Haunted Computer Fans

I was sitting here browsing BlitzBasic and suddenly... out of the Blue, all of my Computers fans started spinning faster for no reason. I checked the Temps, (CPU at 32 degrees, 6600GT at 38 degrees) then, as if they had a mind of their own, they all slowed back down to normal speed / pitch. My computers haunted!

It may have automatic speedup when the temperature goes too high. I lost one fan couple days ago when the bolt (or whatever) was loosened up little by little by vibration and finally it inclined and hit the copper base and broke.

Yeah I was thinking something like that but these fans are directly linked to the 12v line, not the connectors on the motherboard with the rpm wire. My fans are noisy... but the one on my 6600GT drives me bloody mad. It sounds like a mini jet engine.

I have purchased a CPU fan, VGA cooler, and a Hard Drive silencer.

Result? .. Bliss. Recommended stuff.

For your 6600 GT (AGP) the VF700 cooler should do the trick but read the compatibility details first.

Does anyone got that classic noise you get for about 60 seconds when you turn on your PC when the room is cold first thing in the morning?
The fan doesn't spin round properly because it is cold and it sounds like a ghoul moaning inside my PC. :)

I get the opposite to that ENAY: after my PC has been on for a couple of hours, I get a slight, intermittent, high-pitched vibration. Something has expanded with the heat and vibrates against something else. I can't track it down and it drives me nuts!!!!! :/

Just give your case a big whack, that should sort it out.

Yeah I get that big10p. I recently took apart my computer and got rid of all the nasty dust in the fans and heatsyncs. It made a huge difference. But that damn 6600GT fan just ruins it. I wish I could turn it off without killing my card.

ENAY: I used to get something like that back in the colder months. Its not so bad now but I can still notice it. I think its the grease stuff in the fans that sort of hardens when its cold.

When working as a technician, "percussive maintenance" fixed about 50% of noise (and about 80% of monitor) problems. ;)

I once had a 5800XT which had a fan which didn't work at all. Strange thing is, the card worked fine. It even overclocked and ran nicely.

It did get exceptionally hot though, so it must have been heading for an early grave. Got it swapped when I discovered the fault ;)

Now I've got a newer PC, it makes hardly any noise. I can barely hear that it's on sometimes. I'm stil considering getting a Zalman CPU cooler, to get things even quieter.

When I went to my first LAN party earlier this year, the other gamers referred to my computer as "The Vaccuum Cleaner" - and it doesn't even have a fan on the graphics card!

Then I got me one of these Scythe Samurai fans (from this site, in fact):

and now I occasionally reset the computer because the monitor's turned off and I can't hear that it's turned on.

I've got 2 case fans, a cpu fan, one on the vid card and three in the PSU, but the only fan that's audible is the little screamer on the mobo's chip set!
Damned annoying it is too. 8o/

The annoying thing about the noise I get is that when I take off the side casing to locate the noise, everything cools down a bit almost instantly and the noise goes away! :/

Currently got the case open but now I have all the fan noise and dust inside the case to deal with. Boo!

I got totally sick of the noise and just put my PC under the desk. I can barely hear it now, and it only runs a few degrees warmer. No probs ;)

take out the damn ghost entirely... and get a good heatsink...


no... no... i was just kidding... don't do that :)

Hehe yeah I should one day. Right now I'm pretty much using stock cooling. But it does its job ;)
