PC screen and dictate a note, or browse the internet (verbally or with tracked eye movements) etc.

I really look forward to all this stuff, we'll look back the days of stuck in front of massive bulky monitors and PCs which crap keyboards and bad chairs as like the equivalent of victorians sending kids up chimneys to clean them.

Whats 100,000:1 contrast going to do, make white like looking at the sun while black looks black? Sounds pointless. If my display was any brighter id have to wear sunglasses :P

Cygnus: It would give a very good colour gamut to work with, making it possible to more accurately represent images.

64-bit colour? What is the point? Our brains will not be able to tell the different between 32-bit and 64-bit so I think its a waste of time.

I would not be too surprised if in 20 years we have wallpaper that can act as a screen and change on demand.

If you mean 32bit color as in what windows now uses, we most certainly can tell the difference. Each color channel in 32 bit color is only 8 bits, with only 256 different shades, and this results in banding with some gradients. You might have a hard time seing the difference with the two colors right next to eachother but when you look at the whole gradient you can see the areas that are a little too red or green.

Also, if we get displays that are brighter than what we have now, like an HDTV for example, then there is a greater difference in brightness between black and white, and this spreads out the colors more, so you need more precision to have the same smoothness in color change.

Sunglasses? Not likely. :-) Higher contrast means more realistic images. If they could get them bright enough that you needed sunglasses when looking at the sun, that would be awesome in terms of making stuff look more real.


Speaking of image quality, I just though of another advance we'll see. Better theatres. Right now theatre screen quality sucks. I hope it won't be too long before it's all digital and the images are much brighter and more vivid, because right now I'm getting better picture quality on my TV set. Almost not worth it to go out to the movies anymore.

E-Ink is working on electronic paper which sounds interesting.
