What defines an "engine" in a 3D sense, what are they good for, and is it worth licensing in case which one? I've never used one before (could it be my folly?)

There are plenty of 3D engines availiable, you can try lookin on Devmaster.net. Authough their engine ratings are a little biased it gives a fairly good overview of whats hot and not.
