Windows Bloody Update!

Has anyone here ever had problems using Windows update before? OK let me rephase that as its probably everyone. I have just had to reinstall windows for the second time in two days after trying the latest NVidia drivers (you`d think I`d have learnt by now ;) and now I cannot get any Windows updates at all. Normally when you go there for the first time it ask to install something activex related but now I am not getting this I just get the express or custom buttons from the off and upon clicking either I get the following,




None of which help me in the slightest. Can anyone offer some advice?

I have been having the same problem with my XP home and the only sol;uton I found was to turn off my firewall.

Have not had time to look into it further though.

Use explorer to go to windows -> Downloaded Program Files and see what is listed there, if there is anything suspicious or just something you know you didn't install, right click on it and remove it. you shouldn't be able to break anything by removing stuff from there so it is ok to do this.

I have just tried both of the above but still no luck. Hmmm... how annoying.

Yes there is a Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool.

that appears to be related to windows updates (required for validating windows), if you remove it and go back, does it work (might want to create a restore point before doing so just in case).

No luck after removing it :( Maybe its a problem at their end. I will try again tommorrow. Thanks anyway.

I noticed the last couple or three days that updates make a stab at working at boot time, and then just tails off, like it was a false start or soemthing.

It's like there's a lack of stuff coming from the MS end of the deal.

I feel they maybe got an issue or two at the mothership at present. Sure has that "not working quite as expected" feel to it.

This is for 2 XPProSP2 systems for sure and quite possibly for another 4 besides those.

@Garion - 'svchost.exe' needs to be allowed through for MSUpdate.

Does your nice, silver windows XP CD contain a hologram? ;)


I used a copy to install once since at the time my stupid parents had thrown out my legal disk- (this was actually the *Second* time)

I couldn't update it at all, and had to purchase another disk.

I use a copy backup of XP to install without any problems, my original disk was baked in the sun, then put into a 62x CD-Rom drive. Didnt stand a chance, poor CD :(

Micro$oft released quite a few patches over the last few days. Its just probably queueing to relieve the demand by everyone. Try again in a few days time and see if that helps.

Cygnus: I didnt see it, but I heard it, It spun up real fast then screeched, and then stopped saying please insert "Windows XP Home Edition" cd-rom into the drive. I was like what-the-hell and opened the CD drive and the cd was in like 8 different pieces. Probably more still in the Drive somehwere too :S
