Vib Ribbon

Has anyone played it? I've only seen screenshots and movies for it. It looks awesome. I'm interested in creating a game similar to it.

Oh dear, you are gonna regret saying that :p

I have it. It was a neat idea, and fun for a little while, but in the end it held no long-term appeal for me. However, until Blitz gets some access into sound info, I think you'll struggle...

It's appeal was the (default) music and its visual style, but as Mark said, its life was short lived..

I'm intrigured, what's it about? Is it like Rez?

It's not "about" much. You are a character that travels along a line. You have no control over your speed / direction / etc. As you travel along the line, various shapes start to appear in the line. As your character hits each shape, you have to press a button on the joypad to negotiate it. There are four buttons corresponding to four shapes. Things get interesting when the shapes start to combine and you have to remember which button combo to press. The shapes that appear, and the frequency of them relates directly to the music that is playing, so you're button pressing ends up quite rhythmic with the music.

The graphics were extremely minimalist, line and character are stick drawings in white on a balck screen.

And of course the really clever thing is that you can put in ANY CD, select a track (or the whole lot) and it will play the game and tie the shapes to the music. Try Madonna Ray of Light for a pretty evil experience, most classical music is generally easier. Hmm, I wonder what it would make of Green Day...project for tonight! (Although you mentioning Rez means I'm gonna have to try once more to complete the final level 100% first!)

I'd say it was more like Frequency / Amplitude than Rez, but if you like your "music based games" (and I do, I even have a copy of Beatmania still, complete with turntable controller), it's worth locating a copy.

There's a semi-sequel around, although I doubt it'll ever get released here. It's based on a similar concept but you write japanese calligraphy (hence no chance of a western release!). Supposed to be very beautiful to play/watch, it's been featured in Edge a few times.

The new Vib game was universally slated I thought.

Mark Tiffany, I've a big fan of Konami's Bemani games, have bought most of them already :)

What system is this Vib Ribbon out on?

Yuk! sounds just like those hideous missions in GTA San Andreas where you have to hit direction combos in time to the music.

No, my idea of rythm is the sound of the AK47 in Counter-strike source, but good luck on your remake.
